Strada Appia Antica

After the PCT, the PT cobbles ! Today is a very unique route around Roma.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119201149_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Gerts has the best suited skillset to win today.

Some 30 km are needed to establish a break, which quickly gets time in the hills : pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Matsangos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Klaris, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Nych, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Dujardin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kng.png Salazar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Alaphilippe. Sadly, our reporter forgot to take a good shot of the break.

Zara, Rabobank, Lidl and Evonik are the teams leading the peloton.

Nothing of note happens in the 130 next kilometers. The gap lays around 4 minutes. Then, ahead of the last climb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Goldstein accelerates, which creates a split. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Teunissen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Spengler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Rutsch or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Girmay are the most notable names on the wrong side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119202359_1.jpg

At the front, we saw Grieg help to the chase, with guys like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Theuns or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Pidcock close to the head of the peloton, which in the end comes bacl together.

50 k to go, and the break hits the first cobbles sector (of 2). They have a 2’50 gap. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Wisniowski quickly loses time in the peloton. What a shock !

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119202919_1.jpg

When the peloton gets to the 10 km long sector, a group of 4 breaks free : pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/grm.png De Gendt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Kamyshev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Ariesen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Pidcock. A bit behind are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Sulimov, Senechal, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Vermeersch and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Swift. Zara and Evonik have to work hard to not let such a break go !

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119203209_1.jpg

The original break still is 2 minutes ahead.

All the more recent attackers are brougt back together, but De Gendt and Pedersen continue !

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119203450_1.jpg

There are new gaps, 1 minute behind the the first attackers of the day :
The first group is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/grm.png Pedersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Gerts and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Siric.
Then come pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Pidcock and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Senechal.
A bit further we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/grm.png De Gendt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Polanc, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/fas.png Van Hooydonck, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Vermeersch and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Sulimov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119203530_1.jpg

Those are all strong riders, so the trapped teams will have to work. 36 km are left.

Only the first five named manage to stay away, though not by much. They trail the break by 37 seconds. In said break, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kng.png Salazar has taken some advance on the others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119203856_1.jpg

Though they have him in the break, King Power doesn’t seem to have much faith, has the team has 3 men doing the chasing in the main peloton.

A strong relay from Pidcock puts the 5 favorites in the lead witbh 27 km to go. A peloton of 37 is 33 seconds behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Kamyshev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Spengler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Neilands (but Evonik still has Polanc), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Ferreira, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/isa.png Owen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Vermeersch (but Lidl still has Van der Poel) are the main names not in these groups.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119203947_1.jpg

His companions should be caught, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Siric resists ! In the end, it was down to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Theuns to bring the favorites back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119204316_1.jpg

16 km left, 10 of them cobbled. Siric still has a 8 seconds advance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119204411_1.jpg

He’s caught and a group of 10 takes the lead : Van der Poel, Polanc, Pidcock, Siric, van Hooydonck, Gerts, Senechal, Pedersen, Anderberg and Sulimov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119204625_1.jpg

24 seconds behind come pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Altur, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ziz.png Gaday, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Meiler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Theuns and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kng.png Salazar.

Then 31 riders, with many from Grieg.

Good work from Tinkoff ! Sulimov has a small lead on Anderberg and Gerts 10 km from the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119204705_1.jpg

A bit more than 4 km down the road, he still has 20 seconds on 11 chasers : Anderberg, Pedersen, Altur, Polanc, Gerts and Senechal.
Van Hooydonck, Siric, Theuns, Pidcock and Van der Poel are considered in this group, but barely hanging in my point of view !

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119204828_1.jpg

2 km and Sulimov extended his lead to 30 seconds ! Nobody seems able or willing to accelerate behind. Pidcock, Van der Poel and Theuns are a bit further behind, with Per.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119205018_1.jpg

500 m for Sulimov, but he might prove a bit too short : behind him, the sprint is on, with Pedersen in 1st, followed by a rested Senechal and by Siric.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119205128_1.jpg

But Sulimov resists and takes a great win in Italy !

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119205212_1.jpg

No win, but a strong 2nd for Pedersen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119205234_1.jpg

Coming from nowhere, Polanc takes another good 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119205253_1.jpg

Altur is 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119205308_1.jpg

Anderberg, Senechal and Siric follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119205320_1.jpg

Van Hooydonck, Gerts and a pretty anonymous Per follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119205342_1.jpg

Van der Poel, Pidcock and Theuns are the next row, right before the bunch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Appia/20241119205421_1.jpg

What an intense race ! The riders sure will hope to rest a bit tonight. But the cobbled season is far from over yet ! We’ll meet soon.
