Tour of Eritrea - S2
Imladrik
The 2nd stage of this year Tour of Eritrea is hilly rated, and indeed there will be climbing! 1 cat. 4, 2 cazt. 3 (plus the finish), and three cat. 2 summit await the riders. An important day for the best climber classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Yates is seen as the favorite, but there’s a bunch of strong candidates today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_108.png

The cat. 4 climb comes into play with only some km into the race. It’s won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Urcelay, who is accompanied by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Jarc, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Bereznyak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Thompson. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Baroncini is a few meters away. He manages to join them after a fes minutes, and the gap begins to grow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_109.png

Working in the peloton are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Weiss, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Hamza, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Diaz Suarez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Nyoni.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Baroncini wins the intermediate sprint. 120 km to go, the gap is 4’34.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_110.png

The hard part of the stage begins now! With the first ascencion of Trogo on three. It’s a difficult cat. 2 climb, 6,6 km at 5,8%. The last one will be some 20 km from the line and could be decisive for the stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_111.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Urcelay is by far the better climber in the break and he takes 10 points, for a total of 15. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Thompson is 2nd with 8.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_112.png

The gap is 3’29, with less than 100 km left.

Then comes the first climbing to Dormish (cat. 3, 5,3 km, 5,4%). The riders will also pass the finish line for the first time. It has a flatter finish, but slopes above 9% at the foot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_113.png

Once again, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Urcelay takes maximum points. He now has 9 more than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Thompson.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_114.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Jarc wins the 2nd intermediate sprint. The gap sits at 3 minutes with 70 km left, the 50 last or so being all ups and downs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_115.png

There’s action in the peloton too! Without too much of an acceleration, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Galvan Ramirez leads Higuita out of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_116.png

Higuita abandon his teammate and easily catches the break, where Baroncini and Bereznyak are dropped. Still a long way to go for the Columbian!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_117.png

Thompson is the one winning the mountain sprint and takes 10 points, thus reducing his deficit to Urcelay to 5.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_118.png

Domestiques and sprinters are being dropped from the peloton, lead by Xero.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_119.png

Only Thompson still is with Higuita as the 2nd climb to Dermish begins. The gap to the peloton is 1’15 with 38 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_120.png

And Higuita is the only one left at the summit, with 55 seconds to a mostly complete peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_121.png

He’s finally brought back in the descent by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_122.png

Following this action, the yellow and white jerseys, respectively pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Cisse and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Vauquelin, are dropped in the final climbing of the Trongo. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Manninen still is in the 139 men peloton, contrary to some surprising names, who were poorly positionned, like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Ciccone or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Burmann.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_123.png

No one is interested in the mountain points this time. They are taken by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Bystrom. Higuita pays his previous efforts and is dropped. Other important name who can’t follow are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Teuns and Gall, but most of Ekoi – Le Creuset team is here to bring them back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Müller is even further behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_124.png

The peloton reaches the final climb! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Rohendi leads it. Teuns managed to join, but he’s dropped as soon as the road goes uphill again.
3 km left, and there are still no move among the favorites.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_125.png

There it is! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Yates tries on long range attack, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Oomen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Min and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Choi.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_126.png

A bit more than one kilometer left. Yates had been working all along. Behind, nobody could really follow as Novak smartly disrupted the chase. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Meintjes managed to go past him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_100.png

And he accelerates like a bomb!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_101.png

With 500 m left, the sprint is on.
Oomen and Yates are tied, with Meintjes on their far right.
Behind we have Olivier, Arndt, Schlegel, Bennett and Padun.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_102.png

200 m. It’ll be a close call.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_103.png

Yates was the stongest today and he wins stage 2! Oomen is 2nd, Meintjes 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_104.png

Arndt bests Schlegel and Olivier.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_105.png

Bennett beats Padun by a hair.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_106.png

De Plus storms out of the pack to take 9th ahead of Carboni. Now to see which time gaps will be awarded.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S2/EritreaS2_107.png

There is a time gap! The first three take the GC lead in that order.
Urcelay takes the mountain jersey.
The young rider competition is tied, but Kipkemboi will wear the jersey tomorrow.
Lierse and Bralirwa lead the team competition.

Big mountain day tomorrow! Nothing can be taken for granted.
