There it is, last ace in the Ardennes, and also the 4th monument of the year. A big set of stars joined the usual set of puncheurs, like the Giro winner Herklotz, Kudus, or Dombrowski.
Herklotz obviously is the big big favorite.
There is still the same wind and rain as in the previous races. The favorites didn’t allow more than 6 riders out: Salzmann, Zingle, Healy, Firdaus, Stojnic and Cort Nielsen. They don’t have a big gap yet, so that could still change.
Bellan, Stork, Martin, Gloag, Craddock, Van den Broek and Bongiorno are leading the peloton.
Half race done and the riders are coming back to Liège. Not much happened, except some punctures. The gap is 3 minutes.
Zingle is dropped from the break 70 kjm from the line. The still complete peloton is 2’30 behind the leaders.
Only Firdaus, Salzmann and Cort Nielsen are still in the breakaway. Herklotz now is 2nd wheel in the peloton.
The break is caught. Barthe, Kamp and Storer immediately attack.
They get a small gap, and Puma rides hard to make the catch. That creates a split with a number of riders caught off-guard: Higuita, Gesbert, Vakoc, Skujins, Mohoric, Kudus, Schmid and Areruya. All Evonik helpers are also here, so they ride.
Zimmermann and Van Wilder don’t want them to join.
Olesen makes the joint between the two groups, but at the same time there’s another attack by Hoelgaard, Gaudu and Finkler.
Lopez manages to catch their wheel!
They get a nice gap with 31 km left. The other attacks have been brought back.
Behind, the chase group is 38 riders strong. Schmid, Amezawa and Ardila aren’t here, so MOL works.
They eventually come back, and the Lopez group is also caught. 24 km to go.
That’s a big attack! Aleotti leads Pidcock, Lopez and Yates. Higuita tries to take their wheel. Herklotz accelerates, so they don’t get a gap.
But this one might stick! Yates, Herklotz, Lopez and Lutsenko are now on the move and that resembles a nice finishing quatuor.
Pidcock leads the chase in a 23 riders group.
It’s even Areruya who makes the catch. 10 km left.
Lutsenko, Higuita and an insatiable Lopez accelerate in the penultimate climb. Herklotz and Schmid are leading the bunch.
They don’t get far. Areruya and Yates counter.
A group of 10 pulls out: Yates, Herklotz, Higuita, Valter, Formolo, Lopez, Gidich, Areruya, Lutsenko and Gesbert. Aranburu tries to join. The others are 30 seconds back.
Herklotz accelerates in the last 2 km.
He has a small lead under the flamme rouge. Valter is 2nd, Gidich is coming fast.
That’s the order with 600 m left. Lopez clearly pays for his attacking mood.
400 m and Valter is now the fastest.
100 m. It’ll play between these two.
When Herklotz rides, Herklotz wins. The world champion takes the time to celebrate.
Valter is 2nd.
Gidich had a good sprint and finishes 3rd. He was a bit too far to challenge for more.
Formolo adds a nice 4th to his campaign, ahead of Yates, Areruya, Higuita and Lutsenko.
Gesbert is 9th, Vansevenant 10th and Lopez comes in a very disappointing 11th.
