Volta a Portugal Discussion

Yeesh, that's terrible by Madrazo. Poor positioning contributed, but he's had to have a bad day as well. Granted, he's not the best puncheur and I could live with losing time to maybe Bennett or Guldhammer (Phinney is in a different league, that's fine). But losing so much to Galta or Aular is inexcusable. Also, where the f was his support? Ndayisenga alone should have been well in the mix with his skillset, Khederi as well. No idea what happened there.

I'm not writing off the podium just yet, a lot can happen on that mountain stage. But Oomen and Galta might be tough to beat. First, we need a good time trial to gain time ideally on those two but especially the likes of Barguil, Bennett and Guldhammer. And then go all out in the mountains, hopefully. If Madrazo ends up in 5th to 7th or something like that, it would be a huge blow considering the amount of race days we're commiting here. We'll see what happens.

Thanks for the nice report roturn, at least it was easy to keep track of how poorly Angel was doing Pfft

Strong ride by Krasts. But its time that Sergis and Gavars join into breaks...

When Borisavljevic has his bad day I'll be screwed cuz Pogacar will probably work for him.

Hopefully a couple of guys in the break tomorrow, pleeease? Otherwise what’s the point of us even being here.

Congrats Croatia, Phinney in another league as usual. Thanks for the report roturn!

Weird stage but very important win that I did not expect. Great to see Phinney this strong, also with regards to the points classification. This could've hardly gone better. Interesting though how Cherkasov again is our 2nd best rider with Petelin and Jaramillo nowhere to be seen. Guess they save themselves for the final mountain stage, which is fine as well.

Strange finish. Looks like Guldhammer was fairly strong there but got caught out of position and had to make up the gap himself. With Aranburu by his side, that's disappointing. I also really don't like losing time to pure climbers on a hilly finish. We need to be capitalizing on the hills, not just surviving, because the TT and mountains will have bigger gaps that are not in our favor. Right now the top 5 goal is still possible with a few lucky stages, but very unlikely.

As for the rest of the team, our lead in the teams classification disguises that this was not a great day at all. Aranburu was finally near the front, though clearly not close enough to make a meaningful difference, and he's out of GC. Meanwhile, Eg completely tanked on GC, which is unfortunate since he stage racer skillset would have been nice to snag a minor placing. Instead Gregaard was the solid helper of the day, and he's going to lose any GC spot in the TT.

Need a big stage from Guldhammer tomorrow. Not sure he has it in him, but we need to try.

Now that's more like the "disappointmend" we expected from here. Storer is concerning though, since he seems to not give a sh*t and finishes quite far behind on regular base.

Go back to breakaways, guys!

Phinney finally got the leader's jersey. Very difficult to see him loose it. Congratulations, Croatia!

A pity Mohoric wasn't able to make more out of this stage. Slightly worrying, seeing what a couple of other puncheurs were able to. Also to see Amezawa drop completely out of contention, hurts. We're struggling to find great race days for him, no doubts about that.

The riders we put into these breaks are simply wrong. Vila is a domestique and nothing more. Kastrantas is kinda OK, but with riders like Spanopoulos, Koretzky, Mavrikakis and Miltiadis all better suited it's unfortunate really...

5th is an OK result for Kastrantas, but doesn't really aid the team in terms of points. I would have liked to see him dig deep for KOM points - but I guess there's still a chance he can fight for minor points there if he goes on the final stage aswell - but we really need to send Mavrikakis up the road there as our GC looks very very poor.

Koretzky in the front group with Vila (after losing contact to the break) is good for the temporary Team GC, but we are not going to be in the top 10 after the TT and mountainstage, so it doesn't really matter.

Fingers crossed that something magical happens in the mountain stage, otherwise this will be a very very bad race for us.

Congrats for a greak stagewin tsmoha. Your little rant worked wonders Smile

4th on the day by Gavars is much appreciated. We need to get riders like him into the breaks in these races and getting some (minor) stage points plus the KoM points is important for us. Also collecting so many KoM points is what we want. Hopefully, he can join the break again on the mountain day to continue that.

Finally, Krasts climbs further in the GC. Lvl1 rider and he is up to 23rd now. Very unlikely to hold it in the mountains but wow...

Bennett has looked strong but we needed much more decisive hilly stages really. Hope I can be proven wrong

Yeah! Thanks Smile

Hamilton does, what I was hoping for him to do this season. That's why we had a little bidding war in him, actually, after losing him in the renewals (not intended). Since he's slightly overpaid for a domestique, I'm more than happy with this stage-win! Also he's one of my personal favorites on the team, so.. nice "bounce back" from two quiet Amaysim days here. Storer though...

Fabianski
Interesting couple of results...
Banaszek winning S4 is not a huge surprise, although I'd have bet on a punchy Sprinter like Ackermann. Trondsen and especially Theuns maybe a bit disappointing there.

Also rather surprised to see Phinney take S5, but with the final hill's length the stage can go to a climber or a puncheur - most likely a punchy climber. And although there are more punchy ones in the peloton, Phinney has shown in the past that he can win pretty much any stage that finishes uphill (or is a TT).
Commiserations to Bralirwa, though, Madrazo even outside the Top 20 there is plain awful. Hopefully he strikes back on the double-Torre stage!
On the other hand, I love to see Barguil doing well for UBS, and given the Top 10 riders' TT strenghts, he should have a decent shot at a GC Top 5.

And then we finally had Amaysim striking back on S6. They're just doing incredibly well with their breakaway efforts in this race, and although a decent GC is out of reach, they could still leave the race with a good points haul in the end. Congrats!

Oh damn, so close there for Rohendi. A real shame, he did well to still finish third after having to lead out all the others. Thought he had it after taking it easy and not going for the KOM like the others. Hamilton just too strong. Awesome result for him, exactly what I expected with his stats. He’s even up to 11th in the GC after that too which is nice, but may actually prevent him from future breaks which is bad. Kolar is solid as so hopefully if Teten isn’t allowed up the road, Kolar can take his place. Fingers crossed!

Thanks for the report roturn!

Well, it seems like we had the right idea. We were on the front and kept all our guys ahead of the splits. Unfortunately it seems like we gave up and softpedaled at just the wrong time, letting some guys come back in and not making a play at the stage. There are a few guys I really wanted Guldhammer to gain time on before the TT and mountains. Now they're bound to fly way above us in the final two stages. The top 5 goal is probably off the table now. We'll see after the TT, but barring tremendous daily form, the focus should probably be on staying in the top 10 and then keeping as many guys in minor scoring position as possible.

And yeah, lots of wasted race days for Aranburu here. I guess my planning is already ruining my team construction. Obviously a few other top puncheurs also wasted their time here, but still sucks.

DubbelDekker
Sadly none of the hilly stages worked out like we hoped at all. Lutsenko only showed his class in stage 6, after the stage was already given away to the 8 man break.

We scored very little points so far and after the mountain stage his GC will likely be gone as well. We now need a miracle to turn this tour into a moderate success.

I can only second DubbelDekker for our race so far Pfft

Seems like we're all in for the KoM jersey now. Really hope Bravo can fight for it, though, it very much depends on how strong riders the AI allows up in the breakaway. The development on the last couple of stages, isn't really good for his chances, but at least we've got hope!

cunego59
Again Madrazo finished pretty far behind his GC competitors. At least no time loss this time. I really hope that he will show what he can do in the mountains. Nothing's lost yet, but I'm honestly a bit scared of the TT ...
