Little side-project i've been working on for a few days just purely out of interest. I was looking through the new Teams & Managers List and just wondered for the thousandth time, why do managers pick these sponsors? Which got me thinking, why do some managers change each year and others almost never? And then, apart from good stats why do managers chase certain riders? Why do we view certain riders with a cult hero status, and not others?
So i started putting together some of these questions in much easier formats to make The Great Big MG Survey. Let's try and dive into the mindset behind the game even if we all end up realising we're collectively insane.
My second step in this, first was getting the idea as above, i wanted to give the community a chance to pose their own questions!
Is there something about the MG and it's managers you've always wanted to find out? You can make any suggestions below, or in PM to me if you're embarrassed
You won't see the survey for probably a week or more, just so i can work on it to make sure it's as good as possible.
I'm hoping it'll be quite interesting , and that we might find some areas for follow-up surveys going forwards.
As well your own question ideas, please drop any other ideas, feedback or suggestion below or in PM. Hoping there's at least one person as curious into other managers minds and decisions as i am.

Q: How often do you consider your riders to have actual feelings?
1) Never? You're weird!
2) It happens on occasion
3) I often need to remind myself they're not real
4) WELL THEY DO
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

I have often found myself wondering why some managers seem to be content with status quo. This is probably mosty related to certains teams of the lower rankings, where it seems as if result-ambitions are out of the question. What motivates teams like Eddie Stobart, Glanbia and to some degree McCormick (also including certain other teams of the past) to play the game, if they don't play actively to promote?
Being a team with a HEAVY focus on Greek cycling I fully understand why some might want to perform within some regional focusses, and then having to accept the consequenses - but in some cases teams have been filled with riders not capable of EVER performing within the Man-Game. This is both maxed and unmaxed riders which falls into this category.
I have the utmost respect for managers who play this game regardless of ambitions, but it just falls so far off my own perspectives to play at lower level and be OK with that year after year - No short term plan, no long term plan. Just playing.

@quadsas & ollfardh - I'll see if those questions make the cut
@SotD - That's a bit of what i want to try and learn and quantify. How many managers want to win, how many want to RP, how strongly do some managers value real world recognition.
And yes i have questions on approach as well, to cover the nerdy end who dive into numbers and plans (such as yourself & cio) and to cover the more see what happens (such as myself or sutty). Not at all to get a "which is best" but just to find out what the distributions are and learn some of the reasoning

*quietly closes DB file named "2025 Transfer Plans"* ...
This indeed would be what most intrigues me as well.
I'd imagine the time factor plays a significant role in that, and I am the first to admit that it's just as much of a valid strategy to approach the chaos of transfers with a chaotic preparation!

I suggest you wait until after transfers/planning because people might be busy ... |

You seem to neglect the fact that maybe I am just very bad at the game! Although I would have been promoted this season (my 2nd) if I had scored as many points as I had in my first. So I am trying
Moreover though even when I play PCM or Football manger I am happy to start at the very bottom and normally not get much higher but it's all relative. A victory in any race for me is a big deal

@Cio - I expect time is the big factor, but we don't know for sure. Could be that we have managers with time, but that just don't care that much Equally in that area of transfers planning i am also working on a few questions to see how often people stick to a Plan A, or what other strategies they work with.
@Knockout - Hence the week+ delay before anything gets finalised. My hope is to launch it during transfers week 2 when interest and site engagement is still high, but with more chances to complete the questions. Equally there's no rush on it either, and this is very much a long term thought to try and get as close to 100% participation as possible. Which probably means you won't get results until we're a few months into the season.
@MacC - Don't spoil the answers
Maybe in Big Survey 2 there'll be comparisons to how people play PCM or FM or other games.

Like Said, it wasn’t meant as a disrespect at all. I understand that not everyone Can be great at everything. That said it does Seem pretty straight forward to copy what others do if it is very important to develop.
I have stolen ideas and paths from others over and over again, until I was finally able to spot some loopholes myself. I am very analytical in my approach and that takes time. Time I fully recognize others don’t have/wish to spend.
I don’t see you as a poor manager for not promoting btw. But I also think you are 100% focused on performance. Am I right?

This will be interesting!
I am probably more in the camp of 'relaxed' managers not sinking too much time into things, also due to circumstances, although I do try to pursue some level of success. The main base of the team however is based on something most teams seem to be lacking a bit imo, a proper academy for both leaders such as Padun and Prevar, but also classy domestiques mostly from the region such as Budyak, Golovash and Nitu. In fact 18 of my current 24 riders have been at my team in unmaxed form, Which is a ratio I would love to maintain in the coming seasons, whilst also staying as region focused as I am currently.
Perhaps this approach wont ever get me back up into the PT, but at least it is a way for me to have some fun

The Great Big MG Survey is still planned. As mentioned above it was planned to come at earliest late this week, although i can confirm this is not happening. More likely to appear late next week once we're clear of all the remaining off season tasks (minus those managers who agonise over planning for an age).
I am still taking suggestions for specific questions, or general topic areas you want to know more about!
As above there'll be a look at Role Play vs Power Play. A look at time commitments. A look at Long term vs short term. Questions on why certain sponsors and riders are chosen. And more!
So if you have a burning desire to know more about the managers views and desires please let me know

The MG Pilot Survey is now live! You can submit answers and help contribute to this first step in gaining a deeper understanding of our wonderful little game.
You can skip any questions. Be as long or as short as you want. And please give me any feedback!
This is a short starting survey. From this i hope to see some patterns and points to further explore going forwards. So please offer something. And lets see what happens.

You have my response - fair to say that at different points in time, my answers to some of the questions would have been quite different.
