Lisbon Classic - Preview
We head to Portugal for the C1 Lisbon Classic. We should have a pretty good selection of the top Puncheurs from across the PCT and CT Divisions gathered here to fight for the race win.
From the Race Profile, you would expect it goes to the Puncheurs which has been the case both in 2020 and 2019. Meyer's win last season was courtesy of some aggressive riding in which he won by more than a minute in the end. Bellis in 2019 had the most energy in the sprint from a group of 22 riders.
| 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 2020 | Travis Meyer | Kuznetsov | Vanspeybrouck | 2019 | Bellis | Debesay | Cerny |
We first look at those riders who are strongest in the Hills but will need to ride the race hard and likely look to win with solo attacks or from a much smaller group. The 2 top guys stand out here in the form of Skujins and EBH. They both have a decent kick too. It wouldn't be too much of a surprise to see them attack late and finish 1-2.
McCarthy and Di Maggio will have to attack as they won't be winning too many reduced group sprints.
Of the other 4, Bystrom has the most strength and loves an attack so he may be eyeing up some late solo efforts. Bilbao may back himself in a reduced group sprint against those stronger than him so he might wait it out until the end. Gautier and Palini both have team leaders that would prefer a group sprint so I would expect them to be fairly passive.
| | | HIL | STA | SPR | ACC | FTR | | Toms | Skujins | 83 | 80 | 68 | 76 | 66 | | Edvald Boasson | Hagen | 83 | 78 | 71 | 76 | 73 | | Jay | McCarthy | 81 | 80 | 65 | 74 | 71 | | Cesare | Di Maggio | 81 | 72 | 64 | 74 | 66 | | Sven Erik | Bystrom | 79 | 75 | 68 | 76 | 78 | | Pello | Bilbao | 79 | 77 | 71 | 75 | 67 | | Cyril | Gautier | 78 | 73 | 66 | 74 | 75 | | Andrea | Palini | 78 | 75 | 68 | 74 | 69 |
You would expect the following riders to try to hold onto the lead group and wait it out for the final kilometers as they are the fastest sprinters of those hill specialists on the start line in Lisbon. Hard to look away from Van Stayen although the CT has 2 very strong representatives here in Kump and Tsatevich who have both had success this season already.

I definitely wouldn't want to be a betting man on this one as it's a very hard one to call. Will late attacks prevail or will we have a reduced sprint? |

I'll be honest, I didn't look at previous results and just trusted the flat icon, so I sent Stallaert here likely not a great idea, though maybe he gets recognized as a classics rider and actually stays close to the front, Vanspeybrouck's third place is encouraging in that way, though he is a far surperior puncheur. Could have been a nice profile for Vendrame, but he's not been terribly convincing so far this season.
Hagen or Kump to win it I feel like, but this type of course is one of the more open ones, so who knows. Looking forward to the race, thanks for the preview!

Since the team in Veenendaal was complete and utter sh*t in front of me, hopefully the secondary team in Lisbon will be better. Kalaba will definitely be there in a sprint, but hopefully EBH pulls a Meyer.

It still says it's a flat race, so I hope my complement of flat riders like Katrasnik, Poljanec and Antonijevic get a chance Le Gac and Blikra could be options as puncheurs, but maybe I should've sent Gaudu here also?
Hoping for a good result either way, thanks for the preview

Same
Anyway, if the whole peloton stays together, Maksimov is free to surprise me. Although I doubt that will happen. Also don't think Mutsumine's 77 hill is high enough for the AI to think of him as a serious contender for a win/good result.
Thanks for the preview!

Ok this startlist is a lot stronger than I expected, will be happy if Kump even kisses top 10 here

Im glad we stayed away, strongly considered sending Eiking here.
Good luck everybody - My guess is a Van Stayen mass sprint finish

Excited to see Ballerini here. He has struggled so far this season, not being good enough to be a leader, but also not finding those depth points I expected him to find. This should be a holden opportunity, though, as the profile should fit his characteristics.
Also hoping to see us represented in the breakaway, as we shouldn’t have anyone here «qualifying» for a typical leader role. Hopefully those present make the most of it, there’s everything to win and nothing to loose |

A chance for the Kraftwerk hills squad to atone for Poland.
Thanks for the preview LLS.

Pretty shocked that the startlist is not so strong given how stacked PCT hills are this year. I guess the true puncheurs fear the flat finish would give them enough space to fight off the sprinters.

Hoping for Kump or Calmejane but this could be anybodys race. I expect a late attack to succeed here, or a punchy sprinter like van Stayen to take home the bacon.

Think we have a solid team for this event for once - with R. Oliveira, H. McCormick and Van der Sande. Should be good enough for a top10 I hope, but this is always a shot in the dark.
Thanks for the preview, LLS!

How did we get a sprint here? Well, congrats Pollos!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Ugh, we had Katrasnik, Antonijevic and Groselj all near the front and none of them tried to attack
At least we scored a few points and I guess we were due a bad race
Congrats Nemo, two great days of sprinting for you
Thanks for the report LLS

Wow, so we did get a sprint after all! Bit of a surprise, but a welcome one for us. Surprising that someone like Maksimov, with his terrible uphill and subpar stamina and res stats was able to win in, but I'm happy for Nemo that he's stepping up. It's a bit unfortunate that Stallaert was apparently positioned so poorly going into the sprint, but 9th is still more than I had expected pre-race, so we're good. Also, nice of Khederi to show up in the breakaway! Always a pleasure to see that.
Thanks for the report LLS, you made the most out of this somewhat unspectacular course of events!

I must admit, that I was surprised that there weren`t more sprints in the past. Just 2-3 real sprints in the results. So half the events were going to late attacks or punchy sprints.
From mind, I had expected a kind of Paris Tours history but was apparently wrong.
Surprised to see the weaker performance by Kump on such finish though.
Congrats to the winner though. Maksimov barely wins but always from time to time. |

The race not entertaining enough for Hagen and Kalaba cannot finish it in the sprint. April 28th has been a horrible day for the Minions.
Congrats Nemolito and thanks LLS!

Yeah I won't lie. I was waiting for attacks on the hills near the end and nothing came and then I saw all the sprinters come forward to the front and thought "so we're getting a sprint from guys who can barely go over a speed bump"
