[CT 20] Glanbia Foods Cycling Project

The Glanbia Boys are back and ready to Time Trial to an even better season than our first which saw us just miss out on promotion.

Nico Roche, James Curry and Nicholas White have been released. Curry and White were last year's draft picks while Roche's decline was just too steep this year.

The team are sticking with last year's lucky jersey.

In terms of availability Glanbia will listen to all offers although it's hard to see Sam Bennett, Freddy Cruz, Tyler Brandt or Lawson Craddock leave.

This year, secondary sponsor Aer Lingus has dropped its focus on South America so the manager has a free hand in race selection outside the core areas of Ireland, USA, Australia , Canada and New Zealand.

Had you sacked everyone below Clarke, you would've had a fantastic core and wage budget to destroy CT. Still, you should have enough money to get a big gun in to push your team over the edge and get promoted

My first season I renewed literally everyone except one guy for whatever price they wanted, including giving raises to declining domestiques under 70 OVL.

So while maybe you could have trimmed some roster fat, I wouldn't be down on yourself too much. You still have a good core and can shuffle things to make room if you need to.
RIP Exxon Duke, David Veilleux, Double Feature, and Monster Energy

Seán Downey retains the Irish Time Trial Jersey:

The new guys:

Flat 66 Cobbles 66

Mark Downey Level 1,0

Glanbia were sorely lacking in youth last year so Downey is promising (Pot 5) young Irish rider most suitable for the Northern Classics. So two birds with the one stone hopefully, youth and an option for the cobbles

With the non-renewal of Nico Roche's contract Glanbia have found a puncheur replacement in Nathan Haas

Hills 76 Stamina 76

The experienced Australian will hopefully give us options in hilly classics and go hunting stagesi.imgur.com/biYqRW7.jpg

After a frustrating search for a second sprinter Glanbia settled on (don't tell I said that) Ben King

On balance the team is slightly stronger than last year although the decline in Michael Ford is a concern fir the Time Trials.

Glanbia had hoped to strengthen further but have been frustrated in many bids for Free Agents.

The manager's mind has turned to getting the best out of the training budget with key riders all eligible for for improvement. We remain on he lookout fir any deals...in or out

Above are the Glanbia goals for the year.

Last year, we finished 9th and won Windhoek so hopefully that success can be repeated. The other goals show how much is expected of Sam Bennett this year along with his new main leadout Ben King.

The transfer season failed to land another leader so Craddock, Brandt, Cruz, Ford and Bennett will be asked to step up again.

Some serious training is going n behind the scenes....

Meanwhile no 20 for the season has been signed:

Meet the Glanbia Boys 2020.

The Time Trial core remains intact and the calendar is designed to maximise that strength but there's more than just Time Trialers here.

A lot is expected of Lawson Craddock this year. Some training on his Mountain skills means he's a real threat in any week long race especially if there's a Time Trial.

This year he will be focusing on as many of these small Tours as he can. Glanbia are looking for him to be a consistent Top 3 and Top 5 in the GC>

For the Sprints Glanbia look to Irish hero Sam Bennett. He has worked on his hills so that he can be in the mix when it really counts. Classics and flat tours will be his area.

Tour of America specialist Tyler Brandt returns as the climbing leader although he is no slouch against the clock.

Glanbia prides itself on being an all-round team with a Time Trialing spirit but I have to admit our sprint and climbing leaders are asked to do a lot without lieutenants.

Let's look at that Time Trial strength. Michael Ford has lost a touch of speed but With Irish TT champ Seán Downey, Windhoek champion Freddy Cruz and Aggrey Sebright the Glanbia Time Trail threat remains real.

January Plans:

Glanbia are very disappointed to see the team haven't been selected for the Tour of California later in the year so our one and only HC race is our first- The Down Under Classic.

The Sam Bennett-Ben King pairing will have their first outing and will finish the month with another Classic with the Great Ocean Road Classic. Hopefully it will be a month well spent Down Under.

The only other two races will see new Hilly Classics leader Nathan Haas tested in the GP Yekatinburg and the Gisborne GP. Yekatinburg will also see the debuts of Seán Hahessy, Mark Downey and Pier Andre Cote. Tyler Brandt, Paddy Clarke and Connor McConvey should give Haas a respectable level of support.

The team will be happy with any top tens with Bennett in the Great Ocean Road being our best bet for a podium

Ras Tailteann is a goal for McCormick as well although not a win.

Surprised the Vilnius TTT not among your goals.

Good luck with the season.

Early January Report:

January, what a bloody awful month. The darkness, the despair, and the weather is bad too!

Well, for Glanbia the weather was fine because it was mainly spent in Australia but the results were as gloomy as January in Edinburgh. Down Under is a key region for our sponsors and they won’t have liked what they saw.

Things begin Australia with the Down Under Classic. the team have been cruelly snubbed for the Tour of California so this is the only HC race of the season. The flat Classic will be an interesting test for the new sprinting partnership of Sam Bennett and Ben King. King has been signed this year as number two to Bennett.

Test failed!

The Glanbia sprinters disappeared without a trace with King 36th and Bennett not even touching the top 50.

Manager MacC chose to be philosophical in the aftermath:

“Look, it was a HC race with top class opposition so it was always a big ask. I am not going to write off the Bennett/King duo yet and nobody else should either”

.........Meanwhile in a frosty Yekaterinburg,..

Glanbia’s new Puncher leader Nathan Haas begins his Glanbia adventure.

Over rolling hills he isn’t able to stay with the best and can only manage 25th place and one point. Like our sprinters there are warning signs that Glanbia will not be competitive unless there is a Time Trial,,..
