[C2] Geraardsbergen - Bosberg
Welcome to the Geraardsbergen - Bosberg preview show. Another race for the cobble specialists to tackle and we will see familiar faces. Here're the winners from previous editions as well as the Top 10 from last year
Year | Winner | | | | | | | | | 2021 | Pieter Vanspeybrouck (Trans Looney Tunes) | | | | | | | | | 2020 | Danny Summerhill (Andorra Cycling Project) | | | | | | | | | 2019 | Guillaume Van Keirsbulck (NENT Racing p/b Hootsuite) | | | | | | | | | 2018 | Roger Kluge (Team Cerveceria Costa Rica) | | | | | | | | | 2017 | Guillaume Van Keirsbulck (Goldcorp - Nordstrom Rack) | | | | | | | | | 2016 | Kenny De Haes (Chiquita - Universal) | | 2015 | Sebastian Langeveld (Strava)
Last time on Geraardsbergen - Bosberg
1 | Pieter Vanspeybrouck | Trans Looney Tunes | | 2 | Alexey Tsatevich | Crabbe-CC Chevigny | | 3 | Guillaume Van Keirsbulck | HelloFresh | | 4 | Tim Declerq | Crabbe-CC Chevigny | | 5 | Tim Ariesen | Crabbe-CC Chevigny | | 6 | Sep Vanmarcke | Pas Normal Studios - Mikkeller | | 7 | Alexandr Ovsyannikov | Aramco DP | | 8 | Oliver Naesen | Crabbe-CC Chevigny | | 9 | Chequan Richardson | BWT Hyundai N Cycling | | 10 | Joanis Albert Nielsen | Strava
Unfortunately, time constraints while putting up this preview scripts have prevented us from doing a list of favorites, but if you have followed the previous C2 cobble races this season as well as the C1 Kuurne - Brussel - Kuurne which had some of the CT teams throwing their hat against PCT's best, you will see which riders are best positioned for the win. Instead, the writing crew decided to put up a team-by-team presentation.
Air New Zealand p/b Pirelli | CT |
Name | FL | ST | CB | SP | Frederik Nolf | 70 | 71 | 76 | 59 | Ziga Horvat | 71 | 69 | 67 | 67 | Evgeny Shalunov | 70 | 75 | 61 | 64 | Michael Vink | 71 | 74 | 60 | 64 | Adam Phelan | 71 | 73 | 56 | 64 | Daniel Ricardo Diaz | 67 | 67 | 55 | 60 |
This team has only one designated cobbler within their starting 6 and that's Nolf. With the rest of his support cast not being suited for the cobble terrain, it seems that the Belgian will be on his own.
Bianchi - Panerai | CT |
Name | FL | ST | CB | SP | Sameera Chatarunga | 72 | 79 | 77 | 70 | Karel Hnik | 73 | 73 | 76 | 72 | Viktor Manakov | 77 | 77 | 75 | 72 | Nihal Silva | 75 | 69 | 72 | 77 | Janis Dakteris | 75 | 74 | 72 | 77 | Tobias Bayer | 68 | 68 | 67 | 67 |
This team is perhaps one of the more balanced here with 3 very good cobblers in Chatarunga, Hnik and Manakov, as well as sprinters Silva and Dakteris who both have decent CB stat in case they are in contention for the overall win.
BNZ-Superhero Racing | CT |
Name | FL | ST | CB | SP | German Anibal Orue | 69 | 77 | 78 | 53 | Munkhtulga Erdenesuren | 72 | 72 | 75 | 69 | Maral-Erdene Batmunkh | 73 | 72 | 73 | 74 | Narankhuu Baterdene | 74 | 72 | 67 | 76 | Luke Mudgway | 70 | 71 | 65 | 76 | Lars Van den Berg | 65 | 66 | 61 | 61 | Maani Altanzul | 72 | 68 | 55 | 78 | Markus Kopfauf | 69 | 67 | 52 | 74 |
BNZ will be relying on Orue (23rd last year) for a good result here with Erdenesuren his right-hand man. They've also brought sprinters Altanzul and Kopfauf with the hope that the race will end in a bunch sprint.
BWT N Hyundai Cycling | CT |
Name | FL | ST | CB | SP | Andrew Fenn | 72 | 75 | 79 | 70 | Chequan Richardson | 71 | 68 | 78 | 60 | Tomas Paprstka | 75 | 74 | 75 | 70 | Max Losch | 73 | 72 | 71 | 78 | Valentin Stoenchev | 74 | 73 | 58 | 63 | Yoan Kolev | 67 | 64 | 55 | 61 | Polychronis Tzortzakis | 69 | 72 | 54 | 74 | Momchil Robov | 71 | 72 | 50 | 69 |
Like Bianchi, BWT Hyundai will also rely on a trinity of their own - Fenn, Paprstka and Richardson, who is no stranger of this race having finished 9th last year and 7th in 2019. 12th placed from last year Losch is also here to support his team's cause in the cobbles.
Caja Rural Cycling Team | CT |
Name | FL | ST | CB | SP | Ramon Sinkeldam | 73 | 72 | 76 | 67 | Ramon Domene | 73 | 73 | 76 | 74 | Marek Konwa | 68 | 68 | 72 | 63 | Xabier Mikel Azparren | 65 | 65 | 60 | 62 | Fernando Barcelo | 70 | 71 | 58 | 67 | Matevz Govekar | 69 | 68 | 58 | 68 | Jhojan Garcia | 67 | 70 | 55 | 63 | Alfredo Balloni | 72 | 65 | 53 | 62 |
Sinkeldam will be the best bet for yet another of the newcommers in the MGUCI circle trying their luck on the cobbles with Domene being their other best choice. However, the rest of their starting 8 lack the cobble skills.
Colombini-Adler AP | CT |
Name | FL | ST | CB | SP | Yves Lampaert | 75 | 74 | 78 | 60 | Dries De Bondt | 76 | 72 | 72 | 74 | Luigi Giulietti | 69 | 69 | 69 | 66 | Loic Vliegen | 71 | 76 | 68 | 66 | Daniel Bonello | 68 | 68 | 67 | 66 | Felix Sprenger | 70 | 71 | 65 | 66 | Andre Alexander Gonzales | 66 | 68 | 61 | 64 | Federico Olei | 69 | 73 | 51 | 75 |
From San Marino Colombini-Adler AP have decided to count on Lampaert once again to lead the charge. Though it's odd that Saber has been left out once again, but perhaps the manager KaiserAdler thought the Moroccan champion would be better suited elsewhere.
Crabbe-CC Chevigny | PCT |
Name | FL | ST | CB | SP | Tim Ariesen | 75 | 74 | 75 | 70 | Fabio Van Den Bossche | 68 | 63 | 68 | 62 | Carl Fredrik Hagen | 68 | 74 | 65 | 71 | Timo Kielich | 68 | 65 | 64 | 68 | Kamiel Bonneu | 68 | 72 | 62 | 60 | Paul Daumont | 66 | 67 | 62 | 69 | Martins Pluto | 67 | 66 | 61 | 69 | Diogo Barbosa | 64 | 64 | 58 | 58 |
Last year Crabbe gambled on a mostly cobble oriented squad which in the end paid off excellently. Being a PCT team though comes with its limitations in such races, but 5th placed from last year's race Ariesen is looking to make his team proud once again.
Le Creuset | CT |
Name | FL | ST | CB | SP | Matis Louvel | 71 | 68 | 69 | 67 | Alexandre Balmer | 67 | 69 | 63 | 61 | Alan Boileau | 66 | 64 | 62 | 66 | Antoine Berlin | 69 | 75 | 55 | 56 | Arman Garibian | 67 | 67 | 55 | 60 | Maxime La Lavandier | 68 | 72 | 54 | 63 | Dylan Teuns | 68 | 73 | 50 | 66 | Clement Chevrier | 65 | 69 | 50 | 60 |
A pretty pedastrian affair from Le Creuset here, which is a head scratcher - what would be this team's purpose in this race and what would they want to accomplish?
Minions - Subwoolfer | PCT |
Name | FL | ST | CB | SP | Laurens Sweeck | 73 | 71 | 76 | 70 | Mathias De Witte | 74 | 75 | 75 | 71 | Leandro Marcos | 74 | 71 | 74 | 65 | Jasper Stuyven | 70 | 75 | 62 | 66 | Jan Stöckli | 64 | 68 | 61 | 59 | Didier Merchan | 62 | 62 | 58 | 58 | Mulu Hailemichael | 60 | 64 | 58 | 60 | Dayer Quintana | 69 | 73 | 50 | 61 |
Another PCT team right now it's the yellowest of the teams. And they have a decent starting squad with Sweeck and De Witte being their leading duo.
Pas Normal Studios - Mikkeller | CT |
Name | FL | ST | CB | SP | Christoph Taubel | 73 | 69 | 78 | 61 | Sep Vanmarcke | 73 | 72 | 77 | 67 | Alexander Kristoff | 69 | 66 | 72 | 77 | Christopher Juul-Jensen | 72 | 74 | 69 | 65 | Julius Johansen | 69 | 67 | 62 | 65 | Johan Price-Pejtersen | 68 | 66 | 60 | 61 | Mario Vogt | 73 | 78 | 58 | 62 |
Vanmarcke is returning for yet another crack at this race after finishing 6th last year. But he's not alone - Taubel has also set his sights on the win, while Kristoff is hoping for a bunch sprint
Podium Ambition | CT |
Name | FL | ST | CB | SP | Darren Matthews | 72 | 70 | 75 | 76 | Jay Major | 74 | 74 | 70 | 77 | Jyme Bridges | 73 | 70 | 70 | 70 | Cristian Perez | 69 | 70 | 69 | 66 | Jacob Kelly | 67 | 67 | 67 | 68 | Tyler Cole | 70 | 66 | 66 | 69 | Dylan Redy | 68 | 67 | 65 | 68 | Connor White | 70 | 67 | 63 | 67 |
In terms of overall package Podium Ambition's Matthews is perhaps one the best here, but as it was established stats aren't everything. But still, he's one of the contenders here.
Staffbase - BHP | CT |
Name | FL | ST | CB | SP | Gianni Vermeersch | 77 | 74 | 75 | 74 | Kris Boeckmans | 69 | 68 | 70 | 77 | Jonas Koch | 73 | 71 | 69 | 72 | Roy Jans | 76 | 74 | 68 | 74 | Juri Hollmann | 68 | 66 | 68 | 61 | Eliot Lietaer | 70 | 74 | 67 | 66 | Tim Van Dijke | 70 | 68 | 66 | 68 | Jensen Plowright | 67 | 63 | 61 | 69 |
The final team of the newcommers and they also have a combo rider in Vermeersch. They also have sprinter Boeckmans who would look to be with the leaders for the decisive km's to have a fighting chance.
Strava | PCT |
Name | FL | ST | CB | SP | Bert-Jan Lindeman | 72 | 70 | 75 | 73 | Joanis Albert Nielsen | 75 | 71 | 74 | 73 | Thanawut Sanikwathi | 72 | 70 | 72 | 78 | Jens Debusschere | 72 | 72 | 70 | 70 | Jesper Hansen | 72 | 76 | 64 | 66 | Pawel Bernas | 76 | 75 | 62 | 70 |
Strava has brought a 6-man squad, but even though they have decent riders like the 10th placed from last year Nielsen, Lindeman and Sanikwati, compared to other teams Strava is highly unlikely to be top contenders.
Tafjord Kraft | CT |
Name | FL | ST | CB | SP | Vegard Breen | 77 | 72 | 78 | 73 | Jesse Kaislavuo | 73 | 73 | 73 | 67 | Vegard Robinson Bugge | 68 | 71 | 67 | 62 | Martin Weiss | 70 | 75 | 59 | 73 | Daniel Paulus | 69 | 71 | 56 | 62 | Kristian Dyrnes | 68 | 73 | 54 | 65 | Bjorn Tore Hoem | 67 | 74 | 53 | 58 | Edvald Boasson Hagen | 73 | 75 | 51 | 69 |
Vegard Breen is perhaps the top favorite for this race, but with his supporting cast being weak when it comes to cobbles, could this prove to be the achilles heel for Tafjord Kraft?
Trans Looney Tunes | PCT |
Name | FL | ST | CB | SP | Pit Schlechter | 74 | 71 | 75 | 61 | Tesfay Abraha | 72 | 70 | 75 | 74 | Owain Doull | 72 | 71 | 71 | 73 | Harm Vanhoucke | 70 | 69 | 63 | 67 | Luka Pibernik | 72 | 76 | 61 | 68 | Roman Senyenov | 70 | 68 | 60 | 68 | Michael Cuming | 70 | 74 | 58 | 64 | Tomoyuki Iino | 67 | 71 | 53 | 58 |
And last, but not least - we present you the winning team from last year. Unfortunately, Vanspeybrouck is not there and the limitations for PCT teams mean that Schlechter and Abraha are the best Trans Looney Tunes could offer for this race. But stranger things have happened before and could we see an outsider.
That's it from the preview show. Stay tuned for the race as the preview show crew hands over to AbhishekLFC's crew for reporting duties

Thanks for the preview ivan. The issue with Saber was that he only has 36 RDs. And I had to chop some cobble races from his schedule. I don’t count on the win here from Lampaert. Maybe a late attack from one of the domestiques perhaps. Good luck everyone

A pretty pedastrian affair from Le Creuset here, which is a head scratcher - what would be this team's purpose in this race and what would they want to accomplish?
That's a bit unfair. We send our best cobbler and some of his best domestiques. Mainly we're just plain shit in this kind of races (that's why this race is half of our cobbles season). Our goal? Being a little bit less shit than in Gent-Wevelgem and getting at least three other riders within the bottom 6
Let's just face it: We're the designated loser in this race. But in doing so we allow the others to have a good time, enjoy themselves and don't worry about who's getting them home (at least if we finish in time).
So everyone have a good time, enjoy yourself (and the race) and don't worry who's getting you home (though looking at the stats, you probably can shower, have a good dinner and most of the party before we're there to do this).

This out Win Goal, but i don't expect that. I'd just like to us continue putting a rider or two in the break and an improvement from Matthews to be contesting for a Top10 finish.

Definitely not a stacked startlist for this very hard race. Outsiders like Vermeersch, Matthews, Sinkeldam, Sweeck and others could go far here as well I think.
Go Lampi!

In the break again is good, Matthews again struggling in a leadership role is less good. He should be more competitive than this but overall it doesn't really matter to our season, because we have no real target or expectation.
Kelly and Redy just keep racking up the breakaway efforts, doing a good job at earning long term security on the squad.

Decentish result. De Bondt might’ve been smarter to stay in the peloton and force a better result in the end but no less, three pointscoring riders is good imo. Thanks for the report and congrats to the winners.

Sinkeldam still has some fire in those legs, love to see it. Even more surprised by a declined Juul-Jensen in the top 10 though!

Using that hill stat to his full advantage! Sweeck got jinxed by Nemo and De Witte held on to a nice position. As far as C2 outings go, perfect!
Thanks for the report Abhi and congrats ivan!

I hoped for a slightly better result, after Ariesen finished 5th here last year.
Congrats to BWT for the win and thanks Abhi for the report!

Breen should really have managed to take a podium here, but Kaislavuo probably overperformed, so we'll take 4th and 6th |
