Tour of Eritrea - Discussions
Imladrik
After being absent last season, the Tour of Eritrea comes back in the MG calendar, though in a reduced version. With a flat stage, a hilly stage and straight mountain stage, there’s a bit for everybody in the PCT peloton, except of course the time-trialists.

Before looking a bit more into this year’s edition, let’s have a look at the past.

The returning winner, Nikias Arndt, is the only one returning, as most others are either retired, or having good days in the ProTour. He shouldn’t be one of the favorites though, as the German should be supporting his leader, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Inkelaar.

GC favorites

With such a route, the winner has to be an excellent climber. Barring any surprise, he should be stage 3 winner. Stage 2 could also go to a climber, as the climbs are numerous and somewhat long, over 5 kilometers. A more punchy rider could win it, but won’t create gaps big enough to survive the last stage.

There’s much of similar climber lining to take the crown in a short race without any kilometer, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Padun stands a bit over the others. He’s the better climber, better in the shorter efforts too, and has a great recovery, though it might not come into much interest in a short race. With legends Pluchkin and Taaramäe to support him in the last climb, he’ll probaby not get tired enough to not best his opponents.

The main outsiders could be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Oomen, who makes a great duo with Novak and brings in excellent support, and in a lesser extent, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Bennett and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Olivier.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Novak, with their great accelerations, could be contenders for stage 2.

Puncheurs

The risk for the pure puncheurs to suffer in the multiple, longer climbs of the second stage has been well identified by the managers, and only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Müller really belongs to that category and can be considered as a leader in his team, though we’ll have to see whether pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Waeytens can do better. If not, the leadership could be given to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Min.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Edmondson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Higuita might be required to help their respective leaders (Chiarello and Aular), while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Teuns can be considered an outsider, in shared leadership with Gall.

One of our strongest lineups of the year here - a top-5 is a must. Yates should be one of the best over the two uphill stages, although there is some stiff competition here. Olivier, Chii, Oomen and Padun are certainly scary opposition - hopefully Yates can utilise his acceleration to his advantage.

Thanks for the preview Smile

Would love to see Higuita win it, but that last climb might be a bit too long for him.

Thanks for the preview (and the upcoming reports)!

Our focus has to be the second stage. With Teuns we have one of the outsiders for the stage win who also has a good supporting cast with Gall, Paulus and Chevrier. We wouldn't mind if one the latter would join the break there too and fight for some KoM points. The last stage will be too hard for any relevant GC result, so another day in the break is our best option there. Being in the breaks would be even more important as this is our only race this month apart from Paris-Tours, and as we haven't raced that much from April on anyway it would just be nice to see our riders again Smile

Would take another Top 5 from Choi, as the preview suggests, although there is a chance of getting crowded out! The support team is a mix of mountain and hills doms, so we should ideally have our leader in good positions on both stages.

Thanks for the preview Smile

Thanks for the support Smile the combination of these two seemed to work in Hallstatt, but that final mountain indeed seems quite a monstrosity.

If it doesn't work out for Higuita we hope Aular manages to finish in the top-5. Not a given, but it should be a possibility. Depends on form of the day for both of course, and also how the stages themself are being raced.

Manninen with a chance, but with how bad top sprinters perform in stage races I don't have too high hopes for him. And also scared of that Imladrik foreshadowing concerning the short stage Pfft Thanks for the great preview, and good luck to all.

The only C1 race for Chiarello this season. I think it was a wise choice to focus on C2 if I see the startlist here.

Very important race for us. It's a tough competition, anything from Top 3 to outside of the Top 10 is possible for Meintjes, but Top 5 has to be the goal. Hopefully he can already put some time into the weaker puncheurs among the climbers on stage 2. Should be interesting, thanks for the preview and good luck everyone!

I hope that Berhane can get some kind of home bonus! It's a strong field to ride in for a CT team, but here's hoping that he can do well there.
Good luck to everyone and thanks for the preview!

Big win for Fresh Cement!

Nice to see Medvedev active in the break hopefully he will be even more active once maxed in 2025.

The starting field is incredibly tough here which is expected with the low investment of RDs for a great return! Hoping that Monsalve at least can be somewhat competitive but you never know!

Thanks for the preview and report!

Great to see the team working all day and almost get rewarded with the win. We'll take second for sure though. Just hope our climbers didn't get too tired before the coming stages.

Congratulations to Simba's manager and thank you to Imladrik for the nice report Smile

Congrats Caspi and thanks to Imladrik for the report!

We couldn't have hoped for more in stage 1 (apart from a breakaway win) with loaned in Hopkins and loaned out Louvel in the break and Vauquelin getting the white jersey, tjus guaranteeing us at least one point from this race. But tomorrow is the day for us in this race, hopefully our senior riders will be as active then as the youngsters today and get into the break for the KoM competition as well as attack the stage win (or at least a good stage result) in the final.

Thanks everyone!

Not sure how Cisse managed to get a win here. Obviously the wind played a role, but still? I guess the race can already be considered a success for us Smile

All that for 9 seconds..

Congrats Indosat!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Not how I hoped the stage to go for sure. Got to give it to Higuita, he has balls. A shame that all our decent mountain domestiques get put at 2/3 minutes, whereas guys like Manninen seem to be able to stay in the peloton. If we make tomorrow very hard and Aular manages to finish inside the top-5, we'll still leave this race happily of course.

Congratulations to Eden, and thank you for another great report, Imladrik!

Sorry to see Higuita fail so bad, looked like a perfect stage for him...

Congrats to Indosat, didn't see Yates as a favourite for that one tbh with some stronger puncheurs present, but guess he was inspired by his twin brother's success in France Grin

Will be interesting to see how stage 3 unfolds with that strong climber field, should be fun.

Nice to see more break activity and Monsalve and Elissonde finishing with the main group, gives me a bit of hope for some depth scoring tomorrow, but with other teams picking up steam here our promotion chances are starting to become incredibly slim sadly!

Thanks for the reports and congrats on the win to Eden!
