Windhoek ITT
Welcome Namibia for the 8th edition of the Windhoek Individual Time trial. Windhoek has about half-a-million residents and is located, roughly, in the geographic center of Namibia, which seems appropriate since it is the capital.
After existing at the C2HC level for the past few years the race is stepping up to C1 this year. No change in the parcours which will once again feature 2 legs on a 41km flat course. Times from the two legs will be combined to determine the winner.
39 riders from 13 teams will contest the race. Despite the step up in class Glanbia Food’s Freddy Cruz will return to defend his title. Time trial specialists, Glanbia, also bring 2013 winner Michael Ford, giving them the first and last winners of the race (prior to this edition). In addition, we have 2018 winner Mottin and last year’s 4th place finisher Hofer
But with the step in class all of these riders are going to struggle to reach the top end of the leader board. Since there are only 39 participants, here are stats for all of them, sorted by TT value.
Rider | Team | Div | TT | RS | Marlen Zmorka | Repsol - Netflix | PCT | 82 | 75 | Jacob Fiedler | Mapei | PCT | 82 | 74 | Marcel Kittel | Repsol - Netflix | PCT | 81 | 70 | Mario Gonzalez Salas | Repsol - Netflix | PCT | 80 | 76 | Jesse Sergent | GCN Racing | PCT | 80 | 74 | Damien Howson | Duolingo | PCT | 80 | 74 | Yoann Paillot | Farfetch Pro Cycling | PCT | 80 | 74 | Lucas Schädlich | Kraftwerk Man Machine | PCT | 80 | 71 | Alexandor Cataford | Podium Ambition | PCT | 79 | 75 | Hugues Mottin | Swisslion Cycling Team | PCT | 79 | 74 | Josh Atkins | Mapei | PCT | 78 | 75 | Giorgi Nareklishvili | DK - SVA Zalgiris | PCT | 78 | 74 | Freddy Cruz | Glanbia Foods Cycling Project | CT | 78 | 72 | Andreas Hofer | DK - SVA Zalgiris | PCT | 78 | 72 | Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg | Minions | PCT | 78 | 71 | Alfredo Balloni | Mapei | PCT | 78 | 71 | Michael Ford | Glanbia Foods Cycling Project | CT | 78 | 59 | Sean Downey | Glanbia Foods Cycling Project | CT | 77 | 74 | Richard Laningo Laizer | Project: Africa | CT | 77 | 71 | Yevgeni Nepomnyachsniy | Swisslion Cycling Team | PCT | 76 | 73 | Faycal Hamza | Project: Africa | CT | 76 | 73 | John Archibald | GCN Racing | PCT | 76 | 72 | Steven Burke | GCN Racing | PCT | 76 | 72 | Chad Haga | Minions | PCT | 76 | 70 | Metkel Kiflay | Project: Africa | CT | 76 | 70 | Stefan De Bod | Farfetch Pro Cycling | PCT | 75 | 76 | Welle Jallays | DK - SVA Zalgiris | PCT | 75 | 74 | Chris Barton | Minions | PCT | 75 | 73 | Izidor Penko | Swisslion Cycling Team | PCT | 74 | 73 | Alexandre Geniez | Kraftwerk Man Machine | PCT | 74 | 73 | Josue Gonzalez Cortes | Kraftwerk Man Machine | PCT | 74 | 72 | Kristian Vanderpool | Podium Ambition | PCT | 73 | 62 | Edoardo Affini | Farfetch Pro Cycling | PCT | 71 | 73 | Elias Abou Rachid | Duolingo | PCT | 70 | 70 | Brent Van Moer | Gjensidige Pro Cycling Team | CT | 70 | 69 | Darren Matthews | Podium Ambition | PCT | 70 | 67 | Alexys Brunel | Gjensidige Pro Cycling Team | CT | 69 | 69 | Dilmurdjon Siddikov | Gjensidige Pro Cycling Team | CT | 68 | 70 | Norman Vahtra | Duolingo | PCT | 55 | 69 |
Clearly PCT TT juggernaut Repsol is looking to dominate this race with all 3 of their riders near the top of the chart. Fiedler, Kittel, Gonzalez Salas, Sergent, Howson, Paillot, and Schädlich provide the stiffest competition. By bringing 3 strong riders Repsol will also be well distributed in the start list should the weather conditions impact the race.
Finally, we can conclude that Vahtra must have pissed in the wrong pot at Duolingo, as he has been sent to earn 2 very tough race days of experience.
A little early on the preview here as I won't be able to post tomorrow. So look for the race late Sunday (aka early Monday site time)

Man, Repsol is going to mop this up.
Looking to get the best of Howson here. He's got one stage victory and a handful of underwhelming results. Time to break that tide.
Either that o Vahtra to find the ride of his life. Gotta reckon I giggled at his referral in the preview. Thanks Ulrich!

Here because I had 2 RD left. Will be happy with a Top 10 but no expectations.

The 5 meters elevation might be too much for Schädlich!

Mottin will be awful as per usual I suspect, so I can only hope for a great day by Nepomnyachsniy to score some points here.
Thanks for the preview

Expected win by Repsol. Thanks for the great report Ulrich

Not great, but still around 45 points so it's not a total bust. However, Giorgi has been outperforming Hofer throughout the season and somehow shat the bed here, strange

Winning this race last year and getting 14th this year sums up my year.
Things got a lot harder and I don't know why, just higher stats I guess

Schädlich not challenged by the gradients thank goodness, very pleased with 6th after being 8th favourite.
Congrats to Aquarius and thanks to Ulrich for the report.

Like most of the team, Cataford really was better in the PT last year. Missing the Top10 here is a massive disappointment.
But we can definitely sell him for a decent amount in the off-season

Missing the time when Zmorka and Fiedler were unreliable bastards
Good enough from Howson I guess. With the team taking stage 1 in Romandie without him this was always going to be a nice bonus.
Congrats on the win Aquarius. Thanks for the fluid and detailed reports Ulrich!
