★★☆☆☆
Assa Abloy is counting on Alberto Dainese to compete in the flat stages, he showed good form recently with a 3rd spot in Rund um Koln. Just like the Giro, no real GC threat for this team.

Just like Assa Abloy, Aker-MOT has a ambitious sprinter with Dylan Groenewegen (3 stage wins in Paris-Nice, 6th in MSR and 5th in Köln). They also have Novak for GC, although we predict a result like Paris-Nice where he finished 14th.

Frederik Strand Galta will be inspired by his colleague Hugh Carthy, who finished 2th in the Giro. Galta looks to be in contention for a top 5, and maybe more? Sprinter Asbjorn Kragh Andersen already won a stage in Qatar this year.

MG - Lotto - Caloi
[MG] New Manager of the Year - PCM.daily Awards 2022
Looking at the startlist a top-10 in GC must really be doable for Aular, and if he really feels amazing perhaps a fifth. Realistically, seventh should be doable. He'll need to lost as little time as possible on the flat time trial and hills and make up for it in the mountains. If he performs like he did last year this is possible, but as seen in the Giro a bad start to the race can mean you're just trailing a good form for the rest of it. Hopefully Colombian domestiques Osorio and Merchan can aid him, with Osorio perhaps finishing somewhere in that top-25.
Halvorsen here for the sprints agains quite some other strong sprinters. Hoping he can grab us our first Vuelta stage win, and in theory he has enough chances to make it work somewhere. Hopefully he's not the fourth sprinter though. He should have a great final man in Ruiz, and also decent other helpers in Aguilar Mendez, Abolaji and Parashchak, who could also help Aular over some hills.
Well, shit. Not the startlist luck I wanted at all - Manninen in a sea of top sprinters and this really shouldn't have been the GT that Fouche missed looking at that open third tier. Willing to give Matti (with our best possible support including Vermeersch) a chance to perform still, but this is giving me a huge sinking feeling knowing that 21/23 remaining race days of his are going to be in this field potentially not scoring much.
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant." [ICL] Santos-Euskadi | [PT] Xero Racing
Super excited for this GT! It’s by far our strongest GT lineup with both Groenewegen and Novak present. Groenewegen must get the sprints right here, it’s key for our season as a whole, and we’ve also brought flat support to try to help him do it. Just hope AI lets us do it
For Novak, a top 10 looks very doable looking at the startlist (think he is missing from the overview of climbers/GC riders). I am hoping he can use the early hilly rated stages to his advantage, giving himself a good GC position before the TT, thus making it less to gain on others after the TT.
Thank you for a very extensive preview, Laurens! Really enjoyed reading about all teams and your coverage of key riders within each team. Looking a lot forward to see the race get going!
I guess the Tour startlist is gonna bee crazy deep because I expected a stronger one here. Also surprised by how much doubling up there is from the Giro leaders, though I guess I would have done the same thing if I didn't have Galta.
We have a top 10 goal here, and I think that's reasonable. We got our overperformance in the Giro, so i can't ask for too much more than that. Obviously fighting for a top 5 would be great, but if we settle in the 7-8th range that we're projected, I can work with that. No Aranburu or Skjelmose side quests this time, so it should be a fairly straightforward race tactics wise unless we flub things. Keep Galta in front, and hope he doesn't get swamped int he final weeks.
As opposed to the GC guys, the sprinter startlist is stacked. Looks like people finally got the memo that this is the GT to be at. Kind of disappointed I didn't give AKA a run at the Tour sprints now, but I like that he's not a favorite here as compared to Walls in the Giro. AKA traditionally thrives in these situations as a wheelsurfer. And with this being his last maxed GT, I think it gives him the best chance at a stage, even if he won't have the consistency to contest for the points jersey.
Thanks for the great preview!
RIP Exxon Duke, David Veilleux, Double Feature, and Monster Energy
Agree with bbl, the startlist looks rather weak again in terms of GC riders. At least we should get an actual fight for the win here - and honestly, I've got no clue whether it's going to be Morton's Mo/Hi superiority that will prevail, or Dombrowski's aggressiveness along with some good acceleration - or Bernal's great TTing backed up by monster energy stats. I think the route design is such that we could indeed have the final decision only on day 20 and the Bola del Mundo stage, which would be great for the race.
Looking at my team, Top 15 looks doable for Stüssi. If he can keep up with most 80/81 climbers, he has a TT advantage over most of them and might even get another Top 10, but it's not a must, in particular after his great Giro performance. And yeah, given that we don't have a TTT here, he'll likely lose another GT duel against Choi.
We've got some talents here, and we've got Berthet and Rohendi for breakaways (and mountain support). And we've obviously got Bol. But given that not even the 80 sprinters are good enough to make the list, not sure what we can expect. I picked him because I supposed a stronger sprinter field here than at Le Tour (which could well be the case) and wanted to send Groves to France. Otherwise, he's just a very solid sprinter on paper, getting over some hills, having a good engine on the flat and great energy stats. We'll see if that helps him starting from week 2 - if we want to reach our expected points, we definitely need some good results from him, despite the strong competition. At least one stage podium would be nice.
Im really intrigued by what my team can do here. On paper, i see four potential top 25 gc riders with Foss, Plapp, Eenkhoorn and Blums. Not sure how the game will play that out but i see multiple ways in which this could have positive return for us incl break success, KoM, team classification. Particularly with the final week looking harder than the giro one i suspect that the breaks might get more return on their efforts there which should be positive for us. Of course, a top 10 gc might be possible for foss even without that. I really hope that plapp will be recognized as a gc rider as he looks good in the u25 table.
On the other hand, i kinda lack the 73-75mo guys who tend to be more active in the start of the race. Which could be bothering for me.
Ansons, Kurianov and Dversnes are also intriguing break rider for the flat stages. And sureda is if course a solid sprinter. I think between them i dont have any rider here that has no possible role. Of course that doesnt help if kurianov attacks on the mountain stages.
The fight for red looks pretty open which could make this a great race to watch. Eyes are of course on Dombo as a potential victory could really solify their title ambitions after the fantastic giro.
