Clasico San José - Discussion

Welcome to second outing in the C2 Hills season. After opening the season with a thrilling race in Gisborne the CT peloton moves their attention to Cuba. The race itself features a tough hilly parcour that should favour the tougher puncheurs in the pack and with all the big guys in the division present for this race expectations are big. “Home-team” Podium Ambition have brought out all the big guns in hopes of a great result here today. Before we dive further into the startlist let’s take a look at the profile in full:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Profiles/mg_sanjose.jpg

The race has been run for two editions and one of the former winners are on the startlist today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Vliegen has finished on the podium for both editions; he’s the reigning champion and in 2021 he finished second behind Matthew Holmes, who was a surprising winner back then. Let us take a look at the biggest favourites for the victory:

Newly trained pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Eiking looks like the prime favourite on paper, but the Norwegian’s lack of mountain ability has always meant that there could be something to be desired. Same thing goes for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Vogt whose completes lack of acceleration makes it very difficult for the German to produce the decisive moves that his new manager is hoping for. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Jensen made the move down to CT in his final year in a trade that included Nairo Quintana going to Carlsberg. On paper the 32-year-old should have a spectacular season in the CT. The next two in line are two former BNZ leaders in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Edmondson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Watson. Edmondson is no stranger to winning in the CT where Watson used to be his lieutenant last year and now gets to be a lieutenant for Vogt. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Teuns is one of the primary riders to watch in this year’s edition with his strong hybrid ability potentially coming into play. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/crc.png Quevedo is always a rider that has the ability to surprise and should be in the final group when the victory has to be decided. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Morin pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Hugentobler closes out the initial field of favourites.
There are however a few more names to throw into the mix. Podium Ambition comes here with a Trifecta of potential winners in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Lagane, Mayer and Mutsumine. Lagane and Mayer have the abilities to turn the race on it’s head or win a sprint at the line which makes them dangerous for the rest of the pack if they can work together. Final rider worth highlighting is going to be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Lafay a rider with strong hybrid abilities for the level with a decent punch and the willingness to attack when required.

Thanks for the preview!
Last season, after an OK Gisborne, we had a zero pointer here. Hopefully, Lafay is strong enough with his support to grab a good position.

Now why oh why oh why did I make this my win goal... Seeing myself at the bottom of the startlist tells me enough there. Only slight consolation prize is seeing the race not at full capacity. Hoping Squire and Duchesne can work together while I think Betancourt will tired far too early.

Teuns and Lafay look like the best chances to me as I think this will pull more mountain than expected.

Of course this is a Win goal! It'll be tough, but any group finish benefits my team. I just want a good showing in a key sponsor race, and picking up any Goal points will be a welcome relief after many years without.

Hopefully too much of their attention isn't in Cuba, since the race is in Costa Rica Smile.

Feels like Eiking is due a good result.

That explains why two of our riders are now sitting at a beach in Cuba sipping Daiquiris instead of racing ...

But seriously: hopefully it won't hurt Teuns that we're only here with six riders as those are at least quality riders, especially with Le Gac and Paulus. Regarding the latters skillset which is pretty similar to Teuns the goal has to be making the race as hard as possible to get rid of the pure puncheurs (and T3As puncheur / sprinter hybrids) and then getting the result with Teuns or Paulus. Anyway I hope for an exciting race similar to Gisborne.

Thanks to WJ for the preview and good luck to all.

Jinxed it. Pfft Good ride all things considered. We don't really count on our C2 races for big points. Congrats to the winner! But I have to say, Stela Vita once again at the front with a good result. Something I've noticed lately.
Thanks for the report WJ!

Thanks WJ for the report! Congrats to DarkWolf with his victory Grin

I'm again happy with the performance from Edmondson. Again some good results from Bordeaux and Stela-Vita, very nice!

I feel for Podium Ambition, 40th place for the first rider Frown

Wooof, Lafay scared me with these two attacks (last year we had Doubey and Wackerman do that for 0 points), but seems like he had great legs. Very happy with this outcome, though it makes me wonder what could have been with a bit more teamwork, as he seemed quite alone, and the rest of the team is not that far off.
Now a good result in Tachira would perfectly end up this first month.

Congrats to Darkwolf, and indeed, nice to see new teams (Stela Vita and Simba too) have results.

And thank you whitejersey for the report!

Congrats DarkWolf! A well earned victory Always happy to see success for our Latin American counterparts.

Goal #1 gone for me and the end of a tough month. 10th is a bit better than expected, especially mid-race but every spot counts in those top 10 slots. Thought Duchesne might be able to sprint past a few more in the end.

Lafay finishing strong at least makes me think I can read a start list well!

What on earth? Mutsumine amongst the front group, somehow ends up 40th. Lagane outside the Top50?

Guys i'm going to back to purposfully tanking, it's so much more fun to be surprised when you finish in the Top100 vs this sh*t Pfft

It feels good indeed. A decent result with two riders in top-10 - maybe the best we could hope for? And of course always nice with some points for the team

Pretty unhappy about Vogt and Waston’s performances. Bad start to life for Adidas-Eurocash
