Race Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Profiles/mg_britain.jpg

The race begins with a medium sprint stage, though the smaller bumps might be too much for some of the fast men or even enable some late attacks. The second stage consists of a 24 km TT which should give us a first idea for the final GC. The last three stages are hilly, with stage 3 ending after a descent and the two final stages finishing uphill.

Race History

The race has been on the MGUCI calendar ever since 2008, making it one of the most traditional races on the circuit. Two riders have won the race twice: Jonathan Bellis in 2011 and 2012 and Jerome Coppel in 2018 and 2019. And though both aren’t retired officially none of them is here as they both didn’t get a contract for this season. Who would have thought that back then? So no former winner is at the start this year.

Favourites

The field is pretty equally split between PCT (11 teams) and CT (10 teams). The race was won by those TT specialists who can survive the hills in the last editions, so it’s no surprise who tops the list of favourites here:

GC:
This race has written pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Dunbar all over it as he’s the perfect combination of TTist and puncheur for this profile. Jura has also two strong options in this category with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Brunel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Kung and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Masnada.

Time Trialists:
Apart from those TTists who will also compete for the GC there is also a big group of pure TTists here who will aim to take the win in stage 2.

Puncheurs:
The list of puncheurs is of course long with three out of the five stages made for them. But there’s also no clear favourite among them for the stages with their abilities ranging from hybrids to pure puncheurs. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Izagirre is the only one among them who should be a real GC threat though.

Sprinters:
The profile should only offer one real chance for the sprinters, but as that’s right at the beginning there’s also a yellow jersey on offer for them. The field isn’t really strong though as the sprinter stage might even be too hard for pure sprinters. So everything’s set up for another sprinter roulette there.

Looks like we might actually have a shot at 2nd place behind Dunbar here!
Pretty much the last "big" race for us this year, trying to fire on all cylinders. But I have no clue who should actually be our team leader. If we can make especially the final climb on stage 5 hard, Stüssi should be a great option, being the strongest climber on the startlist. Masnada is a better hybrid option, but a tad weaker in TTs.
Küng could be a good contender if the hills aren't selective, as he's already proven this year he's not easy to drop in such stages. Brunel is in the same mould, but a tad weaker uphill.
Rekita, Schmid and Theuns are here for stage hunting - especially Theuns could well have some fun here, but Schmid has showin in San Sebastian that he can just do an awesome job as well.

Looking forward to finally get some more satisfying stage results again - but it could also be pretty disappointing in the end. Getting 80 points here would be nice, though Smile

Thanks for the preview, good luck to all!

Our puncheur team returns to the forefront with our best suited riders for this race busy being not quite good enough at the ToA. Ideally Boswell, Bagioli and Narvaez will by very aggressive and help make the race hard on the punchy stages and get rid of more of the TTers. Not sure why this merited 5 Walscheid race days.

Don't expect a lot here but some good stage placings and maybe some top 20 GC positions would be nice.

Russo should be in the mix in stage 1 and maybe even stage 3, Teuns doesn't look to bad for stage 3, 4 and 5. So one good stage result should be in it, and though the TT is far to long for Teuns he's maybe able to snatch a minor GC placing too.

Good luck to all!

I quite don't understand my team here. Maybe I thought it was a TTT.
I don't believe Weinstein is strong enough to survive the hills, but maybe Iturria can get a top 10, and Doubey have a result from a break.

Thanks for the preview, good luck everyone.

Didn't count how many 9th places we recently got, but we had quite some of them. Sad to not get any points, but this stage was the bonus stage anyway - nice if we get some points, but we couldn't really expect any. And we got none in the end.
On a positive note, we had five riders in the Top 30, which is kind of a good sign for what's to come!

Now onto the TT - 3rd place could be possible, white for Brunel would be a nice bonus, too.

Congrats to Tryg, thanks for the report.

Hmm, Narvaez will need to be really aggressive to have an impact seeing as he isn't in the race.

Walscheid fades a little but not a bad first stage.

Thanks for the report, congrats to Tryg.

Oka coming in strong with a surprise result - hopefully he also leads a decent TT squad here as well!

Thanks for the preview and looking forward to the remaining stages!

This is really not that strong of a field, so I have high hopes for Izagirre and Uwizeyimana. Top 10 for both is almost the minimum expectation, though depending on how the stages play out, it also wouldn't be unreasonable if one of them doesn't get there. Still, with Ndayisenga also in play for a decent stage result, I'm hoping to get a decent haul of points here.

Congrats on the stage win, lief!

Thanks for the report first.

I wish Willi would have been a bit better in the sprint but thats how it is. Even If I get no points for it I am happy about our guys performance here, Roel van Sintmaartensdijk in the Colors of Fastned. He did a good job and showed some glimpses of why we wanted him. Congrats to roturn for this and congrats to the winner also!

PS: Ekoi just cant stop to score in the last part of the season it seems  Congrats kb too.

Thanks for the report, Imladrik! And congrats to lief for the stage win.

Russo finally gets his first stage podium for us, so we already have our stage result here. The ITT won't have anything in it for us, but the last three stages should be really interesting again.

Silent start as expected, since we didn't bring any sprinters here.
But now we need to perform.

Vital, vital race for us this, in the promotion battle.

Thank you Imladrik and congrats liefwarrior! Smile

Nice win for Rekita, congrats Fab! Solid performances by both Izagirre and Uwizeyimana. Good to be ahead of Stüssi and gain a decent edge over Masnada. On the other hand, we're just behind the likes of Laengen and Setiawa, who won't be easy to overtake. Vangstad and Kung with good TTs, too, but gaining 30-ish seconds on them could be doable. The groundwork is done, now hopefully we can execute well over the next three stages.

Thanks for the nice report, Imladrik!

Wow, didn't expect that Shock
Great race by Rekita, getting us only the 2nd non-TTT stage win of the year (not counting wildcards)! I expected Dunbar to take yellow today and not give it away - looks like Rekita postponed that by one day Wink
Brunel in 4th is an amazing performance as well, we'll see how well he can hold on in the hills. Same for Küng, who should be even more solid uphill.
On the other hand, Stüssi and Masnada finished a tad too far behind for my liking; especially Stüssi just doesn't live up to his 75 stat, losing out to weaker TTers again and again. Masnada a bit further behind, but with more punch he can hope for some bonus seconds.
And it will be interesting to see what Schmid can do with his 1'43" deficit - if he can launch some nice attacks, he could still achieve something very good.

All in all, one of the most successful stages all year long, which obviously feels great Smile

Thanks for the report!

First Thanks for the report!

Field too strong and we are simply not good enough. THats how you can summarize it. Loosing 1 minute here at a TT like this isnt bad in general but its crucial at a Race like the Tour of Britain.
But maybe that will lead to some freedom so my riders ca shine a bit at the next stages.

Congrats Fab! Can't believe you've won this few stages this seasons, but probably all the TTT wins, GC and classics results (and wins) make up for it Wink

Congrats Fabianski!

Very happy to see Vangstad up there. Now he'll have a shot at a good GC-placement. Wonderful start! Smile

Frustrating stage 1 where it seemed like we could have challenged for the win. Expected 2min today. Looking forward for better days. Congrats on the win Fab!

First of all, big congrats to Gustav, Stannard feels like the perfect winner for such a stage (especially with Schmid absent in the finale Pfft)! And Gesbert also doing what he can to keep Assa's promotion hopes up!

Really happy with what my team did here. It would obviously have been great to see Schmid or Theuns have a shot at the stage win, but the former worked a lot to destroy the pack, and the latter just couldn't match the better puncheurs on the last hill.
But I'm really happy to see Stüssi get that 3rd place, with the bonus seconds making up for his rather bad ITT result. In hindsight, I think Masnada shouldn't have sprinted to 4th, as otherwise I'm pretty sure that a gap would've been awarded behind Stüssi. But well, two really tough stages left to get some gaps and more bonus seconds. For now, both have an excellent GC position, and looking at some of the names Masnada might even be able to improve, being one of the top hybrids here. And if Stüssi can make his superior climbing skills count on the final two stages, who knows...

For now, Dunbar obviously looks like the big favourite to take the (expected) win, but I'd love to see our riders give him a good fight! The team standings definitely are a goal as well with our lineup, would be great to get another win there!

Thanks for the report, some really nice racing there on a hilly stage! (Would've been great to see something similar in ToNE tbh...)

Well, that wasn't ideal. Neither Uwi nor Izagirre in the first group. Can't help but feel like Eyob's attack did us no favors. On the other hand, with Ndayisenga in the first group, we now still have 3 riders between 12th and 18th overall, so still potential for decent scoring. But we need improvements if this is supposed to help us towards promotion, especially if Gesbert continues to do so well.
Thanks for the report!
