1 Jour de Dunkerque - Discussion
The last of the proper mid-season cobbled classics is here in the form of the 1 Jour de Dunkerque. Known prior to 2018 as being a 5 stage tour, the race here in Dunkerque is now a 178.3km classic.
It's not the longest day out on the road but it's sure to be challenging with a mix of both cobblestone sections and hills to really make it a tough day in the saddle for the 128 riders we have on the start line in Dunkerque tomorrow.
Unsurprisingly, it's been a race dominated by the strongest cobblestone riders in world cycling. Those with strength in shorter hills have seen success due to the hills scattering the course from Dunkerque to Cassel in France.
| Winner | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 5th | 2021 | Stallaert | David | Spengler | Trentin | Zepuntke | 2020 | Baugnies | Naesen | Van Lerberghe | Tsatevich | Sinkeldam | 2019 | Van Keirsbulck | Kasperkiewicz | Suhaimi Ghani | Kluge | Ngandamba | 2018 | Kluge | Vermote | Rathe | Kasperkiewicz | Kulppi |
Joeri Stallaert was last year's winner and he returns again to defend his title. He's not the strongest over the hills but if he can stick around then he's a favourite to win it again.
Adam Blythe is equally strong over the cobblestones but equally weak through the hills. However, the Brit will be one to keep an eye on.
Matteo Trentin is stronger up the hills but lacks the fast finish of last year's winner. He was 4th last year and will want to make the podium this time around.
Tom David was 2nd last year and may well repeat such a feat with his own strength over the hills.
Sam Bewley is another rider to highlight. The Kiwi is a prolific winner and will contest for the win if it comes down to a sprint.
Lucas Manuel Gaday is a similar rider to David and will also be a threat while former winner Guillaume Van Keirsbulck is here to give it another shot.

Bewley has a very solid season so far and of course here's hoping, that he will add another notable result. Top-10 must be the minimum goal for sure.

After some pretty poor races for us, we need Daniel and GVK to perform well here to keep our outside hopes of promotion alive!
Thanks for a great preview LLS!

Not many chances left for Trentin this year, and yet the cobbles are perhaps the terrain of our biggest comparative advantage against a bunch of top 10 team. Clearly then, we need to capitalize. Top 5 is the minimum, but I really want a podium here to send us into the second half the right way.

No much hope for this one, I don't think Jon-Ander will be able to survive the hills.
Just took it because I had 2 RD to find and that it's in France.
Any point taken will be enough!
Thanks for the preview, good luck everyone. |

Not a new insight, but Joeri really needs to continue to carry us this year. Hope he can do so again here. Not the toughest field, but still nothing will be gifted to him. The win is the goal, but anything outside of the Top 5 would be very bad. Looking forward to this!

Another cobbles race where we expect Benoot to do well following his success in Cheshire.
Thanks for the preview

Deserved winner and nice to see our former rider David doing well, too. Congratulations, guys!
Bewley apparently hadn't much to give here, expect hanging on to the front group as long as possible. A 10th place ain't bad after all, so I will take it as a solid result on this profile, that ain't perfect for him.

Very nice to see the parcours having a meaningful impact on the riders making it to the final selection! Congratulations to Abhi on a great win! When looking at how the race unfolded, I am content with a 5th & 6th place from GVK and Daniel which puts our scoring back on track after a couple misses in Asutria and Chile!

Abysmal race by Trentin. I have no idea what he was thinking attacking on paved roads given his resistance, and he immediately paid for it. I also have no idea why my team always paces so hard and early on the cobbles, leaving Trentin isolated. He's usually able to overcome it, but not today I guess. 15th is atrocious, especially given some of the names in front of him, but what are you gonna do.
Thanks for a great report LLS!

I'm happy with 3rd, David and Benoot are great riders for this type of race, and beating everyone else is certainly good enough. The real highlight honestly is Okbamariam in 12th place though. I'm not sure when we last got some really good depth points from a support rider, so this is great to see.
Thanks for the nice report as well!

Indeed! What a great ride
After a somewhat disappointing race in Viana (mostly because of passivity rather than result), two great results this month in Cheshire and right here in Dunkurque feels very rewarding for the decision to acquire and then train Benoot in the off season. Think we can already say it was the right decision. He has been doing consistently well in both hills and cobbles races. Great effort by the team as well keeping their leader safe and the Kuroedas picking up some minor points is a nice bonus.
Thanks for the report LLS! Also nice to see David getting a good result here and having an excellent season so far. He wasn't this good for us last season

Another strong second place is amazing for David, he's really proven me right in building a cobbled unit around him and his strengths.
Benoot was on another level though and there wasn't anything we could do about him today.

Happy with 7th for Breen in this highly skilled peloton, bringing some valuable points in for our autumn hunt on a CT top 5-placement |
