Turner and Sheffield have been riders of the season so far, or at least riders of the Spring Classics Season.

I have to agree I'm liking this new Ineos. But riders of the season?
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Classics Season. They are Neo-Pros dominating the hardest races of the year. Name a bigger ride this year than Magnus Sheffield winning yesterday and the performances Ben Turner has put in so far during the Classics. Turner is riding like a 30 year old Belgian super domestique with 10 years experience.

But, there's like this guy who couldn't do any prep races then finished 3rd in Sanremo on his first race day. Then went on to win Dwars Door Vlaanderen and the Ronde.

Then there's this Tour winner who won Strade Bianchi with 50K solo and destroyed all previous records on the Oude Kwaremont in his first Ronde.

Also this guy who won both Omloop and E3 in an impressive way then unfortunately had to sit a few out with Covid.

I mean, Turner and Sheffield did great so far and I could accept a nomination for surprise riders of the season. But you really want to rank them above Mathieu, Wout and Pogacar?

They are the best riders in the world doing what the best riders in the world do.

We are obviously looking at different interpretations of rider of the year, because i am looking at it from the point of view of riders who have surpassed expectations and done what no-one was expecting them to. In that interpretation Turner and Sheffield have been up there as the best of the season so far.

Obviously if you look only at overall results then (surprise surprise) the best riders in the world are the riders of the year.

Well, then I'd still argue what Bini did was even greater. Not just because of the historic aspect, but he did it in bigger races as well.

Yeah, he's up there.

But Turner is a domestique and riding for his leader and still managed 4th place yesterday and 8th at the Tour of Flanders as a first year pro having ridden all day for Tom Pidcock. He's also ridden solidly at the front in other classic races.

Magnus Sheffield has won exactly the same as Girmay this season. A stage at the Tour of Andalucia and a Semi-Classic. The difference is he's 19, a first year pro and wasn't the teams chosen leader/aprotected rider in either of those races unlike Girmay. He's also not a sprinter so has to rely on shear strength and power to win those type of races.

Sep Vanmarcke out for Roubaix due to illness. This isn't even funny anymore.

Vanmarcke’s bad luck is so off the charts that he would find a way to lose a race that he was riding on his own.

Agree that Biniam Girmay must be the new riders of 2022 so far. Sheffield was a great ride and surprise win, but with the support of two other riders in a small group. It seemed that Girmay was simply the best rider on the day. Also in E3 he was alone still making it 5th. That said it is always hard to judge on one or two good results, it is not unlikely that the Grenadiers might become stars if and when they are allowed to play their own cards. In this case they outnumbered the other teams and the win was relative easy. Well played, but hard to value the individual strength.

ringo182
They outnumbered the other teams because they are 19 and 22 year old Neo Pros dominating seasoned classics riders. They didn't get put into a group with 3 team mates. They rode away from a peloton containing the likes of Alaphilipe, Matthews and Trentin.

Pfft Lets just agree to disagree.
And lets see what results the future brings.

There's a bet for Paris-Roubaix tomorrow if you want to try your luck Smile Gonna try to be a bit more regular with the odds over the next few weeks.

Sadly by now its systematic with Sep and exceeds the notion of just bad luck.

Hate to see Vanmarcke out already but I guess you can’t be heartbroken during the race if he doesn’t start Sad

Matthew Hayman with a NZ flag on the previous winners list, finally it’s our turn to start claiming Aussie icons as our own Pfft

Madness so far in this Paris-Roubaix. Not sure if crosswinds were predicted but INEOS played it really well.
