Tour of America

All reports are written by kandesbunzler26.

The preview was set to be posted on the 22nd, but why not give you a few extra hours to get your hopes and excitement up for the People's Grand Tour? The first stage is expected to be online on the 23rd.

It's time! The People's Grand Tour, or the fourth Grand Tour is here, pick your favourite! All is set for the Pro Continental and Continental teams that have found their way to the opening ceremony at the top of the Burj Khalifa. The next three weeks they will battle it out across UAE, Oman, India, Nepal, back again to Nepal and India, before moving east to Thailand and Malaysia, From there, it's the Philippines next, before the final week see the riders and teams face challenges in Hong Kong, Japan and USA. Ulrich made a brilliant route presentation. You don't want to miss it, or at least you want to refresh your memory of the route. This is brilliant! https://pcmdaily....d_id=66952

Profile wise, we're looking at this for the People's Grand Tour:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Profiles/mg_gtamerica_1.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Profiles/mg_gtamerica_2.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Profiles/mg_gtamerica_3.jpg

It's a very varied route that could see a close GC fight across the different countries and challenging mountain stages, not so difficult mountain stages, hilly stages and a short team time trial. It all leads us to the final week, which looks set for late dramatic changes, starting with a steeeeeeep hill finish in Hong Kong on day 15, facing a mountain time trial on Mount Fuji on stage 15, immediately followed by a monster 244 kilometers stage ending on the Mikuni Pass. To finish it all, we have an undulating time trial on stage 20 and arguably the Queen stage to end it all. Well done to all riders making it to Paradise, or Mount Rainier to end stage 21 and the People's Grand Tour.

Who are the contenders and participants, then?

Surely the team based in New Zealand must be offended seeing the People's Grand Tour not visit their iceland? Well, they're at least bringing their A game to show the organizers got the route all wrong! Though, to be direct, their A game is Fabbro, who should see solid support from Visser. Other than that, Scully looks set to get involved in the sprints. They probably hope for Fabbro not being considered a top GC rider, to give their other riders, Visser included freedom to chase for breakaway glory.

Speaking of visiting their country in the People's Grand Tour, Babymetal must be over the moon. The Japanese team will see home advantage for the crucial GC stages on Mount Fuji and Mikuni Pass. They'll need it as well, as they're bringing two very different climbers to lead the line. Petelin looks to be the explosive one, while Verschaeve is more of a diesel climber and got the look of a GC rider. At least they will never fear crosswinds or gaps on the flat stages, as long as Arashiro keeps them close to the front. Speaking of whom, Arashiro could be a guy to annoy sprinters if he's allowed to do his thing similar to how he likes it in one day races.

Looking at double leaderships, Cervelo is another team playing that game, bringing Hamilton and Preidler to the table. Both might look at breakaways to find their best option for success. The former due to his main stat, the latter due to his poor backup stats. There's also old legend Houle to try his luck in the sprints. And you actually thought they wouldn't bring their puncheur armada to the People's Grand Tour? Of course you're wrong, as they will have a full hand to play in all hilly stages they can find, or even create!

Speaking of team depth, ELCO might be the answer for this edition of the ToA. They're looking beastly for the GC. Giannoutsos as their clear #1, and he should be a rider to challenge for the overall win, especially seeing his crew, with Mavrikakis, Christakos, Soulious and Vila all being capable riders on their own when the road rises. They look very well set up for a Giannoutsos push for the title.

Rochas and Lafay both have the stats to be perfect breakaway riders for the three weeks across all those countries. Especially Lafay with his backup stats being a match made in heaven for breakaways. There's also Darbinyan for the sprints, but who knows, will a 76/74 sprinter contest them? Surely Euskotren hope so!

The Norwegians at Gjensidige have looked to be a safe and sure promotion team, if not even the CT ranking winning team, with Newton being their obvious challenger. But hang on. The People's Grand Tour knows how to kill both a title challenge, a promotion push or a fight to avoid relegation. Gjensidige should whatever outcome here still sit firm in the promotion spots. But title push, you say? Good for them also Newton have found their way to the Tour of America, as them battling it out for points could be absolutely crucial to decide the CT ranking winner. Gjensidige put their trust in Lunke. Solid, but will it be enough? To be honest, I doubt that, and we shall see why when we get to their title rivals.

Glanbia clearly made a choice to not send their TTT squad here to grab that stage win. Wise choice, you'd definitely say seeing it would have costed 20 more race days... They must hope Mannion can challenge from breakaways in the mountains, and then there is honestly not much more. Ryan is a rider with a bright looking future. I'm sure the fans would love to see him try his luck and show off their jersey. There can't at least be no doubt if we get to join their team meetings. This must be all about breakaways. Tom David, the grand old cobbler could even fancy his chances on the early flat stages. Who knows, whatever it takes to show off their jersey!

Hilcona bring an interesting team for the three weeks. They definitely focus on the flat stages bringing Krieger here. With Van Uden present as his expected leadout, that could work very well. It could obviously also be a total bust. We all know how this AI works. If the AI decides Krieger is worthy a consistent leadout, you must wonder about their pilot, who shall deliver Van Uden and Krieger in a solid position? We could see them put their faith in still developing Aebi. That will definitely be interesting to follow in the first week.

Now we are getting serious regarding the GC battle. Giannoutsos was mentioned earlier as an obvious candidate, even for the win, but wow, look at this from Lotto-Caloi! They're bringing both Quintana and Ho Min to lead the line. Think the latter must be favoured to lead them if it comes down to a pure test of strength with his considerably better backup stats, but what would be even better for them, is if they can use their numerical advantage to exhaust their opponents. Add Bouchard as a super domestique for the climbs, and you definitely expect Lotto-Caloi to show themselves in the mountains. Add the fact that they bring super sprinter Wouters, at least for this season, and this could be THE race for Lotto-Caloi this season. Surely they must be super excited for what is to come.

McCormick is another team with great ambitions in the People's Grand Tour. They're bringing Haller for the sprints, but that's not why they're really here. That mountain depth is beautiful! And with former super talent Sosa to lead the line, who definitely should be able to take advantage of the hillier terrain too, he surely must be a candidate for the podium and maybe even the GC win. Sosa really should have all tools required to perform at his best all three weeks, which should be very, very handy for that brutal final week.

And this is why Gjensidige must be nervous for their CT title ambitions. Newton's team look quite a lot better on paper. They come purely for the GC, where this writer expected/hoped to see both JP Lopez and Elosegui, but clearly the former has been given other options by the team. Elosegui is a rider made for the long, grinding, tough races, and there's no better for him on this level than the Tour of America. With his amazing backup stats, he surely is a podium contender, but I must admit I struggle to see him challenge for more in this fierce lineup, due to his limited flat stat, but also his rather low hill stat. Surely his opponents must look to exploit that.

Sauber is another very, very deep team for the mountains. There's loads of breakaway options here with Chen, Campero and Voisard, but they also got their GC leader Misbah present. Must admit I struggle to value his skills compared to other GC riders. At best a top 5 contender, but likely a top 10-12? I'm sure Sauber happily takes the latter if it also allows their mountain armada to be active and aggressive on the difficult stages.

Mudgway for the sprints! That surely is Spark Team's biggest hope for stage glory. He'll be an interesting one to follow in the flat stages here. His relatively low sprint stat could be compensated by his great acceleration, but then there's also his rather poor resistance, which there can be no secred this writer greatly values. Who knows, Mudgway might have all the answers and put my scepticism to bed! Except for Mudgway, they have also brought Lemus Davila for mountain aggression. At least I expect him to rather prioritize breakaway opportunities late in the race instead of going all out for a GC race.

Borisavljevic looks like a solid option for the GC battle with his good, but not brilliant backup stats. That should make Zain-Omantel hopeful he can outperform his 77 mountain stat. He will seek support from the La Lavandier's. They also bring Altanzul for the sprints, and they're crossing fingers he figures out the sprint on his own, as there's not much support for him. And who knows, Altanzul is one of many riders in this lineup who could surf wheels and find the perfect stage for a surprise sprint win.

Due to technical difficulties, it has been a bit tricky to get overviews from this race for the different main stats. Below follows what at least I think are all 77+ climbers and sprinters and also the 75+ time trialists. Why all the previous talk when you best can figure out how this will go all by yourself? Take a look at the stats and voice your opinions, hopes or excitement.

Thanks ember for the extensive preview, great work Grin

I didn’t expect Min and Quintana so high up on the list. I hope AI treats them well. One in the top 5 and two in the top 10 could be a nice goal. Also Wouters in the mix for the sprints, should be 21 days of fun Smile

All the best guys!

That was exactly what I thought, too! Although the rest of you shouldn't be disappointed when Ulrich isn't reporting as I did that Wink So no more commenting on the actual race on my behalf, but I was mourning just a bit what would have been possible here with Ranaweera and / or Hodeg when I saw the startlist the first time. But there surely will be others with the same feeling.

Oh, sorry, kb! That was only my mistake, misunderstanding a message from Abhi. Should be edited now.

Pretty surprised to see Giannoutsos with an actual shot of winning the race - atleast on paper. I wouldn't be too confident however, given how the Grand Tours have played out these last couple of seasons, but we do come with a lot in order to give it a realistic shot for some succes.

Pretty happy to see where Edmondson is situated in the sprinters hierarchy. We shouldn't really pick up the depeche as the leading train, and those who are leading doesn't really have much of a train present - so it could all become nice and chaotic which I think is the best chance for some sprinting succes we could get. In case we do need to get some things done Varotsos is among the "better" flat riders in the pack so he should be able to see him safe, while Soulious is among the faster puncheurs if some of those bumpy stages should come to a sprint.

On paper I would think Sosa should win here, with Min and Giannoutsos being his fiercest rivals. But we know that GT's are tricky so everyone from that list could end up winning it all!

Really happy also to see Karatsivis riding here. I'm not sure he's the top U25 favorite, but as Lemus Davila probably isn't going to need a full setup around him, Karatsivis could have a couple of chances to ride for himself here, and maybe pick up a U25 podium behind Quinn and teammate (who is placed wrongly in the preview btw) Rodriguez. I suppose those are the top 3 guys just from the top of my head.

Thanks for the preview! Can't wait to get going, and hopefully not be too dissapointed Grin

Thank you for pointing out the Rodriguez mistake. Should be fixed now. Did all lists manually, so I'm hoping there's not too many more mistakes Pfft

surprised to see such a small turnout. Very good opportunity for the small number of teams involved. This should be the first time Im skipping the ToA, so Im kind of jealous to miss out, but I guess I have to remind myself I wouldnt have anyone to have an impact on the race.

Giannoutsos the favourite, but would like to see McCormick do well here. Some big bumps could come out of this race in both divisions I guess.

Good luck everyone. Great preview, ember, thanks!

The Tour of America is more important now then it was at the start of August. We need to try score as much as we possibly can here. Davila is our GC guy and hopefully he can achieve that, or as ember said, some breakaway wins would be amazing too from Davila! We have Mudgway here too and he has been racing well in the sprints so I hope to see some podiums and top 10s, maybe even a win! Marryatt seeing him that high in the TT order is exciting too! He may have a shot at a decent finish in the time trials. Finally, Rodriguez and Karatsivis should be able to have a decent finish in the U25. Hopefully SotD is right and they both finish on the podium or even lead or win the U25 ranking.

Great and amazing preview! Really excited for this race! Hopefully its a good one for us!

Wow, if I had kept McNulty I would be feeling pretty good right now. Although I doubt I would have sent him to this parcours even I had kept him.

Sosa really should have a chance to win but he has to make the punchy finishes count, to offset the IT losses. TTT should be interesting, I assumed we would be mid-table but looks like we have some stronger riders, although we can't afford to drop Sosa.

I would say Giannoutsos is the GC favorite as the best of the traditional GC guys while his extra MT and TT should be enough to see off Sosa. Glad to have his strong team here as I worry about the breakaways.

Little worried about how high Haller is up on the sprint list, don't have a team to support him and don't really want our guys exhausting themselves on sprint stages. I think he needs one win for the record so hope he gets that.

Surprised not to see someone with 81 MO on the startlist after how packed the field felt last year, but excited to see where this goes. Sprinter list also feels much weaker than last year if I recall correctly but makes sense with the parcours I'd say.

Ilosegui and Misbah are the two I'm really looking at, but we'll see how they're able to perform.

Not that strong of a startlist. Hopefully the AI is a lot better than it was at the PT Grand Tours.

A weak ass startlist as compared to the two seasons I was here! Olivier would've been top favourite here but we made our choice of not coming here a long time ago.

I think the GC list basically confirms the PCT division title to ELCO now. They're going to walk the GC, the Teams, and maybe the other classifications as well.

Thanks for the great preview!

Last Tour of America of three weeks, so hopefully we get a nice battle. Would love to see Sosa do well for Ulrich in the relegation battle, as well as the Lotto battle in support of my fellow Limburgian. Of course seeing a team with as good as only self trained talents aim for the win is also very nice to see as a talent-lover. Might indeed be the thing that clinches the title for ELCO, would be a great memory for them. In addition to a great podium fight between these three active managers and outsiders from other active teams such as Elosegui and Misbah there are are some fun teams with talents and/or breakaway riders aiming for the win, so hope they can find some luck/the right timing as well!

Thank you for a great preview, ember.

Ember's great report is bang on about Glanbia, here for Stage Hunting. this race is too much a part of our identity to not come

we went with a pretty strong team here but based on there previous races Hamilton and Prediler won't do much. Did pick this out as something that would suit Houle early on though and i'm hopeful he can have a few big stages

Huge race for McCormick, seems like Sosa kind of has to make his whole season here. But hard to look past ELCO for the win here. Interested to see how the AI handles Mavrikakis for them.

Impressed with how many people see this race as a PCT division winning race for us. How many points do you expect us to score? We aren’t even in top 5 right now, and the teams above us win races on a regular basis.

We would need to score 7-800 points here to use it as a title contender race, which we clearly won’t. Anything above 250 points would be a great result IMO.
