Tour of Chile - Discussion

Tour of Chile - Preview

It's mid-May and the focus of much of the Cycling World is on Spain for La Vuelta but for 24 teams in the Pro-Continental and Continental Divisions, their attention will be on South America where their riders are lining up for the C1 Tour of Chile.

The Tour of Chile is, itself, relatively new to the Cycling World as we have only had one edition in the past which was last year. The race was won by Magnus Cort Nielsen who is a well rounded Climber that managed to win Stage 2 and finish 2nd on Stage 3.

The first of our 3 days in Chile should favour the Sprinters so there will no doubt be a few riders here targeting the first leaders jersey. The 2nd and 3rd stages are where the GC will be decided. The interesting aspect being that the 2nd stage is built for those who enjoy the short, sharp climbs while the final stage is definitely more suited to those that thrive on the long, tough climbs.

GC Favourites

There are a number of world class riders here who would be considered favourites. The man at the top of the list is one of them. He hasn't had the best season so this is the opportunity for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana to turn it around and show what he's capable of. He is the best pure climber here and he should limit his losses on Stage 2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/akm.png Galta is a similar rider and will likely need to gain time on the final stage to counter any losses in the hills.
Next we have a quartet of strong climbers who are also very capable in the hills. These riders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Monsalve, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Spilak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun. All of these 4 have a strong history in our sport and will be keen to add another GC victory to their collection.
Another rider we need to point out is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Latour. The Frenchman is one of the most aggressive climbers in the Peloton and has the energy to back up his attacks. He will be one to watch here.
Finally, we have to highlight the presence of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Beltran. The Colombian will be the GC rider to focus on during Stage 2 and could put some gaps into this rivals that he can take into the final stage.

Pure Climbers

The trio of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Henao Montoya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Carapaz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Amador have been separated from the main GC favourites due to their lack of ability in the Hills. However, they are all very capable climbers and, if they can limit time losses on Stage 2, could all be in for a great GC result.

Puncheurs

The next set of riders will have their eyes fixed on the 2nd stage and the opportunity to take both a stage win and the GC lead going into the final stage. There is also a trio of riders here that will have overall GC ambitions as well. Those riders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Paulinho, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Slagter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Chaves. All three are very strong in the Hills and decent climbers as well. Slagter the most likely to have a GC shot as he has Team leadership whereas the other 2 may have to work for the Climbers in their respective teams.

Sprinters

Given there is only 1 stage for the Sprinters, we don't have the best in the PCT or CT divisions but there are certainly some strong contenders here for the first Leaders Jersey of the race.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Manninen is the stand-out here but he doesn't have any support here so it will be interesting to see how his team approaches the opening stage.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Kump is the other top favourite here and he could even hold the GC lead in Stage 2 as he is more than capable on the hills too. Unlike Manninen, he has the support of Redecker who should be a strong lead-out man and himself finished 2nd on Stage 1 last year.
There are of course a number of other strong sprinters here but it is hard to know who will be the best on tomorrows stage. It is worth noting that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Coutinho did win Stage 1 of this race last season so he knows what it's like to win here in Chile.

Warchol’s first race this season after his off-season training. Dunbar and Arifin both here too so we have a very strong squad. Dunbar did really well on the hilly stage in Romandie, so it will be interesting to see what the game makes of him and Warchol’s differing abilities. Probably means they’ll both finish outside the top-20 knowing my luck

Need to aim big here and hope for a podium. Suryadi should have a good crack at the first stage as well so this is a race we can score points for sure.

Thanks for the preview!

Sent Kumpi here with a hope for a "free" green jersey, which he hopefully should get with two good placements on stage 1-2, thanks for the preview! Hard to say how we'll fair in the GC, but if Elissonde pulls off a blinder on stage three this could be a really awesome race for us!

Risky race for us, but I felt it was a risk worth taking. We need Beltran to win stage 2 in order to stand a chance against the superior climbers.

Manninen with a lot of weight on his shoulders as best sprinter here, it will be interesting to see whether he can deliver. Spilak should also be a good rider for this profile, and a top-5 is the minimum I hope for. Wouldn't mind him attacking with Beltran like they did in Hong Kong. This time I'd prefer him to hold on to the Colombian's wheel though Pfft

Penasa a bit higher up the favourites' list here. Hope he lives up to it and we can improve from Romandie.

Having Romandie fresh in our minds, I must admit I'm not that hopeful for Galta. Kind of worried to not see Amezawa mentioned. I really, really, really hope he gets to ride his chance on the hilly stage. If so, he could very well be our GC guy here.

Think I fancy this to be a battle between Guldhammer and Beltran, while I also rate Padun's and Monsalve's chances.

baseballlover312
More C1 race days for Guldhammer. Not great planning by me I guess, but it seemed to make sense at the time. Here it's only 3 race days, so low risk compared to the GC points available I suppose.

Obviously I have pretty high expectation for Rasmus here. This race suits him about as good as any, with a hilly stage followed by a mountain stage with a flat finish. Anything can happen day to day, but it definitely fits his skillset on paper. He's got Aranburu to back him up, who should also be very well suited to the course.

Biggest favorites for me are Beltran, Monsalve, and Padun, but it really all depends on if there are any gaps at all after the hill stage. Not a lot of places to make a difference here, so it could go to any second tier climber in the end if it's not selective.

Thanks for the preview!

A lot of competition here. Boivin has shown good form so far and I'm hoping he'll put up a fight on the first stage. As much as I hoped, Chaves hasn't worked for my team as I was expecting him to do. But maybe he has a chance to redeem himself on the second stage. And although there's a tough and crowded field for the GC I am keeping my fingers crossed and my hopes high for the best final position possible.

Thank you for the preview and good luck everyone!

A five men break on an easy profile and a rather short stage on the first day, holding off the peloton that easily. That's a bit stupid imo. And of course Manninen wins the sprint of the peloton again Pfft

Understand the frustration. My observation was that the GC teams weren’t too fussed in terms of the chase which left very few teams remaining that actually took much of an interest. Those teams that did just didn’t have the strength and depth (of sprint focussed riders) to do so.

Seems like only Manninen's and Kump's teams chased and that wasn't enough. Usually there is a third team, but not always. The fact 80 HI riders are allowed in the breakaway is a different issue Pfft

A breakaway win on a first stage?? Not sure when I last saw that happen, if ever! Although, given that it is so rare, I kinda like that it is actually possible. Then again, swap Manninen for Silvestre and I can't guarantee I feel the same way Pfft
