The Classique Pico Basile is a new early season mountain test for the Pro Continental Riders and some CT riders trying to challenge as well.
3 early mountains already will make it difficult as the pace is high usually but the main difficulty is the Pico Basile, the 26km final climb with an average of 8,5%.
As always in the early season races, teams must found themselves and a lot of new riders. The PCT got a big addition in Pluchkin, though the Moldovan in fact is not at the start of a probably guaranteed win! And also of the other top climbers, surprisingly many did not make it to this early season classic. In names Uran, Velits, Monsalve, Eastman, Keizer, Shikai, Meintjes, Roglic. None of them is at the start. And hence chances grow for the remaining obviously as also for some top CT riders.
Let`s start with riders being here. Top favourite and on paper 2nd best PCT climber this year Denifl followed by Philips new star Henao Montoya, a former top3-5 PT climber!
Then we see the former Eritel climbers Kudus and Berhane, now riding for Repsol and WCC though.
And also interesting last years CT rivals Valls and Penasa both in Kulczyk colours now.
CT wise hopes are quite high on Kiserlovski, who is a top3 CT climber probably and also Anacona and König are here for an early test.
In total with some more riders the favourites look like this:
| Mo | Acc | | Mo | Acc | Denifl | 84 | 65 | Anacona | 79 | 61 | Henao Montoya | 82 | 73 | Brenes | 79 | 70 | Kudus | 81 | 70 | Valls | 79 | 72 | Berhane | 81 | 68 | Penasa | 79 | 76 | Kiserlovski | 80 | 66 | Pantano Gómez | 79 | 68 | Nazaret | 80 | 72 | König | 79 | 67 | Choi | 80 | 68 | Rodrigues | 78 | 72 | Ji | 80 | 65 | Ndayisenga | 78 | 73 | Carthy | 79 | 69 | Bennett | 78 | 73 |

First look at Henao and a chance to see what he can do in the absence of some big names. He has the strongest support we can offer in this race with Pantano (a top 15 contender himself), Mai, Ruijgh and Poels all here as our mountain train. Will be disappointing not to get a podium out of this at least.

Don't know how Nazaret missed a mention outside of the table at the end But this is definitely a fantastic opportunity to get our season back on track. Not the strongest of fields and so Nazaret has a great opportunity to get a Top 5 and we can hope for even better! He's got some decent support in Fernandez & VdB so hopefully they can deliver him to a great result.
Denifl has to be clear favourite because of that MO stat and his ACC shouldn't be too big of a problem of the long final climb but this is anyone's race really! Good luck to all and hopefully it's an exciting one on this long & tough course.

Basically I went with the top favourites as seen 81+.
Then mentioneing the Kulczyk riders for story reasons as they were rivals in last years CT and dominated the fields there, but now share the team one division higher.
Then last 3 as CT riders challenging the PCT teams.
So skipped the 80 or lower PCT riders in the text and just have them in the list.
Went pretty basic with the text as the table adds a lot more than could be said. |

Well, go Kudus, Berhane and Konig!
Some quite surprising absences, so a real opportunity for all of them.

Looking forward to see how this one plays out with the actual MG DB. It will obviously come down to the long summit finish up Pico Basile and there's definitely some riders, who should take this rare opportunity to deliver a podium result. Would love to see Bennett trying something and show that he belongs to a bigger team *cough* also cheering for another former rider Penasa and I'm kinda with Denifl as well. Good luck!

Obviously hoping for a win from Denifl, but imo the big favourite is Henao. Last season he beat Denifl almost anywhere. If Denifl ends up outside of the podium that would totally ruin our season start, after Guerao already failed a goal in DUC.
I see dominox has brought Jesus here, will be interesting to see what he can do in this field! |

We'll try! Hoping for a nice showing from Bennett - certainly, I'll be disappointed if he can't beat Velits' attempt in Canada! RES will be a disadvantage over that long ass climb, STA won't be bad for him though.
Henao for the win

Had a couple of days left when planning König so decided to go here.
Not the biggest of expectations, but it will be interesting to see how he rides in his new jersey

Wow! This is a really weak startlist
A podium is a must after Apex's failure, with hopefully having a fight with Denifl and Henao for the win. Ndayisenga could fight for a Top10 behind his leader, and maybe Novak and Serrano can fight for the last minor points

Except Tour of America he will ride almost everywhere he can
Finally the season starts for my team. I don't know what to expect from my team or other riders. I just hope any of my riders will deliver some points for my team.

Really looking forward to seeing the Valls/Penasa in full flow here, with their entire domestique stable in support.
Two in the top 10 would be somewhat expected, to be honest. Hopefully one of them can manage a top 5 as well.
Thanks for the love tsmoha , and yeah, same as Bikex, it seems like Henao's to lose, though Kudus will have something to say here.

A surprisingly weak startlist opens opportunities for many teams. Henao looks like the favourite hut also Denifl, Kudus, Nazaret or the Repsol duo are interesting candidates for this. I guess a couple of teams will regret no sending their guy here...

Would've expected a better field for only 2 RDs, but I guess the ones who did send leaders here rejoice. This should be a win for Henao, but I will ofc root for Denifl, even though I would expect him to fail once again

Will be strange seeing the Eritel duo trade punches up the Basile.
Not a lot of riders with strong Acc here, I think strong guys like Denifl and Henao will create a selection with a few weaker climbers who’ll outdo them both at the end.
Would love another terrific performance from Brenes after his Apex success, but no real expectations. Hope we can manage to make it into the break too!

Kulczyk duo I know it's weird not to see Valls in Repsol colors, but he's not here anymore
