Macskako Kerekparverseny Preview
The third running of the hill-cpbbled beast Macskako Kerekparverseny awaits us. The honours board of this race boasts the duo who've dominated PCT cobbles and more - Baugnies in 2018 and Summerhill in 2019. While the latter is not here, with his team sending him to the Benelux challenge instead, Baugnies is here to try and double up his success. In fact, the clash with Benelux does see some of the cobbles specialists not be here, but it's still a stacked startlist. More on them in the next section.
The race itself is short, but the challenges it poses is difficult. The riders first tackle a gentler hill in the first quarter of the race before moving on to eleven cobbled sections, all but one placed on an hill. The riders in fact will do three and a half and three laps respectively of two intertwining circuits, This race is expected to favour the Northern Classics specialists, but if you can't go up a hill, you probably won't have too much energy left to tackle the cobbles.
Let's turn our attention to the contenders.
| FLA | HIL | RES | COB | ACC | Trentin | 74 | 74 | 71 | 81 | 76 | Altur | 75 | 70 | 70 | 82 | 68 | Daniel | 73 | 69 | 76 | 80 | 72 | Zepuntke | 72 | 69 | 72 | 81 | 65 | Vanspeybrouck | 75 | 70 | 70 | 81 | 68 | Vanbilsen | 78 | 69 | 74 | 80 | 71 | Baugnies | 77 | 71 | 72 | 79 | 72 | Vanmarcke | 76 | 66 | 72 | 80 | 72 | Van Avermaet | 74 | 72 | 69 | 78 | 72 | Van Keirsbulck | 72 | 71 | 73 | 78 | 68 | Breen | 77 | 70 | 72 | 78 | 72 | Sinkeldam | 74 | 75 | 70 | 77 | 68 | Ferreira | 73 | 68 | 70 | 79 | 69 | Moulingui | 74 | 71 | 71 | 78 | 68 |
Among the elite cobbles riders present, Trentin boasts the best puncher capabilities and is thus ranked as top favourite for this race. Altur is slightly better on the stones, but a bit worse off on the inclines. These two are possibly the standout favourites for the win.
The next quartet are equally strong on the cobbles but lack a little when it comes to tackling the hills. Daniel, Zepuntke, Vanspeybrouck and Vanbilsen are all capable of winning this race on their day, but they will need to be attentive on the inclines to keep up with the stronger riders there. Vanspeybrouck will be looking to make best use of a rare team leadership chance.
The aging Baugnies and Van Avermaet are still capable riders for a race like this, but they are probably more of a Top 5 to Top 10 contender than a serious threat for the win. However, given their past record and their guile, you can never count them out.
Neither Vanmarcke nor Van Keirsbulck have had a great season, and both of their managers will be hoping that their fortunes improve in this race.
Sinkeldam has the best puncher capabilities among all riders in the favourites list and will be looking to use it against stringer cobbles riders. He needs to pull out something special though if he's to be anything better than a Top 10 competitot.
Breen and Moulingui always seem to have a surprise in them and their teams will be hoping for more of the same in this race.
Ferreira must deliver some big points for his team, whose PCT survival have been at stake, and probably out of reach, for some time now.
| FLA | HIL | RES | COB | ACC | Naesen | 75 | 72 | 73 | 76 | 76 | Nolf | 73 | 65 | 71 | 79 | 70 | Owen | 73 | 69 | 71 | 77 | 71 | Saber | 75 | 68 | 72 | 76 | 79 | Taubel | 73 | 65 | 73 | 78 | 64 | Chatarunga | 72 | 67 | 72 | 77 | 68 | Schoonbroodt | 72 | 75 | 73 | 74 | 72 | Van der Haar | 77 | 72 | 72 | 75 | 70 |
The outsiders list puts Naesen at the top, and he's another with decent hill climbing abilities to go with his cobbles skill.
Nolf and Taubel are old hands who have a lot of experience in races like this but it'll take them quite a throwback to pose a threat to the favourites.
Owen is most likely to be the right hand man for Altur, but in a race like this, nearness to your leader can get you a good result as well.
Saber will be hoping for an improved showing on the cobbles, an area he has really struggled on all season.
Caturanga is the second cog for Valio while Schoonbroodt and Van der Haar are expected to play similar roles for their teams as well.

With the Benelux-Macskako split, hopefully Zepuntke can top the podium here. Would be nice to see a good result from him.

As always, we'll be hoping that the hills play a significant role here. It was a tough decision in planning to bring Ramon here, since he would have also fit perfectly in Benelux. But ultimately, we had JJ who could also do well in Benelux, but not here, and it made no sense to send both of them there.
I think I expected less competition, but I guess most people weren't trusting Benelux's cobbles selectivity or didn't want to sacrifice the extra race days. Besides Summerhill, basically everyone's here. Sinkeldam has had great success and huge failures this year. Hopefully he'll be back to success here. If the hills play no role, best we could hope for is a top 10, probably top 15. If the hills do play a role, we have an outside shot at the top 5, which would be critical for us.
Just please don't puncture again. There's nothing more frustrating with crashes turned off then having your guy be the only one who punctures and is taken out of the race.
Thanks for the preview!

Thanks for the preview! This is the type of race that GVK usually wins without any issues when we're in the CT, however that's not the case anymore, I really hope for a top 5 tho as it is starting to look tight on scoring opportunities!

Would be cool if Naesen was able to do something here, but I feel like he's probably poised for one of those futile long range attack from 50-80 kilometers out. But maybe he surprises me. Schoonbroodt maybe has a shot at a handful of points in the Top 25 if things go well. Good luck and no punctures to everyone and thanks for the preview!

Big opportunity for Altur to perform, or will it be the final nail in his coffin as worst-training-spend-in-MG-history?
Wolverine is top level support, and enough other CB riders for at least some help. We really need a result here, not for survival, but to give me some hope our classics unit is worth preserving.

Expecting zero points here, hopefully at least a breakaway appearance.
Thanks for the preview Abhi

Nothing to win or lose anymore for my team, so Baugnies, go loco and attack early!
Thanks for the "short notice" preview and report already, Abhi! I think you're right with what you said about Jerome, around top-5/10 should be doable normally Nice to have two cobbled races in one day actually.

I'm sorry that I doubted you, Oliver Phenomenal performance to keep up with many nominally stronger riders! I was starting to get optimistic when we were still close to the front in the peloton relatively late in the race, but even then wouldn't have expected this result. Fantastic stuff! Schoonbroodt 20th is just about what I had hoped for from him, too.
Congrats to bbl as well, what a result for Sinkeldam! And thank you for the report Abhishek, I enjoyed it a lot

12th is pretty darn good from Saber given how he has been on the cobbles this year. It's a shame this is a one off rather than a more often than not, but I'll take any point I can get in this relegation battle.
Congrats bbl, the positive streak of results isn't stopping
Thanks for a great report Abhi

SINKELDAM YOU ABSOLUTE BEAST!!!!!!
Wow, I'm speechless. That was just such an epic performance by him. The closer we got the finish, the better he looked. After De Vreese's attack I got kind of worried he'd be alone for too long and lose positioning. But Sinkeldam was exactly where he needed to be in the finale. He stalked the front and waited for the perfect moment to attack, and hit the front again perfectly in time for the final uphill. He played it as well as I could have played it in PCM, maybe better.
I think it's undoubted that the hills helped him here, but mountain might have also played a role, which gives him and extra boost over a lot of the pure cobblers. With this, and a couple of other early season performances, Sinkeldam seems to have found his niche. He disappointed on pure cobbles in CT, but in these hybrid races, he really shows his force, even at the PCT level. He has real value when used properly, and he showed that here.
A C1 classic win is undoubtedly a huge result for us right now, and it vindicates any reservations I might have had about negotiating the Benelux/Macskako split in the way I did. These are the kinds of days that might help us seal our promotion bid. It's just great to see everything come together for once. It's almost been a tail of two seasons for me. Some guys way overperforming, some way underperforming. But in the end, we're getting to where we need to as it evens out.
Oh, by the way, loved our team's aggression. Shoutout to Joel Suter, who made the breakaway in what I believe is his very first professional race! De Vreese's attack worried me a bit more, but in the end it's a strongman's game and teammates only matter if you get caught behind, which Sinkeldam did not.
Thank you Abhishek for a great report, and thanks to all for the congrats!
Edit: Also, even if VSB was good for us and I have no ill will towards him, it must always be satisfying for Sinkeldam to beat his old captain from that group!

Big win for Carlsberg!
For ourselves, 10th feels a bit disappointing for Vanbilsen after letting the team work all day. Bolivar with a nice result though.
Thanks for the report!

Baugnies misunderstood my message it seems it hurts to see him perform like this in one of our biggest scoring opportunities of the end of the season, but that´s life eh. Nice to see Saber doing quite well, happy for you, red. Congratulations to bbl as well, always looking forward to your detailed comment after you win a race
Fantastic report as well, thanks for that, Abhishek!

If we had to lose that race i'm more than happy to have it go to Carlsberg! yes BBL! Always a popular winner!
Altur however, not good to lose to Sinkledam. If only i'd have spent the 2+million on Wolverine, he'd be a monster! Another great rider from the American and i feel we might be saying an early adios to Marcos and backing a new toro...
Also getting Edmo into the Top20, and Domene and Matthews inside the Top40 show we do have a good unit if a little inconsistent.
