La Tropicale Amissa Bongo - Discussions
Imladrik
10th edition for the Gabonese race, who has been run since 2011, missing 2012 and 2021. But only since last year is it a C1 race, with its actual route: a 6 km prologue, three sprinting stages, and a 21 km closing ITT.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Profiles/mg_tropicale.jpg

Last year, the race favoured a strong time-trialist, who was able to not lose time on a bad split in the last flat stage. But as the nature of the race evolved, it’s seen a whole set of winners.

The Ukrainian champion is the best time-trialist out there, no question asked. He’ll be supposed to take the lead on first stage, and to take it back to a sprinter on the last stage. Anything less than a podium would be a disappointment.

The Assa Abloy duo of Gonzalez Salas and Paillot is well set, with Los Pollos Hermanos Sütterlin, to fight for the remaining podium positions. Jura’s Rekita is the best of the rest, while in the same team, the Bissegger-Brunel duo will have an inside fight for the young rider jersey. Additionally, Jura and Los Pollos Hermanos are the best teams, and should fight for this classification, with an advantage to the chicken and their world-class time-trialists.

With three sprint stages, those one will fight for the points jersey and, of course, for stage glory. Halvorsen won one stage and the jersey last season. He’s back to be one of the favorites, along Vesely and Abdul Halil.
One of the sprinters could take back the yellow jersey as soon as stage two. The biggest favorites are Silvestre and Walscheid, who both are decent prologue rider. Another option is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Oka, who’s a very good prologue rider, but probably isn’t a good enough sprinter.

Prologue specialists

Speaking of prologue specialists, those four have a shot at a good result in the opening stage, but not at a very good GC, lacking in skills in the longest time-trials.

Wierd that I didn’t send Erdenebat here but still have hopes of a stage win. Kopfauf is looking good for that and Perera should be able to sprint well too!

Good luck to everyone!

More Bonifazio, and hopefully Sajnok. Thanks for the preview!

Two stage wins and a GC win for Zmorka to bring Los Pollos closer to the top of the rankings again Smile

I'll take it!

Hopefully Zmorka does what he needs to do, whereas I want my depth guys to step us as well for the first time this season. Sütterlin for a top-3 and Sterbini perhaps top-10 would be great.

Thank you for the preview, Imadrik. Good luck to everyone.

Looking forward to this one! First proper chance for Gonzales Salas this season, whereas I hope Paillot can continue his nice form from Norway. Improving on last year’s 4th and 8th would be nice! Smile

Fabianski
One of the few proper stage races for ITT specialists, so we obviously have to be there. While not having a top contender, Dunbar's absence frees up one Top 5 spot, and we're obviously hoping to take it with Rekita, the sole 79 TTer participating here. A Top 10 is the minimum goal, and given the weaker than expected competition - neither UBS nor Gjensidige, for instance - two in the Top 10 and another one in the Top 15 should be realistic.
On paper, that is. We've been awful in the Norway ITT, and I sure hope this won't repeat here. Winning the U25 and taking 2nd in the team standings would be other goals.
And then there's obviously Bol, who just had an awful month of May and hopefully will get back to his normal shape in June. Hoping his well-balanced skillset will be rewarded again.

Overall, Zmorka should definitely win this. Wouldn't even be surprised to see him in yellow from start to end, given that 6km isn't that short for a prologue, and most of the sprinters will likely lose more than 20" to the specialists there.

Thanks for the preview, and good luck to all!

Bjartne
Didn't remember we're racing in Africa this season. Hopefully Belevis can find a way to get some points here Smile

cunego59
Top 10 for Politt and Top 20 for Verona, and I'll be happy, GC-wise. Izagirre and maybe even Sammy Mugisha have a shot at reaching scoring ranks, too. And then if Silvestre has a great prologue, maybe he can collect enough bonus seconds to climb in the GC, though in this sprinter field, I doubt it. But we should be competitive on every stage, so this should be interesting! Good luck everyone and thanks for the nice preview.

Hopefully Walscheid's in the right place - 5thish on the sprinters list. Two 77 TTers for some depth, achieving reasonably productive anonymity again would be a success.

I'm going to be posting for Imladrik...

I wish my riders were a little bit thankful for that though Rolling Eyes

Congrats to Nemo Grin

Good prologue from Paillot from an early start number! Happy to be best of the rest behind Zmorka, Congrats Nemo! Smile A bit weaker from Gonzales Salas, but regardless the final TT is what matters.

Hopefully Konychev will involve himself in the sprints on the next stages!

Yeah ok, we can end the race here.

This is a good start for us. Top-3 tt'ists from us with a good result, and of course happy with the stage win and yellow jersey for Zmorka. He should lose it tomorrow/in the coming days, but hopefully he can then reclaim it on the last stage. Sütterlin and Sterbini performing better than some similar prologue riders, so hopefully they can carry that form into the final stage as well. Good depth in general with Aboliji and Aguilar Mendez also in (U25) scoring positions so far.

Thank you for the report, Imladrik, and for posting, Abhishek. Hope loanee Ocampo can up his performance on the final stage as well Smile

Pretty average TT result this time, still waiting for an overperformance, though. Maybe on the final day then?
Rekita in 6th is fine of course, being the lucky one of the 4" guys. Brunel was on the other end of that group, but still a strong start by him. Bissegger's PRL is a tad weaker than his TTing, but he's still a bit lower than expected. Same for Marchewka.

1-2 in U25 looks nice, but is unfortunately just worth 1 point per day for now. Hopefully we'll keep these positions until the end, though. 3rd in teams looks fine for now, expecting to be stronger than Lierse in the longer TT though. Congrats to LPH on the expected win, good thing that Zmorka will likely be back in the division he belongs to next year.

Now onto the sprinting stages, hoping that Bol has found his top form again. He has even managed to stay within the 20" window, so a lot should be possible for him...

Thanks to Imladrik for the report, and to Abhi for posting it Smile

Didn't realise we were here until Zana was mentioned as first starter in the race report Pfft Guess we'll take a 0 pointer here.

Okay, we're up there.
6th in team rankings is about where we want to be.

Seems like its a possibility with some points here after all.

Big congrats to Nemo!
Thank you Imladrik! Smile

Disappointing start for Kopfauf. I was expecting more from him as anyone would with his calibre of prologue skills.

Onto the next stage!

Congrats Nemo and great report!

Nothing major from us, but enough to show our faces! Good enough results from Oka and Hamza to try for lower GC places.

We usually have fallen away in the sprint when we have chased earlier in the season, so 5th is an ok result from Vesely here. Hopefully he can improve in the next two stages also.

Congrats to Ulrich and thanks for the report Imladrik Smile
