GP Wallonie
--
Preview
The GP Wallonie is a fairly young race, this being its 4th edition. Stepping down from PTHC to HC category, it will have its fourth different winner as well, since none of the former champions are here this year. It’s still a very illustrious field, though, as we will see.
First, a quick look at the route. It’s not the most striking profile, but the finale is quite interesting with its three consecutive climbs in quick succession. First, it’s the Côte de Lustin, 2.7 kilometers with an average slope of 5.7% and a max of 11.6%. Then, the Tienne aux Pierres, 2.9km at 5.4% and up to 10.2%, and finally the riders go up to the Citadelle de Namur, 1.9km at an average of 5.8%, but the steepest parts go over 20%!
| MO | HI | ST | RS | SP | AC | Kinoshita | 72 | 83 | 80 | 77 | 68 | 77 | McCarthy | 67 | 82 | 80 | 75 | 65 | 74 | Areruya | 79 | 81 | 76 | 78 | 68 | 76 | Beltran | 79 | 81 | 73 | 72 | 66 | 76 | Borges | 70 | 80 | 75 | 73 | 71 | 81 | Benoot | 75 | 80 | 75 | 74 | 69 | 71 | Eiking | 69 | 80 | 78 | 74 | 68 | 76 | Boswell | 71 | 80 | 77 | 73 | 65 | 76 | Van Garderen | 70 | 80 | 75 | 72 | 68 | 76 | Prevar | 71 | 80 | 77 | 70 | 67 | 73 | Paulinho | 75 | 80 | 70 | 72 | 68 | 75 | Waeytens | 71 | 80 | 72 | 70 | 66 | 73 |
Kinoshita takes his usual place at the top of the list, and he’s come close before, finishing second in the inaugural race three years ago. But he has, again as usual, a deep field of challengers. The first tier probably consists of McCarthy, Areruya, Beltran and, because of his strong acceleration, Borges. But the other guys here will also be looking at the podium and think, why not them?
| MO | HI | ST | RS | SP | AC | Chernetskiy | 71 | 79 | 80 | 69 | 63 | 71 | De Plus | 76 | 79 | 74 | 73 | 61 | 72 | Chaves | 76 | 79 | 74 | 73 | 60 | 72 | Moscon | 73 | 79 | 76 | 77 | 59 | 73 | Gesbert | 74 | 78 | 80 | 78 | 68 | 73 | Gebrezgabihier | 70 | 79 | 74 | 74 | 67 | 69 | Van Niekerk | 75 | 78 | 72 | 75 | 63 | 74 | Errazkin | 74 | 78 | 76 | 75 | 63 | 73 | Azman | 76 | 77 | 69 | 72 | 65 | 75 | Felline | 66 | 77 | 75 | 73 | 74 | 78 | Paez | 72 | 77 | 74 | 70 | 73 | 76 | Meurisse | 74 | 77 | 74 | 74 | 71 | 78 | Stuyven | 63 | 77 | 75 | 67 | 66 | 74 | Lietaer | 67 | 76 | 74 | 71 | 66 | 71 |
Fighting for the podium might be a stretch for the riders in this tier, but it’s not out of the question. We have some specialists here, with guys like De Plus and Chaves hoping that their superior climbing skills pay off, while Moscon and Gesbert bet on their energy stats. We also have some quick finishers in Felline, Paez and Meurisse.
Domestiques and Punchy Sprinters | MO | HI | ST | RS | SP | AC | Gaudu | 71 | 78 | 78 | 75 | 68 | 70 | Eriksson | 67 | 78 | 78 | 74 | 65 | 76 | Storer | 75 | 78 | 72 | 73 | 64 | 74 | Slagter | 77 | 78 | 70 | 72 | 60 | 70 | Hirschi | 75 | 77 | 77 | 77 | 66 | 73 | Budyak | 74 | 78 | 72 | 67 | 57 | 68 | Calmejane | 71 | 77 | 73 | 76 | 72 | 76 | Oliveira | 67 | 76 | 77 | 72 | 75 | 78 | Kump | 64 | 75 | 73 | 70 | 79 | 77 | Kreder | 64 | 75 | 75 | 71 | 77 | 78 | Duchesne | 67 | 77 | 73 | 72 | 69 | 79 | Stannard | 72 | 77 | 73 | 75 | 68 | 76 | Mas | 78 | 77 | 74 | 74 | 60 | 77 |
Speaking of quick finishers: The true punchy sprinters can be found in this third tier. For the likes of Oliveira, Kump and Kreder, it all comes down to whether they’ll be able to hang with the stronger climbers all the way to the top of the Citadelle de Namur. Other riders in this group definitely have a shot at a good result for themselves, Gaudu in particular stands out for having finished 9th here against strong competition last year. But they may also be held back by domestique duties for their team leaders.

I fear this could be our first really bad race since promoting, which in itself is wild and just puts into perspective how fortunate we've gotten this year with some riders overperforming etc.. Meurisse to do his thing yet again, would love a repeat of Badaling but if we have two riders top 25 that would probably be considered a good race for us since the startlist is really strong.
This might be the strongest startlist in a non PT hills race ever. Seems like every single team's best piuncheur is here and then you have riders like Enric Mas casually chilling as well. Would love to see Beltran find his legs again here but i fear that might not be the case and that we get a sprint between Kino and McCcarthy.
Thanks for the preview!

Can't say there's much hope left for De Plus at this point. Thanks for the preview and the bet!

Boswell's second HC adventure, first one ended poorly either from a bad day or weak team or both. Just hoping for a more interesting performance this time. A top 10 would be nice, which should be doable with some decent daily form.
Thanks for the preview

This would be a race to be at if you loaded up on hills leaders for PCT, but of course, that wasn't the plan when we made our band selections. Hopefully this helps us avoid some competition elsewhere.

Borges has got to get a result here for us to be able to keep treading water. His positioning cost him in China, so hopefully he can be more attentive here and ride the coattails until the finale and then zip past the field.
Thanks for the preview Cunego!

Would love a classic win from Areruya this season, why not here? Guess like Strade it will come down to freshness and position, and with his aggressiveness I guess he will have the latter but not the former once again

Thanks for the nice preview!
McCarthy used to deliver so far and this profile should suit him. There's no reason to not deliver, I guess obviously can't expect a back-to-back win, but the podium simply must be the goal here.

Quick chance for Benoot to make up for a disappointing Badaling. We hope he can forget about the last race and continue his form from before that.

Given Moscon's season so far, even a single point would almost be a surprise... Top 15 looks doable on paper and would be satisfying, but I'm afraid he gets some special PCM mistreatment again.
Thanks for the preview anyway - and for the report in advance as well, as I guess I won't be in a mood to write nice things once it'll be posted

All of my concerns have been put to shame MEURISSE LETS GO. I do however hand my condolences to the managers here who had expected a way more selective race, certain riders here that you probably would have expected to perform better overall, the duo of Beltran and Gaudu not even cracking top 15 due to the hectic finish must be very tough for ROD.
If these performances keep going there's a chance we miraculously find a way into a promotion spot I think our PpRD right now is around 26 which is incredible, but I do expect that we will start falling down the table very soon.
Congrats to Sauber on the win and thanks for the report!

Moscon next, could have certainly been better, but it could have arguably been worse (and has been for Jura GIANTS in the past).
It's actually his worst classic result this year - to be fair, it was his first non-C2 classic, though... At least he improved by 104 spots compared to last year, where a certain Cyrille Thièry finished 16th for us - in PTHC... Looks like I should've kept that guy, he seems to be better than Moscon. Moscon is bad when the profile is easy (Gisborne, San José, Wallonie). Moscon is bad when the profile is hard (Hong Kong, Pais Vasco, Pologne). So, the result is clear: Moscon is bad.
Commiserations to redordead again, though, Beltran is just a joke this year. Same stats, same game version, same profiles as last year - and he's just so much worse. There must be some logic somewhere, I just don't see it ^^
Thanks for the report, though, and congrats once again to Sauber - TvG just rocks the HC hills this year! (which I definitely don't find reasonable, either, but at least it's a Swiss team benefitting from it ^^)

Missed the podium, surely not ideal. But 4th is still a solid result, I guess. Especially in a kinda messy bunch sprint finish, where things easily can go wrong. Congratulations to those on the podium!
And thanks for the report, of course.

Boswell very inactive and poorly positioned, not quite good enough finisher to get priority I guess.
McCormick always happy to see an American win though.
Certainly others had much worse performances and Boswell was first among CT riders. But in that field a top 10 was definitely there for the taking.
Thanks for the report and congrats to Sauber.

Areruya didn't have it today, guess I should be grateful I have a rider who comes 5th when he's off his game Congrats sammy, your team continues to maximise itself in a lot of ways, great run you seem to be on. Tejay especially performing above expectations, at least mine!
And thanks to cunego for the report of course, great as always
