Happy new year everyone.
First news of the year is that Rohan Dennis has been arrested in Australia for causing death by dangerous driving following the death of his wife at the weekend. Sounds like a domestic argument gone very wrong.

Merijn Zeeman leaves Visma to become general manager of the AZ football team. I think it's hard to overstate his importance in what the team achieved the last 5 years.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

For those that do not follow all races on a daily basis:
Vingegaard suffers broken collarbone, ribs, Evenepoel fractures clavicle, scapula. Jay Vine, diagnosed with a fractured cervical vertebra and two fractures in his thoracic spine. Roglič, not injured as seriously, left the race in the team car. All involved in the same crash at stage 4 in Itzulia Basque Country. Thoughts go to riders and their family, also those not mentioned here, but injured in the same crash, all in all 12 riders.

That’s so rough, Jay Vine’s partner posted a photo of him on instagram in the ICU which is pretty sad. Hope he can come back from this.

While the focus is mostly on the TdF, there are sad news from Austria - André Drege has sadly passed away at the age of 25 from his injuries sustained after a fall on the descent of the Großglockner during Stage 4 of Tour of Austria. So far it is unknown if the final stage tomorrow will go ahead as planned.
This looks like a repeat of the Gino Mäder situation from last year at the Tour de Suisse. Perhaps the UCI may be taking measures against including climbs with steep descents?

I haven't really seen anyone speak out against a dangerous descent yet, are we sure this is the case? I mean, at some point you can't avoid the road going down. Another sad day for cycling either way.

Tragic news yet again. Another reminder of how dangerous the sport is. RIP

the descent was also in first half of the stage, and as far as I remember it's a well maintained road and not so dangerous (like Albula). unfortunately sometimes it happens, independently by how dangerous is the road itself.

Patrick Lefevere, one of the most successful and controversial managers of all time, is stepping down as CEO of Soudal - Quick Step at the end of the year. End of an era.
