Haven’t seen anything from Dygert, but Simmons’ comments... just show how naive he still is.

What did they post? If its only about supporting Trump I don't see the issue, it's still a democracy and people are free to express their opinion and should not be sanctioned by their employer.

btw If Trek take sanction against Simmons and critize Trump he won't hurt their sales imho. I don't think trump voters would buy quality trek bikes, just like no old trumpists buy nikes.

Of course I see no issue in stating their political beliefs, but Simmons started somehow a row/beef with a few Twitter users. I mean, as a professional rider bound to have media attention, that is not an attitude to have. Some of those tweets seem to have been deleted, though.

Here's some of the Dygert stuff I found with a brief search on Twitter, not sure if there's more.

I'm always having trouble ascribing that stuff to naiveté. There are plenty of naive people who don't support an open fascist. Granted, Simmons might just think he's unbeatable right now and feels "edgy" or something, but it's good that he gets some pushback (not that you said it wasn't). If it's really just "stupid young people talk", then this gives him the opportunity to grow. Guess we won't find out until a few years from now how deep this goes for him.

Seems to me like other people are just posting anti-trump stuff, and he reacts to it. Can't say what kind of posts were deleted but like you say, I don't think that athletes should be forbidden to share their political views. God knows every movie actor and actress does it 100x more.

... which is kind of the point, isn't it? How far off the deep end does a politician have to go until supporting him no longer is just a different opinion but an active attack on the rights of those who are threatened by said politician? In my opinion, Trump passed that point a long, long, long time ago. But this is not the politics thread, I suppose.

Good reply from Trek indeed. I would say supporting Trump is becoming less and less acceptable, but it doesn't make Simmons a neo-nazi. Just a confused little boy. Like that German kid we used to have here.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

I have American friends at exactly Quinn's age that are heavily affected by many Drumpf and GOP policies and potential plans for the next term.
Anyone within voting age doesn't get any excuse of that kind anymore in my eyes when the disregard for fellow citizens becomes that apparent.

If his peers' lives can be destroyed by what he supports, he better grow up and make up his mind quick, else I'm completely fine with portraying him as an enemy.

Yeah, pretty much this. I also would have been much more pleased if Trek's response wasn't about talking with Simmons about "appropriate tone" but more about the dangers and consequences of fascism. But I guess it is pretty emblematic that that is the point they're focussing.

Seems like he's a pretty freaking stupid kid who should learn to keep his mouth shut. On that end his team and agent definitely need to set him straight.

But please remember that people are encultured to believe certain things as they grow up. These things become fundamental truths to the person that are hard to undo. Half my country supports Donald Trump, as ridiculous as that might seem from the outside. It's very common and expected in some parts of the country. He's an edgy 19 year old who might have been fed this BS from adults he respects his entire life. I think most of us could be brainwashed in similar ways, and plenty of people are. If we asked some Colombian cyclists about their political and social beliefs, I reckon we might be similarly shocked.

That being said, I'm not excusing him at all. He could also really be a piece of crap who has consciously accepted and promoted bigoted beliefs. Colorado isn't exactly a Republican stronghold, that the lends evidence to this theory.

To Shonak's point, I wouldn't be so sure that Trek coming down hard on Simmons wouldn't hurt their sales - that is, if people actually find out about it at all. Road bikes are expensive - a luxury item. Who's going to buy an expensive road bike in America, where cycling is not popular? A super enthusiast (rare), or somebody with money who is vaguely interested and uses it for fitness. Upper middle class 40-something's might be a significant portion of Trek's high end customers in America. People with money in America tend to vote Republican.

Suspended by Trek now. For supporting the incumbent president. Uhm... so much for a good reaction to this lol seems like cancel culture hit him.

Err... no, he's been fired for being outwardly racist on multiple occasions.

There's a reason Dygert-Owen has not been fired. She supports Tump yes, but has not been publicly racist on multiple occasions.

If you're racist should will get called out and should face the consequences.

A wider example, NASCAR: Most of that group is openly Trump and Republican supporters, however only Kyle Larsson got fired because he was openly racist.

Imo I don't think Trek suspended him solely for that tweet. Reading between the lines there seems to be some pattern of misconduct or attitude. At the very least he may not be super popular amongst (some of) his team mates.

Now he tweets something that is contested and for a team that has a sponsor who has been in hot water for supplying police with bikes (which in itself is a tad ludacrous) is perhaps pushing it too far.

To be brutally honest, he seems no different to a run-of-the-mill, cocky 19 year old. He has "controversial" political views and he made an error of judgement. That being said, he's not in a first year college course. He's in professional cycling. In any professional world, your expressions can and likely will have consequences. Using a black emoji relating to a politically-charged tweet is stupid. In a hyper-sensitive political environment and as a professional, it's probably not in your best career interests to voice controversial opinion.

I hate having to say that last statement, because I am a massive propopent of free speech.
