[C1] GP Kigali
Welcome to the capital of Rwanda for the 9th edition of the GP Kigali.
The race is just 150 km short and has a rather flat profile, but some short and steep hills, paved sectors and even combinations of both make it a very challenging parcours nonetheless - similar to some of the Flemish classics like Gent-Wevelgem or even the Ronde. So expect a hard race in which only the strongest riders can compete for the win.
The race has not one of the longest histories in the calendar, nor has it found its place as its category oscillated between HC, C1 and C2 in its short history, but now it’s classified as Ca for a second year in a row. The past editions nonetheless were spectacular, with just two editions decided by the sprint of smaller groups of two and five while all other winners came to the finish line alone. The time differences were enormous, with 10th place more than 5 minutes or 30th place more than 15 minutes down being quite normal.
The sole record winner is Summerhill with consecutive wins in the first two editions of the race. And as the American is aging he’s finally back in the PCT and thus here too, also being among the favourites. Spengler and Van Keirsbulck are the other former winners at the start and they’re among the favourites too.

The startlist is rather stacked with 14 teams from PCT and 8 from CT. It’s no surprise the cobblers are the favourites here with the usual suspects all showing up. The combination of cobbles, hills and a potential sprint should favor more well-rounded riders like Theuns.

I have no expectations for this race even though I should have. With the way Daniel has been riding all season I'd rather not get my hopes up! Thanks for the preview, should be a battle between Theuns and Stallaert for the win!

Penultimate cobbled race for Theuns this year - penultimate cobbled race as a maxed rider! Just like Dunkerque, the profile should be a perfect fit for him, but he was over-ambitious in that one and failed. Hoping he has learned his lesson, and then he should be in for another podium finish here! Points expectations correspond to a Top 5, which should really be on the table if he doesn't make any strategic mistakes like in France.
Thanks for the preview, good luck to all!

It's no secret how important this race is to us, on a few different levels. We've steadily improved from 16th to 11th to 3rd, and with Stallaert in the last year of his prime (like Theuns), this might be our best shot to win it for a while. I hope he can pull it off, even if he isn't a top favorite. Top 5 is still the minimum goal though.
Thanks for the preview!

Thank you for the preview!
Zepuntke should be able to finish top 10, but top 5 would be even better. Hoping for the home team to win this one!

Hum... Theuns was as strong as in Dunkerque, but he got his race strategy wrong the other way round this time. Whereas he went all-in too early in France, not following Stallaert or the Zepuntke group was a bad choice.
Still finishing 4th and reaching the Top 5 goal - althought towards the lower end - just shows how good his legs actually were. Well, if he wins Rheden instead, we won't be too sad about today's result - but winning in Kigali would've been a big plus to his palmarès for sure.
Congrats to Summerhill, who apparently timed his attack right this time. Thanks for the report.

Hnnngg .... So close! 2nd is a very good result, of course, and Summerhill in a race like this is a fair winner, but like I said, this might have been our best chance in a while to win here, and it almost looked like we could, but then we didn't. Still, a nice job by Stallaert for sure, and Teggart is in the Top 25 again as well.
Good debut from Habimana as well, showing himself ahead of the peloton. Hopefully he'll grow to compete for the win on home soil eventually.
Congrats lief on the very nice win, and thanks for the report kb!

Oh so close! Would have really loved to see Bralirwa win their home race! Nevertheless congratulations to them on a nice second place, and of course also to lief on a great win!
Zepuntke a bit lower than hoped, the non-cobbled hills didn't suit him I assume. Ulloa just missing out on top-25 sadly enough. Thanks for a great report, kb!

Max Daniel missing another decisive move on the cobbles this year?
Can't be too annoyed with two riders in the top 10 though but would be nice to even have the illusion of the chance of a win at some point this season from him.
Thanks for the report!

The cobbles team seems to have run out of steam in the second half of the season!. But what was that strategy though, Saya in the break, Ringheim attacking from distance? Setting up for failure really!
Congrats to lief and thanks for the report kb!
