UEFA League of Nations 2018-20
ringo182
Tonight sees the start of the new UEFA Nation of Leagues competition?

What do you make of the competition? Personally I see it as good on one hand as it means more competitive(ish) football rather than loads of meaningless friendlies.

In the other hand I see it as turning into a bit of a farce as teams use it as an easier route to qualify for the Euros. It will make it easier for teams like Wales and Poland to manipulate the rankings system to give them a better chance of qualifying for future tournaments.

There are 4 places at the Euro's in 2020 up for grabs within this tournament. At the end of the main Euro's qualification competition, the top four teams in each League who have not qualified for the Euro's will go into a play off to get a place at Euro 2020. This includes league D which includes teams like Gibraltar and Malta etc.

If this is the case, why would any of the teams in League D want to get promoted? It will be easier for them to qualify by staying in League D. It will turn into a competition whereby the teams try to lose on purpose.

Similarly, the weaker teams in each League will be better off by getting relegated to give them a better chance of qualifying for the Euro's, again meaning there will be a whole host of teams trying to lose.

It could very quickly turn into a complete farce of a competition.

But anyway, what do I know Smile

I didn't understand well the rules, so I can't judge. It looks cool like idea btw.
I hope that the long period you took to get to the Euro's will prevent those speculations (you have to combine matches even 8 years before, maybe you aren't play anymore as well)...let's see

The manipulation of the rankings system was by avoiding playing friendlies, and thus avoiding the impact of a losing game. This forces them into more competitive games, which would under the old system have given them more reward for winning, but also more chance of losing.

Regardless, they've changed the rankings system now. And they've completely messed it up, so teams won't be changing very much in the rankings anymore https://www.weglobalfootball.com/2018/...-rankings/

The only chance League D teams have of qualifying for the Euros is by winning their group, and promoting. The four promoting teams then have the playoff for that Euros spot. So no, they'll all be trying to win. And I think League D should be great - the minnows playing against each other, rather than getting thumped by everyone else.

Yeah, I forgot they get promoted, but even so a team could get relegated from league 3 on purpose to go into the League 4 playoff the next time around. They would then get promoted back up to league 3, but they have a much better chance of qualifying by doing that then by trying to win league 3 or qualifying through the actual qualification process.

The system is so easy to manipulate.

I guess we'll just have to see how it plays out. It a new competition so anything could happen. At least it removes countless pointless friendlies.

I don't like it whatsoever. International football is supposed to be the pinnacle and it is with the World Cup but if you consider the Euros as well this just adds more unnecessary international fixtures that clubs won't want their players playing in. I like how Continental Tournaments and the World Cup (and respective qualifying tournaments) are the main showcase for international teams and I see this league as trying to add something that shouldn't exist.

I personally want to see fit, uninjured players playing club football across Europe week in week out. The international break is pointless if it's not for the Euro or WC qualifiers. This just means more clubs will be fighting with international teams and players involved to avoid having their players come back injured or tired.

The idea of course is to avoid stupid international friendlies but this now provides more incentive to clubs to sign players from the Americas, Asia or Africa where the top players (Salah, Aubameyang, etc.) will be taking the week off (because many of them don't play in the international friendlies) and these players will come back from the international break feeling well rested and 100% ready for their next club match while their European team mates will be recovering from what will likely be hard fought internationals.

Quality of club football will decline. Players fitness levels will decline. Scrap it before it starts...

...at least from Africa you have to take in consideration they leave for a month every two years for Continental Tournament, that's much worse

AFCON has been moved to June next year, so that won't be a problem for big league teams anymore luckily Smile

Well played by England!
Pain is temporary. Quitting lasts forever.

Defeat tonight could see Germany practically relegated to League B.

The biggest highlight has been League D. Have Luxembourg ever won 3/4 matches in their history before? It will be great to see someone like them at the Euro's in 2020.

Well they did qualify through "normal" qualification so that's a little bit different. But they were great fun for everyone anyway, except maybe England. Pfft

Is there any good explanation for the new Euro qualifying format? I understand ten new groups of five and six nations will be formed in 2019, or am I wrong here? As far as I read on UEFA's website it looks like so, but I still don't know how those groups are formed and what is the impact of these matches on the outcome of said groups.

I need a UEFA Nations League for Dummies guide here.

So who's your favourites for the title now. More or less 25% chance each, maybe a little lower for Switzerland. But it really is anyones tournament at this stage.

Playing on home turf gives Portugal an extra boost of confidence - and Fernando Santos is a pragmatic strategist - so it gives us a slight advantage. However, can’t see a clear favourite. Perfect chance for both England and Netherlands return to form, especially with very interesting new players emerging.
