Sagan wishes he was this important! Although the actual reason seems to be a touch complex, or at least no yet publicly known.

You will see a lot of people claim it is due to the new Californian law that requires sporting events to offer equal prize money for Mens and Womens events.
However, AToC, already did this for the 2019 race. So it seems unlikely to be the primary reason for the 'hiatus'. That said it's no secret ASO doesn't actually want to support womens cycling so if they do give this as the reason I won't be surprised.

Like with the other USA races that have disappeared, it's more likely to be an overall lack of sponsorship $. Especially, I think, for a race as long as it is and in a state like California it really can't be cheap to run.
Whilst a relatively well known race to us more hard-core fans, it's wider appeal is not that big post-Armstrong and against the Giro it's competing with. Hopefully it will come back in 2021, maybe with an adjusted date or reduced length, to help it's future stability.

I always say America is similar to Britain in cycling terms. No real cycling history but a golden generation that stirred up interest in the sport for a period. The US have now lost their golden generation (due to a fair bit of controversy) and so the interest has dropped. Something similar may happen in Britain, but hopefully we are close enough the the major cycling cultures of Europe for the interest to remain at a decent level for years to come.

It seems a simplistic reasoning, but you get $ from sponsors mainly if top stars are racing, and you take visibility, it's a bit of a coincidence that this happens right after Sagan confirms Giro participation. And if you look at AToC past startlists they weren't very glorious...
In any case is a big loss for me, because I always really enjoied stages from this tour.

AIGCP, the interest group of cycling teams, have written an open letter to the UCI in which they express their discontent with the UCI. They address several topics like safety as well as commercial interference and the governance of the UCI in general.

In regard to the above concerns the AIGCP invites the UCI to enter into a dialogue in order to establish the following in regard to men’s professional road cycling:

1. Increase the level and consistency of the race referees and their decisions.
2. Main focus of UCI as governing body to centre around license procedures, including for race organisers, very strict quality criteria for riders’ safety.
3. Maintain the original balance between (WorldTour) teams and organisers; 4-year licenses including participation in the Tour de France versus an obligation to race in a total of 154 WorldTour days, no further indirect mechanisms to unbalance that and/or to limit the team’s right to choose where to race (beyond the WorldTour).
4. The stakeholders – teams and their riders (together with the race organisers) – to obtain a formal and relevant say in the decision-making process of men’s professional road cycling such that their voice cannot be ignored.
5. The UCI, as a governing body, to not use its regulatory powers to interfere in the commercial domain and/or not to compete with its own stakeholders in the commercial domain.
6. Agreement on what total financial contribution the UCI should require from men’s professional road cycling for its overall functioning as governing body. Then the stakeholders to decide how to fund that amount which is to be paid to the UCI.

The letter is pretty fierce...

Saudi race goes well, AToC quietly never comes back. Saudi race goes poorly, AToC comes back.

They have Sagan and Ackermann, they surely don't need a replacement. Especially with Sagan riding two GTs.
