We had certainly hoped for more, but I guess Phinney wasn't on a top, top day. Still another stage win from him, but in order to keep yellow all the way to Paris, I think he would've needed more. Two tough finishes coming up now, so hopefully he can hang on to Madrazo and enter the Alps in yellow.
Stake Laengen did great again. Thought Würtz would do better reading down the report, but I guess it's just a bit silly how tough these TTs get after a while in a stage race. That being said, it was another FANTASTIC report. Thank you for all your effort, Cunego!

Interesting to see Phinney "only" gain 20 seconds on Madrazo there. Just less than a minute will never be a comfortable lead for the American, eventhough he has been very impressive so far this Tour on the difficult stages.
Having the Vuelta and the Giro in mind, I'm curious to see how the proper mountain stages are played here. Tourmalet on the next stage should be a good indicator. If Phinney holds on and doesn't show any weakness, he must fancy his chances to keep yellow all the way to Paris.
Galta squeezing inside the top 10 is nice, but seeing how close it is from 9th to 13th, a top 10 finish will be just as difficult as expected pre-race. Joining a successful breakaway in the final week still feels like the key to make a top 10 here. |

Must admit, I had higher expectations for Paillot here.
Strong TT with decent mo/hi as well and apparently having saved energy by supporting Groenewegen on the mountains, which is a slower pace than he should be able to go.
Though apparently not his day and flat TT in general.
Dekker with a nice ride though and Velits did okay as well. So can`t complain even though later now is maybe too well placed for breakaways but in huge danger to lose some spots by several others behind him doing so. |

Very happy with that TT result! Madrazo did well to lose only 20 seconds, grab some nice stage points and pass Sicard in GC. Honourable mention to Bibby and his top 10 performance here. Also interesting that Morton and Dombrowski managed to limit their losses; they continue to be dangerous outsiders with their excellent climbing skills.
Alright Angel, this is your chance. You've survived tons of stages that could have been a liability and now you enter the mountains with the yellow jersey within a minute's reach. Yes, Phinney is a strong rider, but you have 2 MO and 6 RES on him. Use the long climbs to drain him. Don't let Sicard's shenanigans distract you. Just set a consistent murderous pace and choke them.

Had I known that Vlatos wouldn’t manage to finish inside top 150 in a flat ITT like this I wouldn’t have selected him - no matter the TTT... Horrible stuff...
In general very small gaps compared to similar TT’s throughout the season where some riders would lose 10+ minutes on a course like this. So it doesn’t really add much value for Lecuisinier to do this well...
Oh well, we can still look up hopefully!

A very good result from Dombrowski. Losing little over a minute to Phinney here is basically no lose at all. Let's see some fireworks in the mountains now!

Oh my sweet summer child cunego, you think a 5 minute loss bothers me?
If anything, this gives Arndt more freedom to attack. Preferably from tomorrow on!
45 to Sicard, 49 to Phinney, 70 to Madrazo. Breakaways please!
Tourmalet shouldn't be too hard and the stage short enough to help a break conserve enough energy to keep the favorites at bay if nobody chases super hard.

I mean, yeah, I thought you would have hoped for better than fourth-to-last from your GC captain, but the way you put it does make some sense I guess

Wow those TT results are nuts! AC did well out of it for =5th, but then to see the far superior flat TT'er Sergent so far down (and Hepburn and Quaade and Postl etc. being so far off their teammate) you know something else was going on for this stage. Also Kristin putting in a nice appearence, and i continue to remind people this female is kicking quite a few riders butts

Arndt is here as a Demare leadout and stage/KoM hunter, the GC captain thing is accidental.
Plus, just a third place on one stage is the difference between 15th and 22nd in GC...

With two of three weeks done, here’s another overview of the stage winners, jerseys and team goals:
| Stage Winner | | | | | 1 | Stauff | Stauff | Stauff | Sanogo | Sanogo | 2 | Demare | Demare | Demare | Yzeiraj | Lopez | 3 | Demare | Demare | Demare | Yzeiraj | Lopez | 4 | Sicard | Demare | Demare | Brown | Lopez | 5 | Grieg - Maersk | Sicard | Demare | Brown | Ndayisenga | 6 | Morton | Phinney | Demare | Vosekalns | Lopez | 7 | Samolenkov | Phinney | Demare | Vosekalns | Lopez | 8 | Phinney | Phinney | Demare | Brenes | Lopez | 9 | Smit | Phinney | Demare | Brenes | Lopez | 10 | Demare | Phinney | Demare | Brenes | Lopez | 11 | Groenewegen | Phinney | Demare | Brenes | Lopez | 12 | Hacecky | Phinney | Demare | Brenes | Lopez | 13 | Phinney | Phinney | Demare | Brenes | Lopez | 14 | Madrazo | Phinney | Demare | Brenes | Lopez |
Talk about stability when it comes to the jerseys - none of them have changed hands for a whole week!

Velits and Dekker in the break. On a first note, this looked perfect and seeing Velits kind of holding on until the end, moving up, it seems to have been a good stage.
But in fact, not too sure actually as this did cost lots of energy for almost no points if at all.
In especially the moment quite early still when the peloton was not far behind but Velits started to go into the wind instead of being pulled by Dekker, he basically stopped taking advantage of having a 78 mo climber with him. So next stages will tell how smart this was today.
Thanks for the report and Madrazo really showed strength here even though those 4s left from Phinney might see him giving him another performance.
Denifl/Morton again quite strong with Dombrowski surprisingly weak with Lecuisinier just doing Lecuisinier things in GTs being consistent top5 material.
Sicard on the other hand surprisingly low, just like Schleck really. |

Another good stage by Phinney, but it's clear that Madrazo is the best climber. At least we kept yellow for another day, and most importanly we gained time on our other rivals. The podium is the realistic target now, with three MTF still to come. Looked like Phinney paced himself very good, that's always good to see. Brilliant ride by Nesset as well, and all in all a good day in the team classification.
It's been great to be in yellow for nine days, but I think it's time for Madrazo tomorrow. Congrats on the stage win, DD!

Gregory, can you please not attack for just one stage so you don’t die please?
Congrats DD on the win, Madrazo by and large the best climber here for sure.

A typically fighting performance from Velits, glad the jump across games didn't change his spirit. Also typical in that he gets caught on the final climb by better riders, but a lot of respect and love for him either way As roturn said time will tell if it was a good move in the long run, couldn't quite pull of the Galta-2018-esque ride he might have been aiming for. Hopefully he can do well tomorrow then recover energy heading into the Alps and keep fighting in those high 10-20 places, good stuff so far.

Welp, this was about as bad as it could've been...besides Sicard dropping, I guess.
I can only hope this is actually going to end up detrimental for Madrazo and Phinney by increasing the gap to the future breakaway riders.
Tomorrow has two long descents for the break to recharge, so this one REALLY looks good for them.
Then we need to outscore Phinney in the flat and hilly stages and catch at least one of those breaks.

Nice to see lopez in the break and looking arguably the strongest of the escapees but the gc teams wouldnt allow a break win today which is okay. His gc situation looks okay but it seems like he also targets the kom which would be great. he needs to join the next breaks on high mountain stages for it to make some sense.

Great reports cunego, shame about our performance. Enjoying reading along, even if motivation to post continues to drop as this nightmare of a season for us continues along. |

Solid result for Morton, even though it ain't perfect to lose time on Denifl. Phinney/Madrazo probably out of reach already, so it's about securing this podium spot and as for this, the stage went quite well, I guess. Slightly concerned by the performance form Smith though.
