Madrazo will not get as many points next year as this year, compare the values with Morton or Dombrowski
(Madrazo has better time trial)

Thomas De Gendt
Jacques Janse van Rensburg

:: Goals

Top 3 in PT - fail (6th)

Top 3 in GP Liechtenstein - fail (8th)
Top 10 in Paris - Roubaix - success (9th)

:: Key Riders

Kamil Malecki (24) • Captivated the entire cycling world with a magical Giro performance. The breakaways that earned him the pink jersey were impressive, but it was his doomed struggle to keep it that turned the young Pole into one of the stars of the 2020 season.
73 FL, 71 MO, 74 HI, 74 ACC
1061 points - 200k wage
Angel Madrazo (32) • Got close to sealing a legendary third Tour de France win, but was denied by the exceptionally strong Silvio Herklotz. Overall a decent season for our leader.
85 MO, 77 TT
1434 points - 1050k wage
Davide Formolo (28) • Couldn't fully meet the expectations that came with his latest training, but still managed to score a respectable amount of points for the team.
79 MO, 79 HI
612 points - 260k wage
Tanel Kangert (33) • Like Bibby last year, Kangert proved that decline is not the end of the world. Great point scoring for a 33 year old on 110k.
74 FL, 74 MO, 76 HI, 76 TT
423 points - 110k wage
Tao Geoghegan Hart (25) • Tao didn't have any standout performances, but his consistently solid form allowed him to take home way more points than we expected from this unmaxed rider. Looking forward to see what he can do in 2021.
76 MO, 74 TT
328 points - 170k wage

2021 Wages and Availability

Ian Bibby has officially left Gazelle during the '20/'21 off-season. Since 2017 Ian has contributed greatly to the team and together with Kangert he was the engine of our TTT. As a **** popularity rider he has entered the Gazelle hall of fame.
Also Fejes, Boaro and Vysna did not receive a contract offer.

After a relatively uneventful renewal process we'll enter the upcoming transfer period with 19 riders and 450k free wage budget.

Despite the fact that he is still one of the top stage racers in the world, Angel Madrazo might leave the team if the right offer comes along. The team prefers a swap with a weaker but also younger rider. Madrazo did accept a significant wage reduction, so if an interesting offer doesn't materialize we are happy to support him for another season.

How much weaker? Pfft

More seriously, I might get in touch with you for one of the "maybe" riders. The pure puncheurs are a bit less interesting, as I've got enough of them Pfft

Depends on how much I like the rider and how much younger he is. Wink

That's cool, we'll speak soon.

2022 Departures

We did however say farewell to a trio of aging icons. All of them have been inducted into the Gazelle Hall of Fame.

Steven Kruijswijk •  Breakaways
With his extraordinary mix of 78 FL, 76 MO and 79 FTR, Steven managed to turn an absurd amount of breakaways into success. He perfected this craft in 2019 and his contribution of 642 points on a 135k wage was one of the cornerstones of our PT win.

Tanel Kangert •  All-round stage racer
After signing him in 2015, Kangert appeared in our yearly list of key riders no less than five times. Flat, mountains, hills and time-trials; Tanel was a machine in all of them.

Blaž Furdi • Puncheur
With the team from 2013 all the way until 2022. Blaž made the transition from CT leader to PT domestique perfectly.

2022 Availability

We'd love to do a bit of a rebuild and to make space for that, Madrazo has to go.

Nat.NameFLMOHITTSTRSRCCBSPACFGDHPRAge Popula Wage
Madrazo6683747578777853616964677534 **** 600

• Despite his age, this multi-GT winner is still among the 10 best stage racers in the game based on OVL.

• 600k is a very nice wage for a 83 climber with solid TT and backup stats.

• Proper PT leader and would absolutely tear through PCT or - god forbid - CT.

• 7 potential, so will still be strong next season.

• Gets auctioned off to the best offer. No floor price.

We're also open to negotiation about other riders unless their name is Teunissen, Powless or Malecki.

Sad to Kruijswijk finally being let go, age waits for no one such a cool rider in his heyday. Interesting to see where Madrazo ends up, plenty of teams with the room in the wage area to secure themselves a proven points scorer like him.

baseballlover312
Gotta echo WJ's thought on the older riders who have retired, especially Kruijswijk. Such an awesome rider. They all earned their place in the Gazelle HOF.

Will be interesting to potentially meet Powless in PTHC this year, since he's just Kamna but better in every way. Pfft

Kruijswijk was quite the rider for you. Sad to see him go, but that's how it is.

We'll definitely talk about certain riders when transfers open. There's this Brit who I asked about last year, I'll come asking again this year Pfft

SotD
En era comes to an end. Kruijswijk isn't exactly what he once was so all good things have to end unfortunately.

Pretty nice wage you landed for Madrazo. I know he wasn't at the top of his game last season, but he's still very much a realistic GT podium rider if he makes some good planning choices. Formolo too on a very nice wage I think. Slightly more expensive than Koretzky but much more versatile in particularly for the many GC races.

Kruiswijk and Kangert are icons, glad they are HOF for you. Hope Pidcock can carry on the Kruiswijk standard in the future. Looking forward to the Madrazo bidding war and whatever rebuild you can manage after that Grin

Transfer Update

Not being away from home during the transfer season this year was great timing, because the squad definitely needed some maintenance. Now that most of the dust has settled, it's time to talk about who joined and who left so far.

Benedikt Mundle7959655569736762596980725531

During our time in CT and PCT Gazelle was all about the hilly races, but in the past few years we slightly lost sight of our roots. And with Madrazo starting to feel his age, we also needed a new superstar point scorer. Combine those two insights and you see why we are over the moon to be able to present one of the punchiest puncheurs in the world: Alexey Lutsenko.

Next step was to acquire a stage race replacement for Madrazo. Considering the fact that the Lutsenko signing had put Formolo in a slightly awkward spot in terms of planning, he seemed like a good candidate to trade. We're delighted to announce that for the next couple of years our climbing squad will be lead by none other than Joseph Dombrowski.

A top quality hilly leader should also have a strong support team. Nicola Bagioli is a young puncheur with the stamina and acceleration required to stay with Lutsenko until the real finale starts.

With Frederico Figueiredo the team acquired an experienced helper for the mountains and TTT's. He might even be able to get some respectable GC results.

We love Malecki and in Dorian Godon we found him a buddy with a somewhat similar skillset. He can support the team in all terrains and is a great candidate to join breakaways in hilly transition stages.

It pained us greatly to let go of Neilson Powless, but we couldn't let the opportunity pass to trade him for Andreas Leknessund. This young man will become a machine after gaining experience at the highest level for two years:

Nat.NameFLMOHITTSTRSRCCBSPACFGDHPRAge
Andreas Leknessund7377747877817769656975697825
Andreas Leknessund7775737677817671677178717625

A TT cannon who is hard to drop no matter the gradient of the road and is even able to survive some mild cobblestones. Or we could turn him into the new Kruijswijk. What would you do?

We conclude this section with the introduction of Benedikt Mundle. This one might raise some eyebrows, but hear me out. Gazelle is a strict no-sprinter team. This means that every year we're in give or take six races doing little more than pedaling around taking pictures of the countryside. From now on we have a purpose on those boring flat roads. Expect 79 FL, 80 FG Benedikt to attack like a madman.

Left

All those acquisitions were obviously not possible without also letting some great riders go.

Davide Formolo •  All-round climber
Formolo was signed in 2014 as a lvl 1 talent and loaned out for the next two seasons to develop. In his first maxed out season, 2017, he immediately made his mark with 366 points on a 110k wage. And after some more training he pulled an exceptional 554 points on a 135k wage in 2019. His presence will be sorely missed.

Angel Madrazo •  Stage racer
We will always have a love-hate relationship with this guy. He's a true legend of the game, but for us he underperformed so bloody often. When he finally showed up though...he won us the Tour de France and indirectly the ProTour. It's bittersweet to see him go.

Neilson Powless •  Stage racer
Wasn't with the team long enough to form a real connection, but we loved his skillset and in his first maxed out year he showed it was a good decision to sign him.

Tao Geoghegan Hart • Stage racer
Same as Powless; solid rider but had to be sacrificed for the greater good.

We'll continue to monitor the market to see if any more transfers are possible.
