News in January

Still writing on a 2019 thread? Let's start a new one for the new year, but wondering if is not the case to merge more than a month with the next ones, seeing the few pages in recent past...

Then, one of the usual news at the beginning of the year, Tour wildcards given to French teams Arkea and B&B VC, no Wanty for 2020, a kind of expected with the loss of Martin...

Bakelants to Wanty, glad to see he's not forced to retire yet.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Let's hope that 2020 will be a more active year.

As much as I thought B&B VC would have deserved a wildcard last year, I think they do not deserve it this year.

Actually, I don’t see any other teams that could fit on their spot, rather than Wanty/whatever their 2020 name is. Losing Martin was a blow, they don’t have any major or “exciting French prospect” in the squad, though Vital Concept also have a very average team, the weight the names Coquard and Rolland carry were enough for 2019 and thus are enough to deserve a wildcard this year. My thoughts. Pfft

imo B&B VC has one of the best squad among conti Pro teams, with french guys like Coquard, Rolland, Gautier, Vichot and furthermore they added Debusschere and Slagter, with a lot of experience in WT. I think the WC is deserved not just because being a french team
obviously, Wanty and Alpecin-Fenix have also a good team but I don't feel a bad choice by TdF to invite B&B VC

All of them have decent teams, so I don't mind them picking the frenchies. in my opinion Vuelta is worse, vdPoel wants to ride there but they're going for the smaller Spanish teams, which aren't nearly as good.

Blame it on the stupid Wildcard-Rules of the UCI. I can fully understand those choices both by Vuelta and Tour organizers, imo it's the right decision.

Already in a 3 week race?
I don't think he will do great, but he surprised me before.

I have no clue either how he will handle it, I just hope they don't burn him too soon. I remember GVA so exhausted after his first Vuelta, it cost him a few years of his career to recover from it.

Tadej Pogacar finished 3rd at the Vuelta last year at the age of 20, so he's got that to measure himself against I suppose.

I guess technology has improved so doctors can find more minute problems. The risk may be very small, but given that he's already in his late 30s he probably just thinks there is no point taking the risk.

My dad used to race in the 70s. Not as a pro or anything. Years later he had a minor stroke and during the tests the doctors found a small hole in his heart. If he had been a pro in 2020, the doctors would probably advise him to stop racing.

Hasn’t Kiryienka been diagnosed with cardiac issues in the past? I remember he started competition later than usual due to some issue (edit: confirmed it was last year), so wouldn’t be too surprised. I believe it’s what ringo said.

Nice video about Anemieck Van Vleuten in the men's training camp at Mitchelton Scott. Looks to be series following her throughout the season.

Ineos have signed triathlete Cameron Wurf. Guess that's to replace Kiryienka.
