Not a great opening stage. Van Poppel nowhere in the sprint and Benoot losing time. I had hoped he could play a role in the GC in the first week.

What a start from Kamberaj! I'd hoped he would be a consistent top 5 threat in this field and maybe take a few podiums, but a stage win and the yellow jersey is better than I could have imagined.
Interested to see if he can hang on with the puncheurs tomorrow - if not then hopefully Yates tries to gain some ground. Looking at this field I think a top 5 is possible, but a top 10 would be an acceptable result given pre-season expectations. |

Ridiculous.
Congrats to Farfetch and Project Africa! At least it's great teams benefitting from us.

It feels wrong that a top puncheur gets the first KoM jersey over a brave local hero but it's cool to see Bobridge succesful after nobody wanted him in transfers

Strange stage, but kinda liked it. Too bad Lecuisinier didn't mingle to start scoring some points though.

Please Note: Apologies for some inconsistencies with timing of reports. Have been rather ill the past couple days.
Should return to a normal reporting schedule. |

Again worried that the team of climbers is trying to form a train for Groenewegen. Though in the end it helped to keep him in a good position and luckily he went over behind Houle and the Demare train, which was the perfect position in the end to go around with his dominant final speed.
First stage win of the Tour for him iirc, which means he is having the GT triple now I think having won 2 stages in Giro/Vuelta each before?
Olivier this time in a good position, still annoyed he lost almost 2 minutes on stage 1 but hopefully he can somehow bounce this into good later on as he did so many times in the past. |

Stage 1 was a brilliant start for Houle even if he could have beat Khamberaj, but I was worried going into Stage 2 that his GC position wouldn't make him go for what should have been a great stage win opportunity. I was disappointed to be right but now all that is gone because Hugo Houle is in yellow! Absolutely awesome moment for our first ever GT leader's jersey and at the Tour of all places. Will enjoy however long this lasts and remember it for a long long time. Love that we keep making these memories this year.

Really like to see that we've been in all the breaks so far, and we get a nice reward with Brkic in the youth jersey now! Hopefully he can keep it at least one more day.

Okay Scully does intermediate sprints but none at the end, that is strange...

Ctrl+C Ctrl+V. Strange win but African cycling owns the sport these days.

Weird stage. Half the riders in the top ten have no ground to be top ten on a stage like this... Ingus Demare finishing outside the top ten behind Lecuisinier, Hirt and Kortsidakis? I guess cio is right when he is saying that Isostar is one of the biggest winners of this race so far.
Kinda had to laugh at Tesfom and Tesfaye being top 6 together lol.
Williams and Crnevic lose a lot of time. Hopefully they'll try to use it on the first mountain stages...
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Could have been considered a stage fix here as I guess there must be something wrong with the stage settings seeing all the passiveness.
Anyway, congrats to Africa for the surprise here. |

That was weird. A pity that Omarsson dropped down, don't know if that was intentional or if he just didn't have the legs. Good to get another day in white for Brkic.

Very tempted to sell Demare. Not sure we should've kept this result, this goes even beyond the usual randomness.

Really sucks to see us act like that when we should be almost all in on keeping yellow.

Unfortunate that Olivier is doing a really passive race so far. First losing time and then on a hilly stage, which usually suits him riding just passively inside the peloton. Surely could have fought for bonus seconds here as well.
Really needs to step up later in the race.
Good to see Demare taking this one here after less luck in the sprints. |

I immediately take back pretty much everything I've said so far!!
Two perfectly ridden hilly stages from Demare, that was a joy to watch and a massive improvement from the approach to stage 2. Pretty much exactly how you'd want to ride these.
It's become somewhat of an expectation rather than a big goal to chase, but I have to take a step back and appreciate two stage wins in the biggest race in the world for what they are: a season-defining success!
It'll at best be only two stages in yellow, but we'll enjoy those!
Also good job Hugo Houle for making the fight for yellow and green this intense, I'm looking forward to how things will continue to play out between the two.
