Absolutely horrendous round for me. Every single answer sucked. I went with computer because it seemed easiest to conceive of as a physical invention, but Internet won the day. I avoided Vietnam specifically thinking Europeans wouldn't care and got burned. Thought recency bias would give Covid-19 the edge, but 9/11 was the obvious choice. And I definitely was not expecting Joan of Arc to win for women, I thought my audience would mean Elizabeth would be the easy answer. Choosing Caesar over Hitler is pure stupidity on my part, no question.
At least my prediction that I would be bad was correct.
Well, now that I've been embarrassed in my field of study, I guess human geography is the next subject to be terrible at.
I have a PhD in Human Geography, I feel the pressure .

I think it has more to do with the fact that all of us know where we were when 9/11 happened, and I'd guess a large percentage were kids/teens at that time, so it's so drilled in your mind.

I'm very happy with the first and second answer - I didn't think of 9/11 first, but I assumed that most people would
I'd elect to disqualify the Cold War from question 3, since it in and of itself wasn't technically a war but a collection of smaller wars lol
I'm kicking myself on question 4, I wanted to go with Marie Curie first but I backed out and went for Liz II because I thought more people would pick it lol

There is a reason that the game is called "I'm with stupid"

Maybe it's because I'm an American, but 9/11 is definitely the best answer for this question. Rosa Parks and US Civil War were other American biased answers I had. Oh well, onto the next round.

It's all about availability bias in this game and not necessarily what one would like to choose. Getting how others think is what makes it fun, not what one thinks himself. Using the internet while talking about inventions -> obvious choice, etc.

You are right of course, but complaining is also part of it and almost as fun as what you mentioned.

I'm with stupid 2021 - Game 1, Round 4
In retrospect, it may have been a mistake to exclude Russia from the answers, because in its stead, another country emerged as a seemingly easy top choice. But more on that later. This was by far the round with the most points, including the top answer of the whole game so far, enough to shake up the GC a good bit. Here's how it went:
1. Name a country with a generally warm climate.
This was the question that provided the least amount of points and the most 1 point answers, also one of two questions with a tied top answer: 5 points each to Spain and Brazil. Australia (3) and Mexico (2) were the only other countries mentioned more than once.
Spoiler Brazil | 5 | Spain | 5 | Australia | 3 | Mexico | 2 | Central African Republic | 1 | Italy | 1 | Jamaica | 1 | Saudi Arabia | 1 | South Africa | 1 | Thailand | 1 | UAE | 1 |
2. Name a country with a generally cold climate other than Russia.
I thought the Scandinavian countries would provide enough variety, but instead Canada dominated. 11 points for that, 3 for Finland, 2 for Norway and Iceland, respectively. jandal got cheeky and decided that while Russia was excluded, the Soviet Union was definetely on the table.
Spoiler Canada | 11 | Finland | 3 | Iceland | 2 | Norway | 2 | Antarctica | 1 | Greenland | 1 | Soviet Union | 1 | Sweden | 1 |
3. Name a country with a high population density.
Second question with two top answers: 7 each for India and Singapore. 2 for Monaco, the actual "correct" answer (unless you include Macau), nothing else more than 1.
Spoiler India | 7 | Singapore | 7 | Monaco | 2 | Bangladesh | 1 | China | 1 | Germany | 1 | Hong Kong | 1 | San Marino | 1 | Vatican City | 1 |
4. Name a country with a low population density other than Russia.
Once again, Canada was the top answer here, though not by quite as much as for Q2. 9 points for it, compared to 5 for Australia and 4 for Mongolia, which in this case was the "correct" one. Iceland for 2 points was the only other answer that wasn't a 5-point bid (both of which happened to be the same as their respective answers to Q2), which I think makes this the Q with the fewest different answers so far.
Spoiler Canada | 9 | Australia | 5 | Mongolia | 4 | Iceland | 2 | Antarctica | 1 | Soviet Union | 1 |
5. Name a country with a colorful flag.
Had I given this a bit more thought, maybe it should have been obvious, not sure. But this was the most rewarding question of all so far, at least if you answered South Africa, which gave you 13 points here. No chance for any other flag, Brazil, Mauritius (kind of shocked TheManxMissile wasn't one of them considering his MG team) and the Seychelles were each mentioned twice.
Spoiler South Africa | 13 | Brazil | 2 | Mauritius | 2 | Seychelles | 2 | Central African Republic | 1 | Jamaica | 1 | USA | 1 |
Standings
We have two perfect rounds this time, interestingly with different answers (but same points) for Q1. Croatia14 wins his third round in a row, tied with Vali for 45 points. FreitasPCM confirms his good GC position with a third place here and 41 points, Ripley and LLDS have their best rounds in places 4 and 5.
On the other end, jandal7 has his second consecutive 5 pointer, while quadsas, like jandal 2 rounds ago, doesn't quite get there thanks to bbl's Mexico answer for Q1. bbl and Bikex were the only ones who could at least somewhat overcome not choosing South Africa and they land in the midfield, the other five who didn't have SA find themselves in the bottom five places above quadsas and jandal.
With knockout and Marcovdw both having a mediocre round, the overall ranking is suddenly wide open as we head into the final round. With his massive points haul, Croatia14 actually jumps into the lead, now one point ahead of knockout and two ahead of previous leader Marcovdw, who is tied with FreitasPCM. And even Vali, who I already counted out after last round, is back in it.
alexkr00 and kandesbunzler follow on places six and seven, 10 and 11 points behind the lead, respectively. I would say that they don't have much of a chance anymore, but after this round, I sure won't.
Further down the standings, LLDS moves up four places after missing last round, tied with Vali for the biggest improvement of the round. Shonak meanwhile has worked his way into striking distance of those with the full four rounds with another solid performance.
I'm with stupid 2021: cunego59's Round 5
Animals
1. Name a fish.
2. Name a bird.
3. Name a reptile.
4. Name a mammal.
5. Name an insect.
PM me your answers until 8 PM daily time on Monday, February 8th.
We're going super basic for the finale. Again, very unsure of what to expect, could be very varied or very centralized. Good luck to everyone!

I'm surprised that the flag questions had such a dominant top answer. South Africa wasnt my first idea but only came to my mind after some thinking.

True, what is it even good for?
Not possible to win it anymore I fear, so maybe I can use this round to mess up the plans of people going for 5 points

For me Seychelles is the most colorful one as it's almost like a bunch of colors throw in there.
South Africa is a better designed flag for me as it's shapes don't make it particularly popping out as colorful, but then I realized that there's a lot of colors in there and people will probably go for that one.
Edit: now I see Nemolito actually had the same answers as me at both questions that went to Canada. Nice

Thought no one would go for Spain after that blizzard some weeks ago. Will give a thought about this round and send the answers afterwards! |
