Transfers Vol. 3: Final Touches

A dramatic last few days saw eleventh-hour overbids in and out, a deadline day SOS loan-out, and four more riders join the team: two valuable lieutenants and two young climbers as stagiaires.

The last-minute fax machine (not really but Hi bitter Repsol manager!) transfer sheet mistake meant we had to send out an SOS to all teams in pro cycling, and eventually Azteca came to our rescue and took in Geremie Nzeke on loan. A very valuable rider to use, the situation wasn't ideal but it was our only shot and we are very grateful to Azteca and to Geremie for agreeing to the deal. We wish him luck there and can't wait to have him back.

The final team presentation will be coming soon now the squad is finalised and the madness is over for another year!

A very good climber, similar to his leader Velits in that he has a great diesel engine and is best in the high mountains. However, he also has the punch and nous to go for himself if needed. The Iranian is technically and tactically very good and brings PCT experience from Compal and Meiji - no offense to our friends at Compal but we'd rather a season like the latter. We look forward to Abofazl riding for us next year, and will be the key domestique for both Bennett and Velits.

Our first South African (not for lack of trying this time #RenewOctagon) and a very valuable. A diesel puncheur who can do longer mountains and even flat efforts, his skillset and bucketloads of experience will be very valuable as a climbing and hills domestique (and maybe C2 leader...). He has a lot of loyalty and likes to attack on occasion which could see some interesting tactics in play if he and Roux so feel.

The talented Kenyan mountain biker has attempted to make the code switch once before and rode for his home team Kenya Airways as a stagiare two years ago - he even became the national champion! However after the team disbanded unfortunately nobody wanted to give him a contract. But we have handed the still just 22-year-old climber a stagiaire deal, and we hope to take him on full time and help him realise his KoM ass-kicking potential.

The talented young Colombian climber is a tough bugger to say the least. A man with great mental strength for such a young age and with the mindset which lends itself to endurance, be it long stages, efforts, or stage races. He excels in diesel climbing which isn't 100% the Xero style but makes him a great solo breakaway artist or domestique. Hopefully, we can fit him into our long-term plans and develop his lovely skillset ourselves.

I think you built a really nice squad, and I love the Venter signing. A really nice rider that just lacks a bit of acc to be really awesome

Thanks Heine! Yeah Venter is a super cool domestique, and indeed if he had some acc then he'd be absolutely amazing!

Official 2018 Team Presentation

It's been a third absolutely insane transfers at Xero, with plans flying out the window, more bidding wars than most other teams and eventually, a crisis planning meeting was called. This resulted in some outer targets or even people we hadn't considered joining (or almost joining) the squad. In fact, the only remnants of our top original plans for additions are Areruya and Debesay which isn't that bad. When we thought we were done, disaster struck. We'd forgotten about a rider in our finance sheet! An SOS was sent out (three of them) to other teams, which resulted in a last-gasp loan-out of a valuable rider.

We have compiled a squad which is 60% from our focus nations, which is slightly below what we were going for (though we did originally have an over 80% squad in our original dealings, which shows good intentions), but our total riders belonging to us is 64% from our focus ares. Our goal for this season was surviving with 65% focus riders... so 5% off. Not bad - though we do have to survive!

Booker wrote:
Hope you manage to pull off that 65% focus next year, although I'd be very impressed if you successfully accomplished that and the survival goal Wink

Would our rival manager from Kulczyk be impressed with 60%?

Manager's Thoughts
The one terrain where our improvement is next to non-existent, but seeing how we tore up the CT and wanted to invest in other areas, I don't care! Roux should be an outside scorer for some races, especially if we can get creative with our tactics. Venter is a top-notch lieutenant, and I know Anthony wouldn't have anyone else by his side but Marv and Tom. The loss of Diggs was a necessary evil, and the season-long loan-out of Geremie was also one, although it shouldn't have happened. Both of their losses will be felt in the squad as a whole, but especially here. Hopefully, given we won't have the favourites tag anymore, we can function like this.

Definitely the terrain where we have improved the most - and the one we didn't plan on improving much at all! Luke when he's around and Tosh are top notch tough sprinters - not your typical fastmen but guys who can hang around on tougher terrain and have the skill and power to get through long days, wind and short hills ok. They don't have much of a leadout but I feel like one isn't necessary - it would have been nice but they are strong enough to find their way with guidance. We are planning on splitting them to maximise success and hope when they ride certain classics together they can work well and get some top results. Having nice domestiques as well as an attacking option in Jams will certainly make life easier.

Not quite the masterpiece we envisioned, but I am still a fan of our cobbles unit. Luke is a top notch guy for the less brutal races he can manage to attend (especially the Baltic, De Panne and Cheshire tours with sprint days) and Debesay is a fascinating rider who works well in the Flanders-type classics and is one tough bugger. Hamish and Jams are improving all the time and Carl is a very nice leadout rider for any semi-classics Luke might go to. Except there are none. Dammit.

Not as strong depth as we'd like, since George and Peter will largely be seperated, but Peter is a fantastically strong climber whose TT does him credit too and a top notch leader in this division. He has some loyal domestiques who are very capable as well as Gilanipoor who should stick with him well into the pointy end of races. Certainly hoping for the squad to protect Peter well enough that he can finish it off with some high GC placings and rake in the points to help keep us up.

Very impressed Pfft

Overall, despite the difficulties in the transfer market, Xero looks like a formidable team, with some real scoring ability on a few terrains. In addition to Velits/Tosh/Rowe with guaranteed results, you've got some scorers. Think that Roux is likely to hand in another decent year, while Areruya is still developing and the rest of the peloton can still relax. He's going to be a monster in a few! And Jams will do Jams this year.

AbhishekLFC
You keep saying good things about our team, but I can't help but be impressed by yours! With options in all terrains, you should be looking at a good season now. It helps to have versatile riders beyond the leaders and you have plenty of those. Looking forward to following your progress Smile

jandal7
@roturn - Well, we can't give everything away just yet, can we? Wink

@Booker - Your validation matters a lot, so thanks! The top three raking in key points, Roux turning up and then some and Jams back to his old self with no FL breakaway alogirithm nonsense would be awesome! And yeah, we're just biding our time until Areruya can wreak terror on the peloton Grin Thanks Smile

@AbhishekLFC - Don't think my team will come close to yours, but thanks a lot - awesome to be taking on the PCT together whichever order we come in! Indeed even when my first plan was quite specialised being able to score in nearly every race was important to me, and if it goes to plan my rider schedules on paper say we can do just that! I'm a big fan of a versatile rider, what's a domestique who can't offer more than one thing? And when it's a leader like Debesay... I love it even more Grin

Areruya is such a cool rider. His skill set looks quite familiar to me and i would have loved to add him to my squad if it would have been realistic Wink

@knockout - Too many talents from my focus regions are being turned into faceless drones for slightly superior leaders. Glad you didn't make it happen and let me start my crusade against this!

We've had our schedule confirmed for the season with our (PT)HC band applications confirmed, received our invitations to C1/C2 events, and even confirmed four PT wildcard events! The latter was especially pleasing, and will see all four of our terrains represented, from the cobbles of the Midlands in England to the high mountains of Lichtenstein.

We are lucky enough to have 5 national champions on the team (plus the two out on loan) and once again they will ride in some truly stunning unique jerseys created by our talented designer the_hoyle. They reflect our team design and the flags of their countries. At the bottom is our young Samoan Daniel Afoa's lovely jersey designed by hillis91, which he will wear this season at his loan destination of Equinor Pro Cycling.

@Heine - Thanks! the_hoyle did a great job as always, and I hope CNC can show it off with some breaks and we see it protecting Rowe and Debesay throughout the year!

Leader Schedules Vol. 1: Velits, VDS, Debesay

Finally now we can reveal who will be leading us in which races - and the full schedules of our seven leaders throughout the year. From all-in for Velits races to a triple threat in Cyprus, we've pored over the calendar and came up with schedules we hope will keep us safe.

Peter Velits

The most straightforward rider to plan on this list - only missing one non-clashing mountain event all season after we made a slight miscalculation and gave him 44/46RDs when picking C1 events - meaning we made a switcheroo and sent him to the Middle East instead of a mountain classic.

The big targets here of course are Catalunya, Colombia, Vancouver, Corsica and Österreich - stage races at a PCT level. He'll be joined by the best stage race squad (except if Bennett isn't going) we can field at all of them.

He and a soigneur also made a bet on if he could finish a PT cobbled classic. So we decided to test that out.

Vuelta a ColombiaHC
Tour of VancouverHC
GP LichtensteinPT
Corsica InternationalC1

Tosh Van der Sande

With Tosh we targeted teaming up with Rowe in flat classics and chasing stage wins in stage races. We tried to find the most suitable stage races to him and hope he can grab some victories as he did in 2016. His big goal is to get another crack and repeating his surprise victory in the Berlin ProRace from his Strava days.

Mekseb Debesay

Our cobbled leader and helpful all-arounder Debesay will try to balance riding development races with his cobbled leading duties and some domestique/free role races to boot. Hopefully he can both reach his full potential before next season and also make quite a few points in the process. He'll ride as full a cobbled calendar as possible, whilst also finding time to be a free role, TTT workhorse, punchy and sprint domestique and even attend mountain classics. What can't he do?

Velits clashing with Kudus way too much RDs for my liking (~30) Pfft

Hopefully Kudus can use his better hilly abilities and his backups to overcome the deficit in pure mountain strenght in those HC races Wink

And in 27 RDs with Henao Pfft

Marcovdw
Úran and Velits will clash in 37 RD. The Colombian only has 37 RD in total so he is looking forward to dropping Velits in every race he rides! Pfft

(Úran only skips Maroc and the PT races)

Lots of clashes there Shock Will be interesting to see the PCT climbers battle. And without really knowing the calender, there has to be some riders really lucking out here
