Welcome to the 5th edition of the Tour de Vineyards. The race changes its category again, this time from HC to C1. The 7 day event is also reduced to 5. Missing are the opening time-trial and the 'pesky' hilly stage. It still ends with a 20 km TTT, so those with lesser quality against the clock will be able to rely on their teammates, but significant changes can happen on that final stage. There are also 3 sprint stages on offer so some of the better sprinters are encouraged to attend the race.
With that said let's look at some of the favourites:
| FL | MO | HI | RS | SP | AC | TTT | Cattaneo | 70 | 82 | 70 | 80 | 51 | 70 | ***** | Taaramäe | 71 | 81 | 74 | 74 | 56 | 70 | ***** | Monsalve | 67 | 80 | 75 | 79 | 64 | 72 | *** | Berhane | 68 | 81 | 75 | 74 | 62 | 68 | **** | Rodrigues | 65 | 80 | 73 | 75 | 61 | 72 | *** | Pluchkin | 70 | 81 | 71 | 72 | 63 | 68 | *** | Stüssi | 71 | 79 | 73 | 73 | 63 | 66 | **** | Shikai | 72 | 81 | 71 | 76 | 57 | 67 | ** | Garby | 65 | 79 | 70 | 76 | 52 | 70 | ** | Ranaweera | 67 | 80 | 73 | 75 | 58 | 65 | ** | Reis | 70 | 81 | 73 | 76 | 50 | 64 | * | Talansky | 69 | 77 | 75 | 73 | 57 | 66 | *** | Fabbro | 65 | 78 | 75 | 72 | 61 | 73 | * | Elissonde | 66 | 78 | 73 | 77 | 55 | 66 | * | Schleck | 64 | 77 | 73 | 71 | 52 | 73 | * | Poljanski | 66 | 77 | 77 | 70 | 61 | 71 | * |
Cattaneo and Taaramäe combine two of the highest MO stats with the two best TTT trains. That on paper puts them at the top of the list. But most of the top contenders here do have a capable TTT setup, therefore the stage 3 mountain finish should be most crucial, even if only for bonus seconds.
As the fastest finisher Monsalve is a solid bet to win what could be an uphill sprint. Berhane is slightly slower, but a better climber. And the better climbers will be hoping the mountain stage is difficult. By the look of it it's not overly hard. 15 km at 6% avg. is nothing special and the steepest parts are the start, it gets flatter toward the finish. Still it all depends how the climb is raced.
Rodrigues won't like those flatter sections, but he is another decently fast finisher. Pluchkin on the other hand looks well suited, one more big result for his impressive resume? Stüssi is one of the weaker pure climbers here, but he's solid allround and has great TTT support. The rest of the climbers don't have as good TTTs, which makes their job harder.
Sprinter | FL | RS | SP | AC | Lead out | FL | RS | SP | AC | Zabel | 74 | 70 | 81 | 79 | Zhupa | 75 | 74 | 74 | 68 | Scully | 74 | 70 | 79 | 80 | Archbold | 72 | 69 | 72 | 73 | Kalaba | 74 | 72 | 79 | 79 | Rosas | 72 | 70 | 70 | 74 | Kennett | 75 | 76 | 79 | 78 | Venturini | 75 | 74 | 75 | 77 | Hayakawa | 73 | 68 | 79 | 79 | Li | 74 | 66 | 74 | 73 | Bennett | 71 | 68 | 79 | 79 | Oram | 73 | 72 | 69 | 70 | Nizzolo | 72 | 65 | 79 | 77 | Baterdene | 74 | 70 | 76 | 77 | Boivin | 73 | 69 | 78 | 79 | Thiery | 72 | 73 | 72 | 73 | Selig | 70 | 66 | 78 | 79 | Vanhoucke | 70 | 71 | 67 | 68 | Thwaites | 73 | 70 | 78 | 76 | Milan | 70 | 74 | 69 | 70 | Bauhaus | 74 | 65 | 78 | 75 | Plowright | 67 | 70 | 69 | 69 | Zhao | 74 | 74 | 77 | 81 | Arashiro | 81 | 67 | 70 | 75 | Kreder | 73 | 71 | 77 | 78 | Felline | 68 | 73 | 74 | 78 | Drapac | 68 | 60 | 77 | 74 | Cimolai | 73 | 66 | 76 | 75 |
The structure of this race makes it more difficult to balance GC and sprinting goals, but with three flat stages on the menu the sprinters field is deep, even if it isn't deep in quality. The quality rider is Zabel who has  a +2 SP advantage over the rest and he's probably Kraftwerk's biggest hope for a successful race. For that to happen Zhupa will need to be an effective lead out.
Apart from Zabel the rest of the field is pretty much a crapshoot. Scully, Kalaba are a few of the next riders that have brought solid lead outs. Well done to the Minions who were able to bring a good sprint contender while still fielding a top TTT unit. Let's also mention Zhao who tops the sprinters list in acceleration and could be a candidate to score some good results.

Zara have the top TT average with the Minions not far behind. Then there is a slightly bigger gap to Jura and Project: Africa. These are the four teams expecting to be in contention for the stage victory and of course the same in the GC.

Stüssi was strong at the end of Tour of Vancouver, let's hope he can continue this good run and keep up with the strongest on what looks like a rather easy climb. Mäder is his only notable domestique, though, but given that we're by no means the top GC favorites, that shouldn't be much of an issue.
With Masnada not here, TTT is slightly weaker than the lineups who won in Catalunya and Vancouver, but a Top 5 should definitely be possible. Hoping PRL won't matter at all given those numbers, but iirc above 20km it's irrelevant.
The major downside is that we don't have a sprinter here, but I hope this finally gives some room for attacks.
Thanks for the preview & good luck to all.

Hoping for a stage win here. Schleck might do well in the mountain stage as well but the TTT will probably ruin it for us. But a state win is hopefully realistic with Nizzolo

Really here for sponsor reasons and a TTT
Nice surprise to see Bennett might be competitive although that might ruin our breakaway fun
If Talansky can stay withy the big guys on the Mountain a top 10 might be possible...

A TT instead of a TTT would have made this race Cattaneo's to lose. Still have confidence in our TTT setup but we will have to fight hard.

Had some issues in planning which meant that we're sending Thwaites here as our lead sprinter. All hopes on Elissonde to provide an acceptable result on the mountain stage since our TTT core is still a few years behind the rest of the division.

All in on Taaramae here and he really should be fighting for the overall win!
Cattaneo is the only better climber on paper and our TTT is, on paper, the strongest here so we have to be hopeful of a good result.
Thank you for the preview and looking forward to the racing!

I thought we were here, and I'm happy we are not

Another outing for the Ranaweera/Nerz double act although we will be playing catchup after the TTT.
Zabel as favourite sprinter could be cursed as he doesn't have the Res to survive to the finish line, hope he can at least make some top 5s.
Thanks for the preview red.

Obviously no sprint participation for us, but good to see Mäder and Stüssi pretty attentive. Maybe add some breakaway attempts to that, and we're fully happy with those flat stages.
Congrats to marco, good to see one of your two real sprinters deliver here

Congrats to Marco winning the battle of the bands
Boily went full Leeroy Jenkins on us and the unconventional lead out technique nearly paid off.
Thanks for the report.

Great win from Zabel by over a bike length, I am guessing he was helped by a tailwind.
Thanks for the thanks and the great report red.
Lumpy stuff tomorrow - I have actually looked at the parcour now
Time for the Ranaweera/Nerz double act.
