ringo182
Just thought I'd set this thread up for the new season seeing as the Vuelta a Mallorca starts on Wednesday, signalling the start of the new racing season in Europe.

Other races to look forward to in February include:

Tour of Valencia - 2nd to 6th
Ruta del Sol - 16th to 20th
UAE Tour - 20th to 26th
Omloop Het Nieuwsblad - 26th
Kuurne - Brussels - Kuurne - 27th

Hmm, I want to do my fantasy cycling game again, but I don't want to see too many cancelled races.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Great to see the season starting on TV (or the Internet in this instance). I know that New Zealand and Tachira were first, but it was good to see live Clàssica Comunitat Valenciana. And although it was marred by 2 crashes around the finish it was an entertaining one. Or I missed cycling races too much. Smile

UAE already starting with a bang. 1-2 in the first Mallorcan race, McNulty’s maiden win with the team and Joel Suter (!!) second. Damn. Could well be McNulty’s breakthrough year, hopefully.

Bit of a weird set up in Mallorca. Is it in effect 5 individual single day races, so the teams can change their riders from one day to the next, but an overall winner will be declared at the end based on performances during the week?

What are the odds on Valverde being declared overall winner for some tenuous reason

Oh well, at least it's a bit of cycling to watch and we can get used to some of the new kits to look out for this season.

It's not a stage race, there's no GC or anything. Riders only score points for the 5 individual 1.1 races.

I do recall a winner being declared many many years ago, but that was before the days teams just flew in riders all over the place and they did all 5 races with the same team.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

According to Wikipedia (the totally legitimate answer to everything Smile) they say this about the overall GC

"Although the race styles itself as the "Tour of Majorca" it has never been allowed to be classed as a multi day stage race by the sports governing body the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) because the race rules allows riders not to participate on certain days if they don’t want to. However, there is an unofficial overall classification winner taken on total time over five days."

Guess this was the overall GC award they were talking about on the Eurosport highlights last night that lead to my confusion Smile

Jimmy Whelan really wants to get back to WT it seems. Impressive at the Down Under NCs, now winning solo at the Santos Cycling Festival, what a rider that is.

Could have been a good fit at Lotto this year. I don’t think he has shown all his true potential, but hopefully these performances are enough to earn him a better contract. Smile

And seeing that Richie Porte hasn’t conquered Willunga Hill one last time is the sign of the times. Pfft

I'd have liked him further at EF. But I can imagine him having trouble to adjust to riding in the roughs of a peloton with the big bodies, especially not coming from a full cycling background.

WTF Valverde is still winning races

DarkWolf
So, Dylan Groenewegen and Fabio Jakobsen won a stage on the same day. I find that to be, well... interesting.

Vuelta al Guadalentín kicks off the Spanish amateur season, which I always love to follow. It does so in spectacular fashion, with the first stage, this year a TT prologue, finishing at Castillo de Aguilas.

The final 4-500 meters have a gradient of 15% in places, so it makes for a tough finish.

During the stage there was a brave soul who ended the stage with the chain broken. Hats of to him.

Kaden Hopkins, the young Bermudan, finished 2nd and he shows excellent improvement since last season. I believe TheManxMissile will be thrilled to see him in the MG game next year (although I'm tempted to challenge his signing Wink).

Next to stages are great too, with finishes at Fortaleza del Sol de Lorca and Observatorio de Cabezo de la Jara, 3rd and 1st category climbs.

So great to see Carlos Rodriguez and Tobias Halland Johannessen on the spotlight amid the pros after their incredible performance last Summer on the Tour de l’Avenir. Definitely two gems here. Smile

I thought Juan Ayuso looked good on the climb to Antenas del Maigmó. Then I was left wondering how he lost over 3 minutes to the finish, only to find that he had a mechanical problem on the sterrato. That debate about sterrato has plenty of ramifications, but from my point of view I am torn between the view points. It's certainly fun to watch, but I perfectly understand the opinion of the riders contesting it.

Nairo Quintana won Tour de la Provence ahead of Julian Alaphilippe and Mattias Skjelmose. The final mountain stage was won by Quintana with 37 sec. To Skjeldmose 2nd and Matteo Jorgenson 3rd.

Other stage winners was: Filippo Ganna (pro), Elia Viviani, Bryan Coquard.

Ganna was mightily impressive. I also really enjoyed Gebre doing well!

Being a Dane seeing Skelmose perform this well is nice. I knew he is quite good, but this is clearly his best race to date.

I can understand, also nice to see some young Belgians doing well so far. Van Gils winning the Saudi Tour, De Lie winning the Trofeo Palma, Vandenabeele and Van Wilder doing nice in Provence and Oman GC, etc.

Speaking about young Danes, nice win by Hindsgaul as well in Antalya. UNO-X already with five wins as well so far, not bad at all.

Ya all in all good too see some of the young riders doing well. Besides those already mentioned also Matteo Jorgenson (USA) did great in Provence. Anthon Charmig (Den) and Mauro Schmid (Switz) did well in Oman
