Trofeo Laigueglia

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/profiles/c2hc_trl.png

We have a brand new race on the MG calendar, Trofeo Laigueglia. Falling into the C2HC race category, it is mandatory race for all CT teams and CT teams only. The race is 178 km in length and is one that favours the puncheurs. It features 3 longer climbs in the first part of the race and 6 ascents up a few shorter hills, with a downhill finish off the last of those. For those having ambitions to win the race, it will be important to save their energies on the longer climbs and the valleys in between, for the finish will surely prove to be explosive.

Let's look at some of the favourites:

Tier I

FLAMONHILRESACC
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kelderman7071827572

We've spoken about him before and we will continue to speak about him as the out and out pre-race favourite in these hilly CT races. Standing on a tier of his own is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Wilco Kelderman. A man of many skills, his best bet might be to attack on one of the last few hills as he can certainly distance the rest of the field and avoid a more uncertain sprint finish.

Tier II

FLAMONHILRESACC

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen7370787479

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking7169787476

Tier II consists of five very talented riders, all well rounded to challenge Kelderman and themselves for the win. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Moscon stands out as the best climber and most resistant rider on this list, while the others are all more explosive, which might favour them in a reduced bunch sprint.

Tier III

FLAMONHILRESACC
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Barbin6968787376
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Frankiny6978767575
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard7274777274
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Quevedo6971787275
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Felline6866777378

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Zaini6666806570

We have a bit of everything in Tier III, but don't be fooled all these riders should have within in them to win the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Barbin is just a notch below some of those explosive riders from the tier above. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Frankiny is a climber in every sense of the word. He'll want a stern pace up the longer climbs to tire out the others, but he has a fast finish on him as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard is well suited to climbing shorter and longer hills and is just a strong allrounder.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Quevedo is also not averse to some climbing. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Felline has one of the best accelerations so that will be his calling card. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Palini has some good skills, but lacks the resistance. He will have to make sure to conserve his energy and stay out of the wind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Lavery will certainly be hoping he can make it with the leaders all the way to the end and take advantage of his sprinting. Lastly we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Zaini who has is great going uphill, but lacks everything else. Can he make it to the last few climbs to deliver a big attack?

Only one thing to do for us: get in the break and hope for a Colombo scenario! Thanks for the preview Smile

Just like in every other hilly race this year, everything that's not a zero pointer is appreciated. Ndayisenga joins Ben Nasser and Khederi, gives us a little more depth. Wouldn't mind a repeat of the Colombo scenario either though Pfft

Interested to see how good a rider like Frankiny will be here, all about the pace in the pack on those first 2/3 of the race.

baseballlover312
We got really lucky with Gregaard's win in Colombo. It might be too much to ask for another good result from the MG gods. No breakaway win this time I hope.

Obviously this one should be Kelderman's to lose. Just a matter of how selective it is. There have been a lot of large sprints in these hills races so far, and we have another downhill finish. If Wilco comes to the line with 40 other guys, no guarantee he or the other top guys will do well.

Interested to see how Frankiny does as a climber. He should be able to save some more energy in the first half, but I'm not sure it'll matter after the descent and flat. For my own team I've sent Fabbro here with extra race days, so we'll see how that goes.

Hopefully JJ puts in a good ride and further solidifies himself as a quality CT leader. Thanks for the preview!

We just need points, no high hopes at all. A podium would be amazing though

Breakaway and win, why not? Wink Felline and Roux hopefully dual lead and both get a Top 10.

Well, I'm absolutely fine with a breakaway win - if possible, the breakaway should contain Lienhard and Thièry...

It's yet another one of these hilly races with the finish line after a downhill - these are pretty much random, with often 50+ riders arriving on s.t. My main hope would of course be for the first part of the race to be pretty hard, so Moscon could save energy compared with most others. And then take Wilco's wheel and overtake him on the final meters.

But well, I can live with any Top 10, as that's our first goal of the season. A Top 5 would be what I can realistically expect with my line-up.

Thanks for the preview, and hoping for a good race!

Frankiny's season debut here, hopefully he can do well for us in this classic and put that ACC to good use.

Yes, yes, everyone hoping for a breakaway win, because of you-know-who. Too much pressure being put on him every time. This is what Bewley must have felt all these years Pfft

No breaks please PCM. Again with the downhill finish, nothing is a given, but at least let the best duel it out for the win.

Thanks for the preview Smile

Haas was brought in to compete in these races but all hopes on a breakaway

Can't we just do a 19-team co-ordinated breakaway and let Philips chase us the entire stage? That would be our only hope Pfft

Great race, great report. Felline with a really strong performance until 1km. From a 3rd place secured dropped all the way down to a 10th spot is frustrating but how did the great philosopher Sagan say it: is what is. Gratz to Carrefour. After this race there is no need to be afraid of Keldermerckx imho Wink

Thanks for a nice report. Enjoyable.

I was already preparing a praise speech on Michael Storer for his work, but eventually a disappointing result for Philips. Watson kinda failed to do his job? Anyway, better results will come Wink Congrats to the winner and those, who had satisfying results.

cunego59
Tough going for Kelderman. I suppose if you're not at the front as the top favorite, no one's going to help, so him missing that initial Moscon attack was the dagger. Congrats to Carrefour, Quevedo played that perfectly! Thank you for a very nice report once again, red!

This is our first zero pointer of the season, if I'm not mistaken, which is a fantastic thing to say at the end of February. Lopez did his best, Ndayisenga in 40th showed that this is theoretically a decent race for him, it's just unfortunate the the AI decides that any non-Top 15 leader automatically rides in the back half of the peloton. But again, that's what was to be expected, so I'm not mad. On to greener pastures!

Fabianski
Wow, grande Moscon! Very unfortunate to miss out on the win after having done all the work, but wheel sucking has always been the best strategy in PCM. This result definitely saves our month, though, with 5 riders in the Top 20 and almost 80 points if I'm right! Exactly what our puncheurs needed after disappointing races in Hong Kong and Sri Lanka - and that team result is just amazing!

Congrats to Carrefour nonetheless, and thanks for a thrilling report!

baseballlover312
Excellent racing and excellent reporting, thank you redordead! Nice to see some excitement and selection. Congrats to Carrefour and commiserations to Philips. Not at all what they were hoping for I'm sure.

Juul-Jensen puts in another very solid ride here. He seemed to have quite good legs, but was slightly out of position on the final ascent. Thay may have cost us the podium, but it also may have given us a top 5, depending on how his energy was spent. 4th is right in our range of expectation for these races, and it will bring home some nice points, so no problems there. Pretty satisfying to have some consistency in these races. So far, I'm quite happy to have kept JJ on this salary.

Down towards the end of the results, I do find it funny that Resell somehow beat Fabbro. Guess we've at least stopped having climbers be OP in the hills. Pfft

Nice way to end a quite good February for us. March will be more sparse of racing, so hopefully we've put ourselves in a decent rankings position.
