Welcome to the 9th edition of the Gisborne GP one day race. It looks like a bog standard hilly race, but at 225 km it certainly stands out among the CT races. The first 2/3 of the race are relatively easy, but the last third will challenge the riders with lots of ups and downs. The last three climbs are the longest and hardest, but the very finish is flatter. While the terrain is somewhat suited to a longer range attack, an uphill sprint is the more likely outcome. A strong kick in the end could prove vital.
With that said let's look at some of the favourites:
| FL | MO | HI | ST | RS | AC | Eiking | 71 | 69 | 80 | 78 | 74 | 76 | Juul-Jensen | 73 | 70 | 78 | 76 | 74 | 79 | Boswell | 70 | 71 | 80 | 77 | 73 | 76 |
Eiking has ascended now to the position of the top puncheur in CT. He has terrific stamina and a very good kick to finish of a race. An even punchier rider though is Juul-Jensen. The Dane doesn't lack much in other areas and should be a great rival to Eiking this year also. The new addition to CT is Boswell riding for McCormick. The American will duke it out with the two vikings here and across the season. Not much to choose between these three riders, all can be worthy winners here.
| FL | MO | HI | ST | RS | AC | Meyer | 74 | 69 | 79 | 74 | 71 | 77 | Bystrom | 72 | 68 | 79 | 75 | 72 | 76 | Calmejane | 74 | 71 | 77 | 73 | 76 | 76 | Edmondson | 70 | 69 | 79 | 75 | 72 | 76 |
Tier II is not far behind the front three. Meyer is as punchy as it gets with a lower stamina as his potential weak point on a long course like this. Bystrom has a bit better stamina, but is a bit worse climber. He is flanked by teammate and super domestique Calmejane as one of the strongest allround puncheurs here. He's an excellent backup option if Bystrom has an off day. Finally we have a well known commodity in Edmondson who is riding for the home team of BNZ. Another rider with a big punch the could be dangerous in a final sprint to the line.
| FL | MO | HI | ST | RS | AC | Chaves | 70 | 76 | 79 | 74 | 73 | 72 | Felline | 68 | 66 | 77 | 75 | 73 | 78 | Paez | 73 | 72 | 77 | 74 | 70 | 76 | Tsatevich | 74 | 62 | 77 | 74 | 73 | 75 | Watson | 70 | 65 | 78 | 76 | 72 | 72 | Palini | 69 | 70 | 78 | 75 | 68 | 74 |
Last we have Tier III which is very strong as well. Former race winner Chaves starts us off. He lacks that explosive kick and his stamina is not great, but he's by far the best climber here. Maybe attacking from further out is his best chance? Felline is the opposite as he can't climb as well and is overall not as strong, but his acceleration is fantastic. Paez brings a very solid skillset to the table and should be a safe bet for a good result. We will see if this race is too hard for Tsatevich, but if he can hold on then he can finish strong. Watson will be super domestique for Edmondson after doing the same job for Kelderman last year. Finishing off the list is Palini who is overall not amongst the strongest, but maybe he and Felline can attack this race as slight underdogs.

Pretty close startlist without a real favourite and even tier 2 or 3 isn't really much weaker.
Wonder if Chaves as only real hybrid will have some advantage. His hill alone also is rather top class. Would be my bet actually. |

If Paez is there at the end, which he could well be, then he should be able to fight for the win. Would be good to get our season off to the best start possible!

Thanks for the preview. I don't expect anything from the guys who have been sent to this race but a top 25 would be nice, it's very odd not to expect some sort of result in a hills race for once.
I think Roturn might be right regarding Chaves but we will see should be a really good race when you realize how stacked this field is!

Really excited for the season opener for Tafjord!
We're sending a decent team, and hope to gain our first points here, but a top 10 seems unlikely with this field.
Cool to see former riders Meyer and Calmejane up with the favorites.
Thank you very much for the preview redordead! |

Landmark race for McCormick with Boswell's debut in our jersey. Also marks the first time we have ever been competitive in a hilly race. Hopefully it rides hilly and Chaves' MT doesn't play a big part. Also worried about Boswell suffering from his lack of support in this long race.
Thanks for the preview, excited to get the season underway.

I'm really interested in how both my leaders Clemanje and Bystrom can cooperate to and get a good result. I really hope that I didn't do any mistake and that the will find a chemistry together
Thanks Redordead for preview

The first race in our young history. I'm really excited and I'm looking forward to get things rolling, it appears it would be an interesting one. We're hoping for a good result here to kickstart the season in the best way possible and we rely on Chaves' experience for that, as he won the race 2 seasons ago. We're hoping he can repeat that result.
Thank you redordead for the preview and have a great race everyone! |

From my HQ thread :
A debut for Dan Martin in the hilly classic but Nathan Haas is probably better suited to taking some points here.
Michael O’Loughlin will also make his debut.
Target: Top 10
....actually I think a top 20 would be a good result! Definitely our weakest terrain. Good luck to all especially the new teams

Such a close race, even with Eiking and Boswell present. Would love to see the 1-2 of BNZ do well here

Loved the aggression from JJ, just classic, though I wonder if Favilli could have been better used in the final stretch. 5th is still a great result though!

Happy with that, just came down to who was having the best day among the final 5 and it wasn't Boswell. But rode the race smart, Siegle stepped in when needed, Revard covered the break and Boswell didn't go crazy like some others.
Given the winner MO clearly didn't matter, I wonder if PCM20 gives HI a little more credit.
Congrats to Laurens and Crabbe on the best possible start to their project.
And thanks for a great report.

Tsateviiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiich
What a way to start for a new team. Going to the front at the steepest section and then just powering through from the front is a show of strength. Told you he would be a fantastic signing for you - Congrats Laurens!
RIP Chaves, whatever that was. Scares me a ton!
