@Abi & Guave: Will definitely follow both your teams with much interest. Oram & Watson should be nice additions for CT teams and of course I will follow Groves & Storer (my premium talents) closely. Thanks for the business, guys!

As always a top notch presentation for a top notch team full of Oceanic talent
I'll intently be looking out for Callum Scotson coming off his successful loan period at Swisslion. Looks like he'll be Tom David's right hand man in the cobbled classics
Love to see that Haig training, should make him a real favorite for more TT heavy stage races. Haig and Morton are only 27 and 28 - they sure have a bright future ahead
Hope Bobridge will deliver this year, was a shame to see him failing so often last season. Really hope the updated profiles will suit him better!
Thanks for the feedback, guys. Haig was our only realistic training option and I'm glad it worked out eventually. Obviously would have preferred to get more done, but losing Rohan Dennis for nothing destroyed everything..
..talking about Rohan Dennis: here's our short recap of the 2019 season. He will surely be missed!
2019 | season recap |
as promised, we give a short recap of the last season, that once again ended with an 11th place in the protour rankings for us. the third time in total since we promoted to protour back in 2014.. a year with ups and downs: while lachlan morton had quite a good season with a stage-win and a 3rd place in the gc of the tour de france as his definite highlights, our long time captain and fan favorite jack bobridge had a simply terrible 2019 campaign. clearly the main reason for bennelong to miss out on the long awaited top-10 in the protour.. except of one stage-win, bobridge collapsed whenever it counted (particularly frustrating in the tour of tasmania, where he survived the hilly stage without a time loss, just to disappoint in the final timetrial)..
leigh howard and rohan dennis (we will miss him) had good seasons, even though howard couldn't repeat his stellar gt performance from his vuelta a espana output the year before. our manager's favorite jack haid had a so-and-so year with a 5th place at tour de suisse his best result. he sometimes struggled in the crucial gt outings though, yet delivering a top-10 at giro d'italia.
we missed a race win this time, but had a solid year regarding stage wins, where we could celebrate nine wins eventually. most notable statistic: we had stage wins in every grand tour. a positive end for the season was delivered in the australian national championships, where jack bobridge and glenn o'shea took the nc titles on road and in the timetrial.
the national championships in australia went just as we had hoped for, when jack bobridge (picture above) went for line honours (finishing ahead of lachlan morton) in the road race and thus bouncing back from a disastrous 2019 campaign. glenn o'shea completed the nc double with a surprising victory against suck big guns as former bennelong-rider like durbridge. a very special result for bennelong on home spoil, but also for bobridge and o'shea, who are both on our team since 2012! the green and gold will be worn with pride.
Spoiler
the season goals
the season goals for bennelong - mitchelton can be revealed, too. as always in the past years, we're aiming for the top-10 in the team's standings. losing riders such as rohan dennis and dion smith won't make it an easy task, but when jack bobridge manages to get back to something similar to what he used to be, we may have a chance anyway.
another "business as usual" goal: winning the tour of tasmania. bobridge came close to it several times, but had a terrible final tt last season, when he actually did not lose any significant time in the crucial hilly stage one day before.. he will also be our main man for the tour of norway, where we didn't attend for a long time. rely on bobridge again? yeah, why not?
after finishing 3rd in the tour de france last season, we attempt to repeat this success for another time. it won't be easy, of course. the top-10 at the vuelta a espana is the next (and final) goal for us then. in 2019, we went for 3 (tdf) - 9 (giro) - 12 (vuelta) in the gts and now it's time to go for the triple top-10.
the 2020 campaign is done and dusted. and once again we failed to achieve our goal to enter the top-10 of the protour rankings. we came close (again), but it just wasn't enough to secure our maybe biggest goal by this point of our team history.
the stories of bennelong's season can be told quickly:
- we had some nice gc results in big races, failed to score big with stage results though (only four stage wins in total)
- morton lost the tour de france in an early stage and failed our top-3 goal clearly
- howard had some ups, but couldn't repeat his best results from last year
- bobridge saved our season with two gc wins and a great "comeback" from a terrible 2019 campaign
- trading dion smith away for a cobbler... brilliant idea... not..
jack bobridge definitely was the man of our season and he deserves all the credits for keeping us in fight for the already mentioned top-10 in the protour. two outstanding victories at tirreno-adriatico and tour de slovenie round off his great career he had with our team since joining the project way back in 2012. surely he bounced back from 2019 in style.
morton and haig proved to be reliable gc forces in most cases, even though morton struggled in his most important race this year. the duo remains the team's future though. opposing to howard, who's future ain't clear, but who had a nice end of the season with a solid deutschland tour and the victory in the australian national championship's road race.
we don't want to be too harsh to specific riders, but maybe the biggest conclusion of our season must be the following:
swapping tom david for our beloved dion smith must be amongst the biggest failures in our team's history. dion, we miss you!
Top-10 in all GT's was nice, including a podium even. Just a shame that you didn't really get stage results there, which would have been necessary for that top-10 I guess. Great season by Bobridge, and love to see you able to fill 3 teams in one nc as well
Thanks for the feedback, guys. Bobridge indeed with a nice bounce back season. Overall still slightly frustrating year despite great GC results in the GTs, lacking scoring though..
2021 | to new shores?
the team's future is secured with a new head sponsor being confirmed today: amaysim, an australian provider of mobile phone plans. amaysim operates as a mobile virtual network operator on the optus 4G network, and specialises in offering a range of SIM-only mobile plans.
we're thankful for bennelong's support in the past couple of years and happy for them to stay in our team's pool of sponsors for at least another year - despite stepping back from the "service" as our team's name giving sponsor.
cerveló, another long time partner of our team, will step up as our new second main sponsor. the canadian manufacturer of bycicles decided to push their support to a new level and we're obviously delighted to welcome such a company in a key role within our sponsor pool.
this new premium partnerships raised some questions concerning our team's direction for the upcoming season. after a few years of staying 100 percent oceanian, this strategy may now come to an end - in order to finally achieve the top 10 in the protour, that we've been aiming for since years! nothing's confirmed regarding the management's strategy for the off-season though.
Does this mean you won't be asking about Ewan?
Does this mean i can sign even more riders from you at discount prices?
Does the new jersey have enough colors?
Dropping the 100% Oceanic focus is surely going to rustle some feathers, whilst opening some some very interesting transfer deals for the other Oceanic centric teams come silly-season.
Interesting sponsor change, love the jersey too - it’ll surely stand out. And with a slight shift in focus I’m interested to see who you’ll be targeting outside of Oceania and who’ll be surplus to requirements.
It's going to be weird without Bennelong as it's all I've known since starting MG. But I'm sure you'll do great with your new sponsor and that top 10 goal is on the way!
Another nice looking jersey, bright and strong colors but still very stylish! wouldnt mind if those rumors of staying 100% oceanic would stay rumors but we'll see what you'll be doing during transfers ...
renewals are done and we're sadly saying goodbye to our main sprinter leigh howard, who refused to sign a solid offer for another year in the team's (new) colors. it's been a good ride with us and him, so we obviously thank leigh for his days for the team and some great results overall.
a few minor 'assets' left the team as well, but we welcome back a solid bunch of well known faces - at least for now! the news about a new main sponsor and a possible change of direction (rebuild?) arrived a few weeks ago and with rumors spreading, it's time for a first (maybe not 100 percent accurate) picture of our core roster and possibly available riders - you may spot a few surprises or not:
Although it's definitely not my focus region, there are some interesting "Yes" flags... And why not help out with some loaning stuff? We'll see - don't be surprised if you get a PM soon
