Honestly expecting I bit more from Miguel Indurain, Vuelta a la Rioja was a nice consolation though.

Expected more from both races to be perfectly honest. Rioja had a weak field but we messed up our sprint preparation. Indurain had a very strong field compared to previous years and our top riders are focusing on other goals this year, hence why it's not that strange we have been underperforming as of late. Wink

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/fkEZFy5.png
No extensive break of the day this year as only three riders composed it: Maurits Lammertink, Casper Pedersen and top sprinter Jakub Mareczko. They started the first Oude Kwaremont climb with an advantage of 7'40".
i.imgur.com/dTarO7V.png
It took 100kms and the riders' second arrival at the Oude Kwaremont for something interesting to finally happen. LottoNL's Niki Terpstra lured the rest out with an early acceleration; Cortes tried to get the man's wheel.
i.imgur.com/6PPUk33.png
Terpstra's aim was to catch the break as quickly as possible, and Cortes could not match his pace on the Paterberg. Soon top riders like Spengler, Lutsenko, Senechal and Benoot caught up with our young Brazilian man.
i.imgur.com/yJAiUA6.png
The ultra steep Koppenberg was put to good use by the chasers, of which a trio reeled in Niki Terpstra. Leaving the cobbles of the Steenbeekdries, Cortes was part of a 7-man chasers group that was riding 14" in arrears.
i.imgur.com/UVz3tLq.png
On a flat section, two men were dropped from the chasing group. Cortes was dropped from the E2 with the other four on the verge of catching up.
i.imgur.com/ZYfmrGa.png
As soon as the first two groups merged, the pace dropped a bit. Unaware of the time difference, Cortes started to gain ground on the race leaders whilst dealing with the Kruisberg. Much left to be played in the last 25km.
i.imgur.com/gP4Jbeq.png
The group at the front was about to become 12 when they hit the Oude Kwaremont for the third and final time. Those who had only just bridged would lose contact again right away, including our Ednaldo Luiz Cortes.
i.imgur.com/ricFgJL.png
Over the last Paterberg - difficulty, the group of the strongest was down to Terpstra, Spengler, Keukeleire, Senechal, Helling, Benoot & Lutsenko.
i.imgur.com/VYQgrZc.png
Jasper Stuyven joining allowed his teammate Benoot, victor of last year's edition, to try an attack. Lukas Spengler made sure he couldn't get away.
i.imgur.com/aMZhOHJ.png
The only duo to get away inside the last 5km was Terpstra and Senechal.
i.imgur.com/42Jllxw.png
They threw away a promising gap of 18" by speculating a little too much, which forced the two to launch early with stronger sprinters catching up.
i.imgur.com/Ir4n8O5.png
Keukeleire had the edge for most of the last meters, but Benoot's timing was slightly better. As the Belgian champion achieved back to back wins, Keukeleire and Stuyven completed a fully Belgian podium. Niki Terpstra, probably the strongest man in today's race, had to settle for an 8th spot.
i.imgur.com/zFqTEVu.png
Cortes had to dig deep near the end. He eventually came home in 15th.

It's certainly put pressure on the riders that are now on my cobbles squad, given the results he achieved last year. Especially Cortes is, despite being a more gifted cobbler than Lature, struggling to live up to the expectations. Not that his results are bad for a 20 y/o though, he's just developing at his own pace.

Stage 1/6, 164.9 kms
i.imgur.com/pzUn9yP.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/TfUyLU1.png
Two breakaway groups had been reeled in by the time the peloton hit the penultimate climb. Bahrain started putting down the hammer with still 50 kilometers to go. A group of sixteen broke clear, with none of us present.
i.imgur.com/tgt0SL9.png
It took hard labour to chase them down, yet everything would come back together before the second climb of Alto del Vivero. Something had to be done about Bahrain's dominance, and Poels did attack 2km from the top.
i.imgur.com/MFj7wE4.png
The Dutchman's move was not quite successful, which allowed teammate Gregor Mühlberger to try too. By the time the Austrian Lombardia winner was nearing the top, however, he'd seen Bahrain's Valérien Galtier fly by.
i.imgur.com/Q8CpLV4.png
Despite a well-organised chase, Galtier's time gap - 50" on the top - kept growing. Whilst Mühlberger was caught, Galtier took 1'45" with 2km left.
i.imgur.com/gWBvP2L.png
Galtier celebrating his dominant victory in the streets of Bilbao cost him a handful of seconds, but the gap remained very promising. Our leaders, who all suffered, were rather lucky to finish with the reduced pack today.

God to hear that the riders made it with the binch, but hardly a sign we will see 2017 level result.

Fingers crossed for a better day coming.

Could be all they need was to get a bit of a warm up, but as usual no easy stages in the Basque Country. Hopefully Bahrain will cut us some slack on the next days. Wink

Stage 2/6, 175.8 kms
i.imgur.com/LhZsDNz.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/rMfLIs4.png
It took countless shots, but Davide Villella eventually broke clear on the cat.1 Alto de Orduña. He had put 2 minutes into the pack on the summit.
i.imgur.com/y7fPYze.png
Even with ColoQuick's Sindre Lunke joining, their advantage would never grow much bigger. The leaders were already caught 45 km from the line.
i.imgur.com/gazRyOn.png
Bahrain set a ridiculously high pace going up the final climb, which again resulted in our men in green being forced away from the fore in no time.
i.imgur.com/jjaMpcR.png
Guerreiro, currently struggling because of the fast racing, did a best job leading Chávarri and Barbero back to the front. The question remained - how much had that climb, conquered at a high pace, taken out of 'em?
i.imgur.com/EQDZ1v1.png
As soon as he could properly launch, Michael Matthews clearly proved to be the strongest of the peloton. Pello Bilbao was our top finisher in 8th.

Vuelta al País Vasco (2.UWT) i.imgur.com/zMBJxFz.png
Stage 3/6, 175.5 kms
i.imgur.com/3vHzze8.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/VjNQEY4.png
Having spent about 130 km in a breakaway with Hugh Carthy that Dayer was dropped from, Sindre Lunke was passed by Terhome and Nerz. With 20 km and two more climbs left, the duo out front had 45" on the bunch.
i.imgur.com/AKvUJl7.png
Right at the foot of the penultimate climb, a mass crash took out tens of riders. Pello, probably our best man in the race so far, was involved too.
i.imgur.com/2rwyAGU.png
With the camera focussing on the crash, attention was drawn away from GC action. In that matter, four riders attacked on that last but one climb. Julian Alaphilippe followed Adam Yates, Tim Wellens, Gregor Mühlberger. Meanwhile Teshome had gotten rid of Nerz, putting 1'25" into these four.
i.imgur.com/R83n1aU.png
Terhome's pace on the brutal Alto de la Antigua was just a tad too low to keep the chasers from reeling him in. Except for Mühlberger, who had to let go on the final hectometers of the climb. Four contenders for the win.
i.imgur.com/HShIcz5.png
Despite his crash, Bilbao managed to approach the top of the last climb sitting just outside the best 10 close to Ruben Guerreiro and Chávarri.
i.imgur.com/QUuLmNw.png
Out front, Alaphilippe didn't even wait for the sprint, as he used the short descent towards the finish to his advantage. He'd put 23" into the others.
i.imgur.com/IZAxNat.png
Whilst still building up form, Ruben did finish as the best of our team in 12th place. Only a severely awarded time gap kept him out of the top 10.

Stage 4/6, 152.1 kms
i.imgur.com/Jmqxlx7.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/M9jkbAV.png
Dayer Quintana was the strongest in the break along with Hugh Carthy. They couldn't fight for the stage though, and were caught with 35km left.
i.imgur.com/BD2y7yp.png
On the last climb before the intermediate sprint, four men attacked. Juan Pardo, Jakob Fugslang & Stefano Nardelli made George Bennett struggle.
i.imgur.com/QsBrufg.png
Pardo was the last man of the group to be caught, close to the commonly included Usartza climb. Leader Alaphilippe had two more guys in support.
i.imgur.com/PApF0Oi.png
As soon as Simon Yates accelerated, Alaphillipe showed unexpected signs of weakness. Wout Poels left him behind too whilst closing in on S. Yates.
i.imgur.com/8JQnXIk.png
Guerreiro had to let several riders go too, going up the climb at his own pace. He did maintain hope of improving his position in the overall today.
i.imgur.com/x5Mezli.png
Apart from Poels, nobody came even close to Simon Yates. He was not a match for the Brit in a sprint though. Simon got his second win this year.

As Alaphillipe could afford to lose more than 50", Ruben didn't make the top 10 this time either. He did pass two rivals to grab 10th in GC for now.

Certainly a hard pill to swallow, getting forced out of contention in his home race because of a crash... Hopefully he won't be affected too much and he can help Ruben on the upcoming stage, which is very though near the end.

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/V3dxeRk.png
Sindre Lunke entered the 5-man breakway with the intention of securing his mountain jersey, and he would succeed in doing so. Atop the longest climb of today, he and Lorenzo Rota had their time advantage at 1'45". A triple ascent of Alto de Aia (2x short, 2 km side) still awaited the peloton.
i.imgur.com/97uGa4W.png
Bahrain made sure the escapees were reeled in, then kept pacing on the first of three climbs. The main victim was their own rider Valérien Galtier, who's very likely to lose both lots of time and his best young rider jersey.

Trying to take back more time on Alaphilippe, Simon Yates reacted when Dombrowski attacked on the penultimate climb; the race leader followed.
i.imgur.com/vLoVCvl.png
Merhawi Kudus caught up as well, meaning the lead group had two riders endangering Ruben's spot. Mühlberger, A.Yates at 28", Ruben at 1'28".

Alaphilippe clearly had the upper hand when climbing the shorter side of the climb for the second time. He made the others crack while Guerreiro had a good climb further back. He took back time on everyone but Julian.

Alaphilippe took a dominant win, ensuring he'll tackle tomorrow's TT with a lead of about 3 minutes. Kudus finishing 2nd was bad news for Ruben.

The latter did have one of his stronger showings of the season though. A good ride on the last climb had him catch up with Gregor Mühlberger and gain 3 spots in the overall standings, as he outclimbed a few contenders.

Exactly, big move in the GC with a time trial that should suit him on the final day. Smile
