It's a new year and we're still using the old thread. We used to do this every month, and I refuse to let us fall so hard that we keep the same thread for multiple years! In any case, the new season is starting soon, so news should pick up a bit.
As is kind of tradition, I don't really have any news, per se. MacC posted a good article in the old thread earlier about Sam Bennett's racing program (MSR, TDF, Worlds), which we could talk about here, or finish in the old thread.
There is this too:

Not really news I guess, but it just made me think of how far Lotto have fallen. They've been a WT staple for so long, with consistent sponsorship, that I didn't even consider the possibility that their WT license might be in jeopardy, but it makes sense. They've been consistently bad the last few years in terms of the UCI rankings and results. The only real winner they have now is Ewan, so they will continue to lean on him hard to perform.

Yeah it's kinda sad how it's going. Of course, less budget each year hurts the team and makes it impossible to continue the way they were doing. With both Alpecin and Wanty upping their budget, it's really hard for them to get the Belgian talents they're famous for.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Unconfirmed reports saying Bernal broke his patellae and femur. First half of the season probably gone. |

Any word on whether it was a vehicle related collision or just a standard crash? Lately it seems most training accidents are with cars, but the team camp angle sound more like it wasn't.

I hate this type of news and really hope to see as few as possible of such events.
Also, quite worrisome the spike in COVID cases around cycling. I do hope the race calendar is not affected too much. Although sport takes a step back in face of normal life taking its rightful place and I can say I am sick and tired of this virus affecting everything around it. |

Possibly add Nibali, Froome and Cavendish to that list.
Bit of an end of an era.

Continuing on the Lotto thing, all the teams involved seem to realize they really have to score indeed. Lotto has done quite well with several wins, but their competitors Arkea and Cofidis have also scored some nice points already with multiple victories. Uno-X, who's next in line, is clearly doing well too. But the points difference they have to bridge should be too much.
Don't know yet what Alpecin will do. If they decide to stay in PRT, two out of the first three mentioned teams should go to/stay in WT. Of course there could also be a team that has to drop out because of money reasons/sth else. But yeah, not looking too bright for Lotto atm, as they have some ground to make up for as well.

Stuyven out of Milano-San Remo due to sickness. Mads Pedersen replaces him. Should be an outside bet, flying form and climbing better this year. |

I hope Van der Poel can isolate from illness and indeed start the race on Saturday. Because now it is Caleb Ewan who is forced to miss Sanremo due to a stomach problem. :/ |

Looks like I need to redraft my fantasy classics team tonight then.

Apparently, he's conscious and talking on his way to the hospital. Hopefully he's okay. Scary stuff!

Egan Bernal is back on his bike.
Do you think he has a realistic chance of making it back to the top level? I guess Marco Pantani and Greg Lemond are two examples of how a rider can come back from near career ending injuries to get back to the very top.
