January Review

Just recently started, the first month of the season already over with the first 10 race days for the team. In the following review, we will check if our goals and expectations worked out or not.

Badaling International

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/profiles/pt_bad.jpg

Our goal was to improve from 4th in 2019 including some depth scoring...unfortunately we weren`t able to acchieve this despite still getting a bit of a result at least.
Sean De Bie might have become the best puncheur on paper, but his performance didn`t improve at all unfortunately in his season debut, so hopefully he can improve quickly in the following races.

In the end our leader acchieved 5th in the starter, not able to beat the ageing veterans Ponzi or Hagen and neither weaker puncheurs such as Koretzky.

Depth wise we clearly failed to improve from 2019 but at least new rider Loic Vliegen as 22nd did fairly well and showed that he might be the new elite support for his country man this year while Zardini 86th, Carboni 104th, Stuyven 123rd and others underperformed quite a lot depth wise.

Tour of Qatar

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/profiles/pt_qat.jpg

The Tour of Qatar was once again a successful Aegon stage race.
Not as superb as last year when Groenewegen came in 2nd in the GC but as 4th in 2020 he was almost as successful and actually only missed a tiny second to finish 2nd again!
4-12-4-16-2 his sprint finishes here which show the problem of consistency really as twice he missed out on bonus seconds. That said, if on a good day he is coming very close to win against highest competition. In especially day 5 was unfortunate as Groenewegen already celebrated his stage win, when Kennaugh passed him very late, so that he only came over the line 2nd! The missing bonus second for the GC podium?

Other than him not a lot to tell about our team as Frison as best time trialist came into a top50 GC, while Van der Hoorn and Boom only went for a breakaway appearance and Ballerini, Van Hooydonck and Bauhaus were needed to chase and support Groenewegen!

Tour of East Java

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/profiles/pthc_eja.jpg

We predicted, it would be hard to achieve the top10 here due to the high quality startlist, though wanted to try as Olivier used to perform well in the mountains, but more so on longer stage races and less on one day climbs.

And as expected, we failed this as well but the bigger surprise, it wasn`t Olivier, who came closest! The Dutch actually only finished 19th while it was Valls as new mountain co-leader to come into 15th on the climb, whcih resulted in 16th for the GC, unfortunately last of 5 riders within the same time!
Also Zardini in 37th showed an improvement from Badaling while Machado, Dekker, Rucigaj and Ciccone all are inside the top100 for depth!

The highlight though the 3rd from Groenewegen in the opener, which shows his great early form already.

February Preview

February is one of those months including all PT eligible race categories from PTHC over PT to GTM plus it`s very special as it sees the PT triple clash of Paris-Nice, Tirreno-Adriatico and Grand Duche Classic. GTM obviously is the sprinter/puncheur classic Milano San Remo while PTHC is Pro Hallstatt for us, a hybrid of mountain and hill classic. With other teams also going to Portugal PTHC, the rankings post February might see us with less race days used obviously as many others.
Last but not least the Copenhagen Malmo TTT for us.

Copenhagen-Malmo TTT

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/profiles/pt_ttt.jpg

Last year the team was pretty well set for a TTT, this year it`s just a race day to do.

Frederik Frison71566777737167546565636777
Lars Boom71677174697066705769717674
Thomas Koep68757372747575535257546572
Thomas Dekker69756972687371556162636172
Rafael Valls68787471777676556171686571
Giulio Ciccone67777371707073505169595979
Nathan Van Hooydonck71637070737268786172646770
Michael O'Loughlin68626570646963626364666468

That said, the lineup is a full 70+ lineup with the average at 72 only though. Basically just Frison at 77 is a real time trialist with veteran Boom unfortunately no longer is a known TT winner, neither goes for Dekker. With the amount of hill/mo skills though we at least might storm the uphill section quite well.
No result expected here! In especially as in last couple years we always switched between a good and a bad result yearly, so this year apparently must go bad again.

Tirreno-Adriatico

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/profiles/pt_tad.jpg

It would have been a perfect Sean De Bie race here, who already did well as 5th in 2018 in a hilly edition. Plus he used to do much better in stage races anyway. Though he is not riding it!

Edoardo Zardini69767767706666687268727472
Giovanni Carboni69767567717171626668617267
Mathieu van der Poel73697469777673727276767973
Adam Toupalik75647363717268686468657467
Thomas Dekker69756972687371556162636172
Frederik Frison71566777737167546565636777
Harm Vanhoucke68706767666970636766696968
Alan Banaszek70616362687065577377656870

Instead it`s Zardini leading the team in his home race. Actually he did well in the hilly P-N last season as 9th in the GC, just one spot behind De Bie! Though it`s less of a hybrid race this season with clear hill finishes.

Goal can only be to show ourselves here with a top20 for Zardini with main support from Carboni and Toupalik.

Additionally van der Poel is showing himselves as "leader" as we give him lots of freedom to aim for a top25-30 himself with the chance to "sprint" on the hillier stages for stage results. Might not work out in the end, but let`s give it a try.

Paris-Nice

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/profiles/pt_pni.jpg

Olivier starts his stage race campaign of 2020 in Paris-Nice and has big support behind him.
Though support is partly for Groenewegen, who is going for a stage win on the 2 flat stages!

Daan Olivier72817669768077596571707169
Peter Velits68797271696867526262676071
Tiago Machado67787168686565505663635568
Thomas Koep68757372747575535257546572
Ziga Rucigaj68726969707169616363686672
Harold Tejada65706965667065575967656365
Nathan Van Hooydonck71637070737268786172646770
Dylan Groenewegen73616764747185598281596472

With the small amount of flat TT kilometers in the prologue, Olivier is aiming for the top10. Velits (last year 15th in T-A, Olivier`s main lieutnant Machado and Koep to support him, which should be a strong depth behind him.
Sprint wise Groenewegen hopefully can grab a stage win as those 8 race days might be too much for many top sprinters.

Classique du Grand-Duché

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/profiles/pt_gdu.jpg

For once Sean De Bie starts in Grand Duche trying to avoid many top puncheurs in the stage races going for a classic win!

Sean De Bie73718472777669687275746568
Loic Vliegen71677761767070686674716967
Jasper Stuyven70637758756768626674796958
Arvid de Kleijn70607360707075667474636467
Giulio Ciccone67777371707073505169595979
Lars Boom71677174697066705769717674
Davide Ballerini71647157727171707278747257
Taco van der Hoorn75607055766960755666846652

De Bie with his 84 hill always is one of the top favourites but in the hope of just 4-5 top top puncheurs, we hope to win in Luxembourg. After a suboptimal Badaling, this must be our goal now as even the podium would be a small disappointment in this event.
In fact pre season we decided to make this our win goal! So he better delivers.
Vliegen has done well as helper, Stuyven must improve. But in general the support is there with the rest of the team being 70+ even though also 73 max.

Pro Hallstatt Classic

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/profiles/pthc_hal.jpg

One of the hardest races on the calendar, going up and down all day with long climbs. So clearly a big hybrid event. Having Spilak as race winner in the first two editions, it clearly shows to be a perfect race for riders like him.

Olivier was 11th in 2018 and 28th last year when instead Keinath went up to 9th.

Daan Olivier72817669768077596571707169

Harold Tejada65706965667065575967656365
Harm Vanhoucke68706767666970636766696968

Let`s hope Olivier is more in his 2018 form as he will lead us here aiming for a late top10 or minimum top15. Behind him Velits, Machado, Ciccone, Zardini as top support. In especially later actually could also enter the top20-30 himself with Velits having small chances himself.

Milano San Remo

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/profiles/ptm_msr.jpg

Bitter-sweet 2nd last year for Groenewegen. Far more than expected but always unfortunate if winning the main sprint only beaten by a solo attacker.

Dylan Groenewegen73616764747185598281596472
Mathieu van der Poel73697469777673727276767973
Davide Ballerini71647157727171707278747257
Loic Vliegen71677761767070686674716967
Jasper Stuyven70637758756768626674796958
Adam Toupalik75647363717268686468657467
Nathan Van Hooydonck71637070737268786172646770
Taco van der Hoorn75607055766960755666846652

The tactic though remains. All-in for Groenewegen to have a good day passing the climbs as good as possible to again fight for a top5 here, top10 though is the goal as startlist will be tough. Therefore he will have strong support including hill sprinters Van der Poel or Ballerini. Both not maxed yet but already able to sprint for minor positions themselves.

Vliegen and Stuyven lead a strong hill support to cover Groenewegen or even attack at one point with Toupalik and Van der Hoorn trying to control the peloton as much as possible.

Many points-scoring opportunities for the team this month as the calendar is heavily loaded. Looking forward to how the team goes in the triple clash especially. January was quite good, if not outstanding. Hopefully the form carries over into Feb Smile

redordead
We're actually in 3 of those races. Copenhagen, Paris - Nice and Hallstatt. Not a threat in the former two, but I hope to score some points in the latter Pfft

Interesting to see no De Bie in San Remo given how Hagen did last year. Although Groenewegen is still a great option there.

Good luck Smile

I hope so too Abhishek. Let's hope Olivier having better legs while the others can deliver as well.

@redordead: I thought about it but both leaders likely wouldn't have worked and in worst case De Bie waiting for him. So I decided to go the sprinter way which worked well with him on PCM18 already.
Plus probably race day struggle otherwise with De Bie I guess.

Pfft

Tbh while being 2rd stage race, East Java more felt like a classic for him. Startlist wise as also recovery wise.

But obviously you are right.

Pre Transfers Team Talk

The Farewell

A nice list of huge riders for the team in this year`s farewell. Probably the biggest ever!

Lars Boom
Easily the biggest Rothaus/Aegon team rider of all time! Since the start of the team almost 10 years ago, Lars Boom was the captain from the smaller races to the biggest races on the calendar. He got some of our biggest wins in the team history and unforgettable the Geraardsbergen World Championship triumph or his hunt for the TONE overall win after plenty of podiums and close shots vs. long time rivals Sam Bewley or Fabian Cancellara there. And he eventually made it in the end just in time.
In 2021 though he really feels the age and despite trying to get a contract once more for another team, a follow-up sportif directeur contract is already sealed with him.

Thomas Dekker
Another Dutch veteran. He came to us basically post his prime and still he somewhat delivered huge results for us including the sensational Dauphine GC win, a stage win in the Tour de France and actually as well a late career top10s there in 2017 & 2018 as well.

Peter Velits
Velits kind of followed Dekker`s example becoming the 2nd GC guy for the team and he showed pure class at the age of 34 with a 10th in the Tour de France making it the 3rd consecutive season for us on that exact spot. Other than that he did lead Daan Olivier to success with all his experience.

Phil Bauhaus Tiago Machado
Bauhaus and Machado were main parts as helpers for Groenewegen/Olivier in the last season, when they basically were protecting them non-stop in almost every race.

2021 Pre Transfers Squad

The 3 leaders De Bie, Olivier, Groenewegen remain the same and are very likely to go into the 2021 season as our riders. Though you never know for sure, right?

Newly maxed riders van der Poel, Van Hooydonck and Carboni give the team the needed depth and finally also some more strength on the cobbles, something we hugely ignored in the past. Same here, unlikely to see them leave.

Valls is slowly ageing and is surely a rider to leave trying his late season luck on CT level and same might go for younger Ciccone, who could as well be of more value in the lower divisons while Zardini is a big part of De Bie`s support team but still not a defined rider to stay.

Same goes for the other hill squad around Vliegen or Stuyven, who get some pressure from younger riders with some strong late sprint then in de Kleijn or Ballerini.

van der Hoorn really stepped up last year as consistent rider on the cobbles and he surely is going to show that skills again, this time though with a better leader to support.

Koep just like Boom was here since the beginning and when counting the one year on loan out, he now is reaching the same numbers of season in Aegon colours next season as Boom, while Frison and Vanhoucke complete the roster.

Bilguunjargal Erdenebat73606476767672515964686877

Our biggest signing so far is Rick Zabel. Pretty unexpected, as usual, our plans changed and we are back to 2 sprinters going into the season (for now) making it a lot more fun to plan the season. The German sprinter might only be our no.2 but should be able to show up here and there.

Jesse Sergent
not really suiting our regional focus on just 4 Nations but as every year, 2-3 riders for elsewhere are with us (no loans). After having decent time trialists in the past, last year was one of the worst TT seasons for us and all his experience will help to improve in that area.

Barbin was on our long list for quite some years already but never really made it any close to sign with us. This year, we decided to do some long shots for 50k and the Italian puncheur accepted. To be honest, he is coming out of an awful year on CT level for him, but his tasks with us are mainly domestique work for De Bie. Something he clearly should be capable of.

Last but not least our first (early) loan signing this season. Just like Sergent, Erdenebat improves our TT squad by a bit and will be there for the TTTs mainly before going back to his actual team a lot stronger.

Davide Ballerini73647157737172717480747257

As ember said, an unlikely never really stops me from doing trades. And so it`s not surprising that 2/4 riders only were a clear yes with the other two being unlikely deals and then they were quickly sold.

van der Poel is a really interesting rider and with 2 Giro stage wins last year, he already showed skills unmaxed. Still quite early we decided to let him go as there is one problem with him. He would need training to really stand out in one of his main stats as it`s the brilliant balance and allround skills that makes him special. And there was no really realistic plans on saving as much money on him as he likely deserves.

Valls joined him in the deal to Mapei. The Spaniard had a few good days for us last year but now became older and not really was needed anymore. He will look for late career glory elsewhere.

Stuyven joined us last year for a minimum contract and was part of the De Bie supporting squad. He easily is replaced by Barbin this year and is going down a division for a bit more freedom.

Ballerini as next wasn`t planned before. But just like vdP he misses the real top main stat being a decent allrounder. His strength likely is in the lower divisions, which is why we accepted a deal for him.

*Thanks to knockout for the format.

@jakstar: He should have a decent schedule. Rarely doing such early loans but as TT rider and my previous team, it suited well. Until then I had no idea, I actually grab another 3 very good time trialists, so that the TTT squad is now looking very solid with him as top5 there.

@hoyle: Something I haven`t realized till you said it. But as I have seen your jersey for him already, looking forward to it really. Wink

Riders in - Update 2

Following the first four riders joining our team, couple more have done so since.
Biggest names clearly are riders that will help us immediately and might have some freedom here and there themselves.

Those are Michal Schlegel as very young but already strong prospect. He might not be from our main 4 Nations, but actually the Czech riders in our team have a long history from the very first season already including riders such as Vesely, Novak, Turek...
Gianni Vermeersch is another rider that joins. He kind of replaces the Van der Poel leaving by being a great domestique on several terrains and might even show himself here and there.
Michael Hepburn and Nico Denz joined in a deal and will strengthen our depth. First might be our best time trialist alongside Sergent forming a Oceanic duo there. Later was impressive in last years Tour of America as luxury domestique and we hope he can show this again as one of the big domestiques in 2021.
Welcome backLucas Schädlich, a former Aegon rider already. He might have declined a bit but as TTT rider, he should still give the squad a nice boost.
From FA we got 2 more Belgiums. Veteran Kevin Eeckhout and still not maxed Ludoivic Robeet were signed as domestiques for the cobbles and this makes it 4 very solid riders on that terrain helping Van Hooydonck in his aimed races, which is something, we never had before.
Last but not least a young Italian sprinter joined us on loan from Philips in Riccardo Minali. He kind of replaces a new and already outgoing sprinter, though expectations aren`t the highest that he is going to perform on the highest level yet.

Riders Out - Update 2

More riders than the recent four left the team.
Biggest name easily Rick Zabel. Yes, Zabel wasn`t part of the team for very long and not even sure it was smart to let him go again, but in the end a good swap deal was possible giving us a lot more depth and support elsewhere.
Following Stuyven also last years top domestique Loic Vliegen is leaving. Though the replacements Barbin, Schlegel and Denz still giving us enough depth there.

Future Great - yes, there is a young rider as well in my team now

The team slowly is ageing with only another level 3 rider in Vanhoucke and the team used to avoid talents in more recent years not going for the very young level 1 riders and neither a lot for level 2 riders. Even the last row of better talents around Van Hooydonck and Van der Poel was maxed by now and the team leaders are or closing to the 30 year line already.

Time for a young prospect and with a Belgium star in the making, the team decided to spend the money, that weren`t used last year at all on one talent, which leads to the team again not spending all money on riders performing in 2021 for us.

Mauri Vansevenant though definitely is worth it. He can aim in several directions but most likely he is able to replace Sean De Bie at one point becoming the teams top puncheur. As PT teams though can`t really give young talents the needed experience, he is becoming a Minion for a year. A special chef though is watching him to avoid he is getting a weight boost by being given too many bananas once there.

The full team likely has improved from last year, alone by having a good cobbler in our rows with the newly maxed Van Hooydonck plus his new support team, which no longer is just Van der Hoorn, who though was fantastic in 2020.

Other than that the top3 team leaders remain the same, De Bie and Groenewegen surely can improve from their 2020 season, while Olivier hopefully can be as strong as last year or at least remain very consistent.

Then Carboni maxed out as well giving us a decent 2nd option alongside our hybrids Zardini and Schlegel with Ciccone having just a few races himself and mainly acts as domestique.

Most important though is the improvement of our TTT squad. Instead of a Frison one-man-show (which fair enough worked out with the Belgium TT NC) he now is just the middle of our TT squad having 3 strong riders added to the squad plus Erdenebat as loanie.

23 riders for 2021. Good depth for all races. 79+ in all terrains, 80+ for all but TTs. Let`s improve from last year, hopefully no relegation danger till the end.

Van Hooydonck looks very nice maxed, the TT depth is very good and you still have reliable riders like Olivier and Groenewegen. Who knows maybe even De Bie enjoys the weaker puncheur field and has a great season Pfft

No way you are fighting relegation this season!! Grin

As you already know I love Van Hooydonck. Really looking forward to seeing how this improved roster does this year. Highly doubt that you'll be in the relegation scrap but with moving to a new game there's always that uncertainty.

Think you've done a great job in pulling the team up from near relegation to a Top 10 contender at least I think. Being another Dutch team, I off course love the Olivier - Groenewegen duo! Van Hooydonck should be a big difference maker this time. Look forward to following your season Smile
