C1/C2 Race Selection Stats
SportingNonsense
How many teams entered into each C1 and C2 race? Well...

Averages

TotalPCTCTA
C1 (Mean)21.613.83.93.9
C1 (Median)2313.83.93.9
C2 (Mean)20.73.612.44.6
C2 (Median)203124

A mean average (rounded up) of 22 teams in C1 races and 21 in C2 races is good news for ensuring good quality AI. As we would expect, PCT teams dominate C1 fields, while C2 teams dominate C2 fields. It would have been 18 and 16 respectively, without the inclusion of Amateur teams.

Tour of America

Some changes this year with the addition of the HC points scales, removal of TTT and increase of mountain stages. The race will be much more rewarding for those that turn up, and are willing to commit the RD cost. What was the outcome?

14 teams will ride the race this year: 7 PCT and 7 CT. This was the least popular C1 race amongst PCT teams (Monterrey and Arenberg had 10; Pico Basile, Southland, Roma Maxima and Cyprus had 11). On the other hand, it was the 2nd most popular C1 race amongst CT teams. The British Isles was the other popular area for CT teams in C1, with 8 for Tour of Britain, 7 for Ras Tailteann and 6 for Celtic Chrono.

It's a decrease from last year, which had 16 teams - 8 from each division. A huge opportunity therefore awaits, for all those who do take part.

Most Popular

13 of the 52 races will have 24 teams, while another 10 have 23.

Gent - Wevelgem was the most popular race for PCT teams (19), followed by Etoile de Besseges (18), Le Samyn, Sochi Cup, Milano - Torino (all 17) and Tour of Japan (16).

For CT teams the busiest race will be Tour de San Luis (16), with Coppa Placci, Giro del Trentino, Circulo de Juarez and La Tropicale Amissa Bongo all with 15 CT teams. All 19 will of course feature in every C2HC race.

With the exception of Tour of America, it is universally the case that all C1 races have more PCT teams than C2 races; and all C2 races have more CT teams than C1 races.

Ronde van Het Ijsselmeer will see 8 Amateur teams, with 7 in Betonexpressz GP, Hanko Classic, Heistse Pijl, Nakhon Ratchasima Trophy and Roma Maxima.

Least Popular

As noted Tour of America will have 14, as will Chrono d'Arenberg. (Amateur teams were not able to join either). There'll be 16 teams at Monterrey TTT, with 17 for Vuelta al Tachira and the Tour of Bulgaria. Four races with 18, two with 19.

There will be CT teams in every race, but only one team in Macskako Kerekparverseny and Ronde van Het Ijsselmeer.

PCT teams in C2

New this year was the requirement for PCT teams to ride at least 6 C2 race days. And the mean average amount that each team will actually spend in C2 is 7.8.

The most popular races were Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne and Hong Kong Challenge with 8 teams. Conversely, no PCT teams opted for La Tropicale Amissa Bongo - which had been one of the most popular amongst CT teams. Also just the 1 PCT team for Tachira, Betonespressz and Hanko.

CT teams in HC

7 of the 20 HC races will feature the presence of CT teams. Ukraine, Cheshire, Danmark and Emelia the only to have two CT teams in them. The presence of CT teams boosts the mean average number of teams per HC race from 22.65 to 23.2.

I was considering Tour of America participation, but choose not to on competitive grounds and nothing else. But didn't expect just 14.

Interesting to look at as always. Not overly surprised by anything here, but kinda good to see fewer PCT teams at the Tour of Southland where my team will be riding. Also a lot of Amateur teams in the Nakhon Ratchasima Trophy so might give me a good chance.

Overall it shows the Amateur teams are, in my opinion, very important as having the average number of teams about 20odd ensures good racing and ensures it isn't too easy for teams to score points in races which are under-subscribed.

I'd love to have done Tour of America, but with Garby having shown how bad he is in TT's last year, and then an increase in TT km's, I just couldn't justify the race days. Hopefully next year!

Looks like our big gamble on ToA might pay off nicely. Otherwise stats about as expected, little surprised to see so much favoritism towards the cobbles overall.

Lots of interesting nuggets to try and digest here, so thanks SN for compiling/releasing this info again this season.

First up, the cross-division PCT <---> CT interactions look nice and healthy. The Amateur teams also look to have met a large part of their initial brief in ensuring we avoid majorily under-subscribed races being ruined by wonky AI by default (AI can still throw a wobbly sometimes all by itself though I am sure!). Also brings more PT managers eyes onto the lower division races as their development team may be participating.

Not overly surprised by the races most in/out of favour. Was fairly clear during transfers that more PCT teams were looking to bring in a cobbled rider or two, hence appropriate races well subscribed, as is difficult for these rider types to utilise their full RD allowance. Roma Maxima is the only lower subscribed PCT cobbled race, and much of this very likely related to the (evil!) De Panne race clash. Similarly not surprising that PCT teams eager for 1-day puncheur classics, as most teams in the division have a rider or two who could pull off a good result in these race-types if on a good day (at least in their own managers eyes). Also not overly surprising that some PCT managers are a little shy of the couple of innovative new races (i.e. Cyprus + Chrono Arenberg), where there is lots of uncertainty in this first season as to what a 'fitting' rider type actually is! That was my feeling at any rate, hence not attending Cyprus, but WCC are taking a chance on Chrono Arenberg. Confident after this first outing for both races there will be less perception of a gamble on attending in 2019 after an initial run.

What is slightly surprising to me is that there are not a few more PCT teams in ToA. Even with the upgrade to HC points scoring, majority obviously believe 21-days is still too much of a gamble for the potential reward. In most cases this is probably a sound decision made with the head rather than the heart (the heart won WCC over Wink ). Nonetheless, I had though maybe 10-12 PCT teams would have taken the plunge from the perspective of having a decent 2nd stage race leader option in their ranks, or alternatively 1 or 2 teams take a punt on dominating the sprinter/puncheur stages. Hopefully 14 teams is enough in combination with the new parcours and overall race length that we still get an exciting race with 'good' AI. Couple of CT attending teams almost bound to have a decent race by default now due to lack of PCT teams, but still not clear that even a solid overall+stages peformance delivers a good enough return on ppRD to make this a 'head' decision even for a CT outfit (assuming interested in promotion, if already planned for a consolidation season, then is of course maximum RP fun).

Pleasantly surprised with the lack of ToA teams, seems like we could've made a nice gamble there. Though I hope we don't repeat last year's syndrome of simply being too strong on paper to join breakaways.

Thanks for the stats!

Wonder how much Ockeloen can acchieve in the small Tour of America peloton as I make my debut in that race.

Probably praying for some breaks by him.

At least the team should have some impact in sprints.

Surprised with the small ToA startlist. One could have believed that it now starts to make sense for a couple of teams to go there instead of just being a bad decision for everyone but the top three and the top sprinter.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Thanks for summarizing.

Surprised by the low number of teams in ToA considering the increased points, had expected that to make more interesting for teams with 2nd rate stage race leaders or teams with too much depth in climbing/stage racing to give everyone a chance to lead.

Personally happy that Cyprus isn't too crowded as I have taken the gamble there withKönig seeing as he is one of the stage racers with best cobbles stat. Really looking forward to seeing how that pan out!

Interesting stats! I didn't know Amateur teams would be that important. It doesn't matter for me personaly, but maybe some people set a goal for a race they'd expect to be very empty?
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Then the quality of amateur teams rarely will change the outcome I`d say.
If they do, the goal was probably not a very good goal anyway.

Agreed, one should go for their own strenghts. Still, goals ruined by Amateur teams could be something to take into account when evaluating Amateur teams at the end of the season.

To be honest, if you get a goal ruined by a team made up of riders noone wanted you did something wrong...

Hear hear. The alternative would be getting a goal ruined by bad AI which IMO is much worse.

As I just had with my win goal in Qatar. Pfft

But then again this is part of the game and then other races hopefully see a overperformance.

As long as it doesn`t hit me all season now, I am quite fine with it tbh.

We only might come back to this topic, if I miss 200 points to the relegation line in the end. Pfft

Very pleased with the low amount of teams riding Tour of America. Looking even more forward to that race now! Smile
