Some thoughts:
- It wasn't the smartest finish of course, downhill and very narrow. As I said earlier, I'm thinking it was meant to be wider originaly but some space was cut to make room for the safety of the riders (oh, irony). I'm not going to say no to a downhill sprint all together, but the road needs to be at least 3x as wide if you want to do that.
- Groenewegen did that move on purpose, and not the first time he does it either (ask Naesen). Of course he didn't want Jakobsen to crash let alone suffer these horrible injuries, but he's responsible for it.
- There should be a suspension here and 1 month isn't going to cut it. Of course like it is now 3 month = season over. But in my opinion UCI needs to set an example that this is unacceptable.

Terrible crash. Reminds of when Sagan got disqualified from the tour for taking Cavendish out a few years ago, only much worse.

Well if that's true, there goes any possible sympathy anyone might have had for him. Talk about a dick move. Wouldn't be surprised if any potential ban is increased as he has clearly shown a complete lack of remorse/concern for Jacobson.

 hopefully. His exclamation mark at the end of the sentence threw me  . I did think there was no way Dylan would be racing anywhere.
But then thought he might be trying to race before a ban is imposed.

Afaik if a rider abandons a race he can not join another race until his abandoned race concludes.

I agree that we shouldn't be judging the action from the result. But truth is we kind of have to. Like in driving accidents, it's a difference between only damaging a car and actually inflicting injuries to another person.
And you are right. We've seen worse maneuvers than that in sprints. Gronenewegen didn't push Jakobsen into the barriers like people make it out to be. He did change his line drastically to block Jakobsen from overtaking him. That elbow you see is Groenewegen trying himself to stay on the bike just like Sagan appeared to be elbowing Cavendish in that crash, while he was just trying to maintain his equilibrium.
I think that Groenewegen should be facing some other type of punishment than just disqualification from this race. But claiming he should be banned for life or wanting to press criminal charges is silly.
I think maneuvers should always result in disqualification from the race, to encourage them from happening as they usually just end with a disqualification from the sprint if nothing major happens because of it.
If it doesn't always result in disqualification, you end up basing the punishment on the affected rider's ability and luck to avoid the rider doing the dangerous maneuver instead of the maneuver itself.

The only precedent that I know of is Theo Bos, who got a 1-month ban after causing a crash with dangerous behaviour. That would be huge for 2020 though, as it's such a short season.
Of course there has been multiple times a rider was DQ'd for irregular sprinting, without them receiving any ban. |
