Welcome to The Netherlands for the 7th edition of the Ronde van Nederland. Most sprinters got straight from the first monument in San Remo to the start here in Nuth.
The parcours is slightly changed, the final stage from last year (from Eijsden to Cadier en Keer) is swapped to the second stage. The third stage is a similar one to stage two, only a different starting place (Sittard-Geleen). So an extra chance for puncheurs in comparison with last edition.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Kaden Groves is the title defender, after winning last year for Amaysim. This year he's representing the colours of Jura GIANTS. He finished solid as 13th in Tirreno GC, maybe a good test for the Dutch hills?
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Eduard Grosu is feeling the pressure to perform here for Rabobank, the sponsor's home soil. The Romanian was already third here last year and in 2019.
We also include a puncheur on the favourite list with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Simon Yates (cycleYorkshire). He was 12th last year on an easier parcours and he showed his form in Tirreno (GC 3rd).
Then their is room for two Dutch outsiders: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ziz.png Fabio Jakobsen (ZARA-Irizar) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Nick Van der Lijke (EA Vesuvio).
It might be on the limit for Jakobsen, at least his sprinting skills are on point (Qatar GC 4th). On the other hand, Van der Lijke is familiar with scoring here: finishing in the top 10 in the last four occasions (10th, 4th, 3rd en 5th).
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Barnabas Peak (Aker-MOT) won the U25 classification back in 2022, now he's here for the main prize. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Max Kanter (Team Puma-SAP) will be looking to improve his 8th place from last year.
We also see the winner and runner-up from Tirreno-Adriatico on the startlist with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/fas.png Mauri Vansevenant (Fastned, sponsor's home soil) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Thomas Pidcock (Xero Racing)

Then there's a list of punchy riders with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Elie Gesbert (16th Tirreno GC), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Mathieu Van der Poel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Matej Mohoric (11th Grand-Duché), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Miguel Angel Lopez (3th Grand-Duché), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Attila Valter (4th Tirreno GC + stage win Ukraine), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Valentin Madouas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/oxf.png Sergio Higuita (14th Tirreno GC), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Toms Skujins, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Sean De Bie (11th Tirreno GC) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Schmid (5th Grand-Duché + stage win Portugal) among others.

Success is not very likely for us here. But maybe Malecki can play a secondary role and score some points.

Basically the MSR squad is here for full support of Vansevenant. Haven`t sent a sprinter such as Bauhaus or De Kleijn with him for most of the season and so far it works out well.

The hilly stage he can hopefully contest for the win and most important bonus seconds if not some small gaps.
The other stages it`s about riding with the first group and potentially still grab a few bonuses in the final. Top10 is wanted here but to be fair following his most recent performances I must hope that he goes for the podium even.

Fabianski
Was initially looking forward to this race, but seeing how awful the Schmid/Groves combo worked (or rather didn't work) in MSR, guess I only can expect another major disappointment. At least I'd be surprised if Groves took a single Top 10 looking at his current awful form. And Schmid will probably be chasing for no reason and then dropping back, instead of battling it out with the top puncheurs.

Thanks for the preview.

Thank you for the nice preview, Laurens!

A bit similar to MSR for us as well. Some decent leaders in Halvorsen and Higuita, but while Halvorsen lacks puncheur skills, Higuita lacks pure punchiness. So could see both/one of them finish around 15th or worse again, but then again one good day can mean a top-10 is possible. Hopefully a bit of luck on our side for that, as we're heading into some low-scoring cobbled races as well this month. Looking at the competition I could see Groves doing well, and by now it's become clear guys like Vansevenant and Pidcock are super strong as well, so would be no surprise to see them score big again either Smile

Good luck to all!

Let's see what Gidich can do here. It's not the ideal race for him, but it's definitely time for him to show up!

I'm probably here just for the xp, but if we get something more than just the finishing points then I'll gladly take it.

Thanks for the preview Smile

Super excited for this one. Decided against Groenewegen, as I like our other options to much Pfft Peak for stage 1 and a potential GC if it comes down to the sprinters. Valter as our option if it tips towards the puncheurs. Then we got Kragh as well, who should be a very nice wildcard in such a race.

Grosu started off great in Qatar, then not so good in Australia though it wasn't exactly his fault, but failed completely in MSR. So we really need him to bounce back in style.

We have quite a strong hilly team with Gerts, Kron and Remco to support Grosu. But now I see I only brought Van der Koiij as a proper lead out so that might hurt Edi in the end as he will probably get his own train.

Here's to a entertaining race! (but also good for us)

Really need a lucky result from Wall/Per cause the season is slipping away from us before we even hit the cobbles. Unfortunately I think that is a really unlikely result.

Thanks for the preview.

Quite important race for us. Lopez should benefit from the tougher profile this year and has all the chances to perform here. High expectations are there, hopefully we can deliver!

I wasnt completely sure which support setup would be ideal so i sent a bit of both. Blums, Polanc, Krasts as guys that can climb well, Kurianov, Neilands and Ansons as rouleurs and Baroncini as sth in between both groups. Hopefully we can get some depth results out of that too.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

The uphill sprint on Stage 1 should still be a nice one for Van der Lijke if he can get in to position. 2 hill stages this year may make it harder for him to stay in the GC mix as much as historically, but that's where Mohoric needs to come in and go for it instead.

RIP to the old Stage 3 route though - one of my favourite stage creations, certainly on the PCM engine it was designed on, for how it balanced opportunities between punchy sprinters and full puncheurs.

Old Stage 3 is now Stage 2, with a new Stage 3. Old Stage 2 is the one that has been removed.

Would be great if Kemboi could finally show something here, but fully ready to be "4th sprintered" again.

Expect De Bie to be treated as leader rather than vdP, but maybe PCM will prefer the latter - do wonder what he could be capable of given the chance to ride for himself!

It's our second wildcard race of the season and as long as we're more present than in Paris-Nice it's already a success. But with APP and Oliveira we surely hope to take some points away from the PT teams here Smile

Ah of course, I spotted the matching Cadier en Keer for Stage 3s, but failed to look up, and scrutinise Stage 2 too closely. Different race dynamic either way, but glad the stage remains then!

Surprised to see Siric contesting the sprint, too bad he couldn't get in the top 10. Hopefully Fedorov can get into the breakaway again and score some KOM points.

Vansevenant unfortunately not in the mix for the bonus seconds. Pidcock again getting some here which might be vital for GC.

The next two stages suit him a lot more anyway. So hopefully he is up there then.

Thanks for the report and a rather surprising win here.
The big names went a bit too early it seems.

Really thought Grosu had that one in the bag. And puncheurs getting bonus seconds even in the flat stage is not good news for our GC hopes. Let's see what the hilly stages will bring.
