Hm yeah one would think that is indeed the case. It is very good that Barguil has managed to get 10th in the end, I hope this gives him some wings for the coming months to train hard to get back to the top. His potential in 2017 was almost on Julian's level and above Bardet and Pinot at that point. Looks how it all changed fairly quickly with the french. Meanwhile, Pinot has already stated he would be back for more next year: That would be a comeback, I already start dreaming about it. Tibopino, lone warrior against the best of Ineos of 4 grand tour winners.
I am quite disappointed that Konrad was not more help to Buchmann. He should have been co-leader and was nowhere in most stages. Muhlberger was Buchmann's only help really in the high mountains. I think Konrad still has some long way to go but I hope that he gets there, in the youth days I think he was a regular competitior to the Yates and look where they are now.
The gap after Richie Porte is really significant, 10 minutes. 11th sorta is okay for him, hope he can get at least his stage race mojo back next year. Richie Porte killing it in Paris-Nice and other races was quite entertaining when he was with BMC. I havnt seen many stage races this year but guys like Contador and in-form Richie may even be missing in those more than in GTs bc contador also pulled lots of crazy stuff in stage races, especially paris-nice and the spanish ones, and tirreno, and and..
Also, looking forward to seeing more of Bernal now really. The third week was really good and he is kinda sympathetic, more than many other south americans like henao or quintana, but not quite as charismatic as Carapaz at this point, and certainly not MAL with his sorta strange behaviour, crashprone racing, yojoing, fanslapping and shenanings. Anyway,congratulations to Bernal, well done and well deserved. This is surely just the first of many. At least he is not an Armstrong or Froome.exe.

Almost forgot: Really good Tour all in all for my man Landismo after having the Giro in his legs. Both GTs without bad luck, especially Tour couldnt have been much better if he hadn lost those two minutes but he was also missing the legs in the decisive moments then. Despite the Giro he was still regularly climbing with the best but despite his many attacks, I was also missing the wow factor a bit on those days. Landani not getting a stage win was also quite disappointing but he is pretty bad at stage hunting tbh, evidently seen in his many tries in the Sky jersey in the Giro e.g. He was very good at it at Astana. So, if he leaves Movistar, I would wish that he goes back there, to Astana. He was by far the most fun climber version of himself there and got the most wins out of it. However, I wouldnt mind him staying at Movistar since the climbing support is still some of the best there. Hopefully he can win a GT next year then, Giro is probably the better option in that case.

The most anticlimactic end to the best Tour of the decade. Pinot abandoning and this sad and lame final stage leaves asking for more.
Some notes:
- Ineos was, if you ignore this last stage, weaker than ever before. The Sky train was rarely seen. Only Bernal and Thomas kept the typical superiority.
- Alaphilippe was monstruously impressive
- Pinot, after his late pneumonia in last year's Giro loses another massive chance for a GT podium on account of injury/ilness.
- Movistar continues to make a joke of themselves
- Bernal has come of age. If he stays with Ineos for long we're going to have to wait ages for another Tour like this.

Just caught up with the highlights. France's Tour fell apart more spectacularly than an England World Cup campaign. Quite surprised that no-one tried anything today. It was almost as if as soon as Alaphilippe got dropped everyone else was happy with their final place.
Overall it was a bit anticlimactic, but the strongest rider overall won. Going to be interesting at Ineos next year with Froome, Thomas, Bernal and Carapaz. What do you reckon the odds on an all Ineos podium would be.

And then Carapaz riding for the Vuelta with Bernal or Thomas.

I never really bought into Barguil as a legitimate GT contender. I know he's a l'Avenir winner and he came out the gate well, but does it feel to anyone like he's actually improved the last 5 years? If anything, those first couple of Vuelta's might have been his best GT's besides the 2017 Tour. He's a stage hunter and KOM guy, period, and he could be very good at that. The next generation David Moncoutie. But he will never be a top 5 GC guys and I think that's been obvious since like 2015-2016.

Dan Martin has some secret reason apparently not related to form that held him back in this year's Tour and made him bonk in the final every day. Or so he says. It could be BS, but he says he's discussed it with the team and it will be released soon.
Don't know what it could be except nutrition considering he seems to blame the team, that's what usually causes the lights to keep going out. Or it could be some bad blood bags.
In any case, maybe on his way out of UAE considering the tension between him and the team.

It was an exciting situation going into these three last mountain stages, but sadly we are left underwhelmed, mostly we have to blame it on freak weather, I guess, plus poor Pinot dropping out. It was the best possible call on stage 19 and the super short stage 20 looked like it might be fun, but apparently they were all spent. I agree that the Tour is worst when it comes to riders being happy with a decent result rather than going for more and risking to fall back.
I had feared another Skineos dominance and was totally wrong, Kwiatkowski surely deserves a special mention in that regard. And yet they make it a 1-2. Bernal that good at 22, I guess we have to hope he burns out quickly. Winning the biggest price that early in his career must surely help.

Well they never really had to in the end because they had the 1-2 in the pocket. But I think that if they really wanted it yesterday, Thomas could've paced for Bernal and Bernal would have got a very convincing stage win.

There isn't another choice there really... I like TdG, but he didn't break away as much this year (he should have won in '16), I guess only Wellens or maybe Nibali could get it with their breakaways, but in the end Alaphilippe made this TDF what it was, and therefore he deserves to be on the podium in Paris. The ovation he will get will be nuts! |
