Preview
We’re in Germany for another C2 one day race for the sprinters - at least they hope it will be. But we can’t be sure of that.
The course, with all its hills and especially the long climb up the Feldberg around the halfway point invites the notion that this is not a straightforward spinters classic. And indeed, we’ve seen different outcomes in the two previous (and only) editions of this race. Last year, the sprinters did fight for the win in a bunch sprint from a slightly reduced peloton. Seeing Wouter Wippert, Anthony Lavoine and Rüdiger Selig on the podium tells you everything about how important climbing skills were in that one (not important at all).
But then, two years ago when the race was still C1, the likes of Jonathan Bellis, Hugo Houle and amateur sensation Mirac Kal got the better of the top sprinters with a late attack, showing that especially when the race gets tough, more classics-oriented riders have a shot here as well. So, who will reign surpreme this year? Let’s look at the contenders:
| FL | SP | AC | RS | ST | MO | HI | Vanderbiest | 73 | 81 | 75 | 67 | 72 | 63 | 63 | Avelino | 69 | 81 | 75 | 63 | 67 | 52 | 62 | Nelson | 71 | 80 | 80 | 63 | 69 | 54 | 59 | Kump | 73 | 80 | 79 | 72 | 75 | 65 | 76 | Selig | 71 | 79 | 81 | 68 | 73 | 53 | 65 | Colbrelli | 74 | 79 | 75 | 72 | 74 | 56 | 61 | Ciolek | 71 | 79 | 73 | 63 | 67 | 50 | 62 | Habtom | 75 | 77 | 78 | 75 | 75 | 53 | 61 | Tivani | 70 | 77 | 78 | 78 | 68 | 63 | 66 |
The sprinter field is not as deep as it could be even in a C2 race, with quite a few teams opting to send their fastest guys to the Olympia’s Tour instead. Nonetheless, we have a nice group of sprinters here. Vanderbiest and Avelino are the fastest in terms of pure speed, but neither has the best acceleration anymore, the latter especially showing his age a good bit by now. Crabbe has a strong secondary option in Liepins, though.
Nelson is perhaps best in terms of sprint/acceleration combined, but with his really poor uphill skills and subpar resistance and stamina, he first has to make it to the line at the front. Selig is a fast man as well, but a bit more consistent with his backup stats and he has proven himself here already, as I mentioned.
Hills certainly won’t be an issue for Kump, who will on the contrary hope that the race will be as tough as possible over the first two thirds. He’s accompanied by Redecker, who himself is a decent punchy sprinter. While not as prolific of a puncheur as the former world champion, at least durability is a strength for Colbrelli as well. And Strava, too, have another punchy sprinter on the startlist with Kreder.
Towards the bottom of the list, we have Ciolek, another oldie who has lost quite a bit of his peak acceleration, as well as Habtom and Tivani, who lack the top speed of other competitors but hope to make up for it by great backup stats.
This startlist also would have included Matthews (as would have Juul-Jensen below), but unfortunately, his team did not register enough riders for the race and were thus not allowed to participate.
| FL | SP | AC | RS | ST | MO | HI | Bolor-Erdene | 77 | 64 | 73 | 77 | 71 | 62 | 66 | Habtom | 75 | 77 | 78 | 75 | 75 | 53 | 61 | Naesen | 75 | 77 | 76 | 73 | 77 | 57 | 72 | Stocker | 75 | 76 | 77 | 73 | 71 | 60 | 65 | Cruz | 75 | 68 | 70 | 72 | 68 | 54 | 63 | Calmejane | 74 | 72 | 76 | 76 | 73 | 71 | 77 | Kumara | 74 | 71 | 67 | 70 | 74 | 62 | 67 | Barbero | 74 | 70 | 74 | 72 | 76 | 66 | 75 | Declerq | 74 | 67 | 67 | 71 | 73 | 66 | 73 | Vanspeybrouck | 74 | 65 | 66 | 68 | 75 | 64 | 69 | Kreder | 73 | 77 | 78 | 71 | 75 | 64 | 75 | Redecker | 73 | 77 | 78 | 67 | 74 | 57 | 72 | Stash | 73 | 77 | 77 | 73 | 68 | 56 | 64 | Rathe | 73 | 74 | 76 | 71 | 74 | 63 | 66 | Domene | 73 | 74 | 75 | 68 | 73 | 50 | 57 | Paez | 73 | 73 | 76 | 70 | 74 | 72 | 77 |
It’s always tricky to predict who might be trying his luck late, so this list is pretty extensive. It includes riders who could have, or actually did show up on the sprinters list, such as Habtom, Stocker, Naesen, Kreder, Redecker and Stash, as well as puncheurs like Calmejane, Barbero and Paez, and just flat engines with big motors like Bolor-Erdene and cobbles grandmaster Vanspeybrouck. Can one of them surprise the field? Will someone else entirely end up victorious?
Lots of questions for this one. If you think you have answers, have a look at this bet and turn your expertise into a profit!

T3A is here! One of our C2 outings. XP gains only, maybe a breakaway appearance. Just getting more learning and miles into the legs of our future stars.
Rooting for former T3A rider Nelson, , but this should be a good win for Kump.

This is definitely one of the more unpredictable races out there. Late attacks should occur, but can they win the race? Also how big the early breakaway is could influence how fast the peloton has to go over the hills and how many riders get dropped.
I thought a lot about coming here, but in the end I took a different race to use up all 175 RDs. Nice preview

Looking at the profile it is hard to see Nelson make it to the bunch sprint but as the preview says last year was s sprinters' battle. In any case even in a sprint he is limited. If he can get there and get a top 10 I'll be pleased.
I hope his presence doesn't stop us attacking with other riders

I'm really hoping this is ridden hard, as it could be, for Paez to succeed here. We shall see if the gamble pays off. Honestly rate a breakaway here though given the number of teams so hopefully we're involved in that.

Thanks for the preview, obviously praying that this is a Kump win, but wouldnt be surprised to see De Vos as our best placed rider and a win for Calmejane.

Here purely for the experience, but seeing as how the startlist isn’t quite as strong as I thought it would be If Nur Hasan actually has good form he might actually be part of the sprint. And Bolor-Erdene has been such a workhorse for us, he could totally wheel away at the end because he’s surprisingly strong. I just hope we can at least beat Vanderbiest here, oh please god!
Thanks for the lovely preview

Really looking forward to this race. Interesting to see how large a group can make it to the finish.

Think Kump is the best bet here, he is competitive as a pure sprinter and as the punchy rider. That said pleased with the field and if we ride for Tivani I think he could be competitive. Not sure this merited two of Boswell's race days but Tivani can't say we didn't support him. Given those two it is odd, and worrying, that Rathe got the number 1 bib.

Cool to have a wager on this one. I put my money on Calmejane this time, simply cause he rode for us two seasons ago
Will be a interresting race, hope to be competitive here and fight for a top 10. |

On paper it's gotta be Kump, but Calmejane seems to have a really good skillset to attack here if he wants.

Thank you HelloFresh!
I might have been a bit too generous with those odds

Very unusual Podium there in the end. Kump unsurprisingly winning it but how Vanderbiest held on is beyond belief However I’m very pleased to see Paez take 3rd despite his late attack attempts so this is a good result for us!
Mas 8th, Fernandez 12th and Borisavljevic 16th rewarding our depth we sent here and good to see the team work together to create the splits to drop as many sprinters as possible.
Thank you for the report! A very good one indeed!
And congrats to HelloFresh, even if it pains me from an Overall point of view

Two riders in the break, 3 in the Top20. Not bad for a bunch of Stagieres and Neo-Pros who had no real business in a race that tough.
It was a very good win for Kump, highly impressive.

Awesome win for Kump! Congrats! Wibisono and Yudha doing so well is awesome to see, good signs for the future. Pretty brutal race considering the flat rating, and an awesome report to boot!

Didn't expect that Vanderbiest would hold on
