Great start for us. Really glad to see Stannard bringing in his Northern Europe form to this Southern Europe Tour. MAL checking in even better, congrats KO, it should a sweet race for you if he keeps his composure. Thanks for the kind words Fab. Thanks also Lauren for the preview and jt for the report!

Cool stage If the intention was to add another stage for the best hybrids, then this surely was a success! Great to see the Top 2 battle it out after Areruya missing the move on day 1 Gesbert the biggest surprise up front, didn't expect him to keep up and even get a stage podium, but he must have had great legs.
Obviously an early bummer for the pure puncheurs, but this race never really was designed for them anyway.
Of the strong hybrids, Buchmann seemed to be on an awful day, definitely one I expected to be up front. Not looking great for UBS
Congrats to jandal, looks like Areruya has used the long break pretty well.
Thanks for the report.

Hirschi looked active but he wasn't feeling strong enough to make either of his attempts stick.
Still, it's a good sign that he's trying something.

Good to see some time gaps. Hopefully Formolo can improve his position a but in the upcoming stages. Champoussin, Tolhoek and Kron potentially looking to pick up some points as well.

A bit of a pity there weren`t more time gaps even but good to see them at all.
I used to fail in this race too often with a puncheur leader, Phinney so far proves to be the better choice clearly. So far so good. Just needs to hang on and ideally get some gaps to not lose his best of the rest s.t. position. |

Sagan losing time sucks, but we're still keeping 4 guys in top 30 and that is good enough for now

Yates looks solid so far but will need a good finsih somewhere to get a really valuable result.
My memory is the ew stage was primarily added because the break kept winning the old stage 2. It seems to fit the style of the race nicely.

Morton hanging on nicely enough. We still need a few more selective stages to get the most out this race but it's nice to see Romo has the white jersey as well, although I would have liked him to have done better - as it feels he's been underwhelming this year...
No surprises as to who is out front, will be a nice battle as to who will win for sure!

I wouldn't be mad at hearing we split the first two stages, but the gap in position on Stage 1 hurts and really hope we get the opposite result soon, either by Lopez falling behind in a sprint or Areruya gapping him. Think we're feeling the effect of no Pidcock so far, as Areruya should be winning the easier sprints (at least in regards to MAL) and did last year largely thanks to Pidcock as the superdomestique. Poor positioning also the biggest factor of course and shouldn't be repeated.
Excited for the rest of the race, still feel I'm considering MAL the favourite based on his training but Areruya has been right there with him all year still so should be a classic match-up. Thanks for the reports so far jt!

Too bad Formolo couldn't get any bonus seconds, but at least our top guys gained places in the GC.

Not a particularly good stage for us but could be a lot worse too. Lopez still looks pretty strong. I'll take it.

There goes our last hope for GC points here. Maybe tomorrow could see Hayakawa fight for a good place.
Anyaway congrats to Assa Abloy.
Great report, especially the banter bit about Puma's enigmatic chasing duties.

Stage 3 close to perfection. 3rd was giving Phinney important bonus seconds for the GC. Only thing, I guess if he hadn`t attacked, he could even have fought for the win or time gaps as he still powered till the end despite his previous effort.
Stage 4 not ideal. He again was one of the most active, which is good and not often with him this season. Though, the attack was rather pointless and in the end lead to a time gap to the top 5 and dropping behind couple riders again due to this. Here he really should have saved the energy as the terrain was clearly not the most suited for him in this race.
Thanks for the reports! And congrats to all winners so far. |

What the fuck Puma? There's one team I didn't think would bend the knee to Evonik and do their job for them...

Mixed feelings about the stage. Obviously a great result from Champoussin, but Formolo dropped down to 8th in the GC which is below my expectations from him here. Hopefully he can still save a top 5 spot in the final stage.
