@Fabianski
At this point several teams thought they had a shot at winning the stage - so seems reasonable that they would force some selection and make the catch. EF Education had dreams of the yellow, so to let van Aert cook ahead only to then be caught was a great position. Only thing they needed was for Pogacar not to target the yellow already - unfortunately for them, he did.
Why Alpecin chased is beyond me however. Everyone can see van der Poel is suffering.

Can someone explain the tactics behind Wout going for broke with a day long breakaway today? Surely on this type of profile he's a stage favorite from the peloton. I get that it's heroic or whatever to see the yellow jersey doing this kind of stuff, but it seemed pretty stupid today. Not to mention Jumbo then chased Vuillermoz and led out Pogocar with Roglic.
Grischa Niermann said that because Wout would have been the big favorite, they expected that no team would work with them in the peloton and they didn't want to control the race all day long. The plan was for Wout to join a big group of 15-20, and when that didn't materialize, I suppose they went for this instead. I think it's a fair assumption that a breakaway would have made it if Wout wasn't in it, so I can kinda see it, but the way it turned out was obviously pretty bad.

I can definitely understand EF's dream of getting yellow, sure. But Pog was already so strong in the previous stages that I can't really see how anyone (except WvA maybe) could still think they could beat him in an uphill sprint... For EF, the optimal scenario would've been if Vuillermoz (or another late attacker) would've taken the win, as 2nd place wouldn't have given enough bonus seconds for Pog to overtake Powless. Well, it is what it is...
I still think WvA's attack wasn't the worst idea - if the other teams wouldn't have cooperated, it'd have been an easy stage win for him, but in any case his team didn't have any work to do all day long. WvA was never going to win the tour anyway...

With a bigger group in front the stage would have went to the breakaway easily. But not a lot of people were happy to be in a breakaway with him either.
Bora and EF thinking someone can beat Pogacar is more laughable than what Jumbo were trying to do.

Vlasov though has been showcasing a lot of progres in these sort of finals though. He won a similar (albeit a bit more classic) stage recently in Switzerland aswell as being 3rd in Fleche.
What I don't like about Bora so far (will likely change) is that they don't invest in the breaks instead. For yesterdays (and todays) stage they have so many great riders. Schachmann for the final yesterday, Konrad, Kämna and Grossschartner for the break - instead they make a huuuuge effort day after day in the reeling in riders. I know Politt and Haller is probably doing a lot too, but it seems like way too many riders are bound to work for Vlasov also when it makes no sense.
Yesterday it was great to see them fight him back, but hadn't they spent a lot of energy on the day they would likely have made the catch earlier to help Schachmann and Vlasov fight for a top 5.
I do think, though, that Vlasov will be 3rd in the GC.

Actually Bora and I think it was even Vlasov for some reason himself were in that first bigger break around Cort Nielsen, Geschke, Laengen yesterday. So it`s not like they didn`t try.
On the earlier days except for that one Clarke stage win, there just wasn`t a lot of reason to go into the break, in especially seeing how tough the next couple days are.
The breakaway stages are yet to come and I am pretty confident that with Schachmann, Grossschartner, Konrad, Kämna they are going to join some. |

Yeah I know, but it would never be acceptable to put Vlasov in a break move at this point. He's way to big of a threat. Riders like the aforementioned would have been great assets in yesterdays break though.
I'm unsure as to whether people were simply too afraid to help van Aert win, otherwise it seemed like a very good stage for a breakaway with tailwin and up/down for the final 60km.

I think Pogacar actually gave up to the stage win, but then realized that Vingegaard was done and could get past him with one last push.

It's like there are two World Tour riders in the race and everyone else has a wildcard.

Also it looks like Mollema is struggling with ilness with symptoms related to Covid but refuses to take a test (according to the translation, I don’t really understand Dutch that well).

I keep hearing Jonas is going to put time into Pog on the big mountains, Pog always loses time on the big mountains.
His gonna win the first big mountain stage by 5 minutes isn't he? |

You must be talking to a lot of mental asylum patients. Who says that? Pogačar destroyed Jonas on T-A's queen stage

Now Majka and Bennett tested positive as well. But while Bennett is out, Majka stays in the race. Apparently it's all according to protocol, but imagine him riding close to Vingegaard..

Strange that Majka is allowed to stay in, especially when he drills it at the front he endangers both Pogi and Vingegaard to catch it.
