Festina-Canal+ Continental HQ

Back in 2016 Canal+ decided to pull out as a main sponsor for the Festina professional setup. In the meanwhile, the two sponsors have decided to throw a bit of money into the development of riders within the Continental rankings, as a pure amateur team.

Within the amateur setup, riders are paid a fee resembling the money needed to travel, aswell as covering bikes/bikefits, clothings and food. The team will work within the Continental Division as a team taking part of 34 C1 racedays and another 22 in the C2 calender. As such the team isn't looking to be competitive, but have the aim to sign riders suited to show themselves well in the chosen races, so they can aquire a professionel contract for the 2019 season.

While doing so we are also looking to develop 3-5 young talents, who are yet to fulfill their true potential. In order to do so atleast one rider with previous Pro Tour experience will be needed.

Presenting Rasmus Mygind

We are very happy to introduce our first signing of the season. Even more so, because he was one of our top priority riders.

Rasmus Mygind 4.100 29yo €10.000
Fl Mo Hi TT St Rs Rc Co Sp Ac Fi DH Pr
73667372727068606672667076

Rasmus is a very much overlooked rider, we think. Due to his quiet nature, Rasmus doesn't make a big notice around himself, but his qualities on a bike certainly speaks for itself.

At Continental level, Rasmus have every chance to fight for GC results due to his strong prologue, decent TT aswell as punchy ability. If Rasmus get's himself into a good position, he will be extremely difficult to shake up, and thus we are extremely pleased to sign him as our first rider of the season.

Our 2018 calender fits Rasmus' qualities extremely well, and we do believe we will see him fight for decent GC results aswell as stage results.

Presenting Julien Simon

Another signing have been made, and this time we managed to pick up a rider that fits our priorities in so many ways.

Julien Simon 4.100 33yo €5.000

Julien is a rider we have been looking up to for several seasons at professionel level. For some reason he wasn't capable of aquiring a contract despite him clearly being good enough to compete at Continental level. Therefor we are very happy to see him sign on an amateur contract with us.

Julien Simon will lead the way in the hills when going gets too tough for Rasmus Mygind, and might also contribute in the sprints - especially where the terrain makes for tough going.

With his immense experience from the professional cycling scene he also works as a mentor for the younger riders who are yet to find themselves within the professionel cycling scene.

Presenting Andreas Miltiadis

While the former announced riders all had the potential of performing at Continental level, Andreas Miltiadis will ride on his first ever team at higher level.

Andreas Miltiadis 4.100 22yo €5.000
Fl Mo Hi TT St Rs Rc Co Sp Ac Fi DH Pr
67686866686761686169616766

The young cypriot is by many touted to be the next big thing from those regions, and while he is yet to fully discover his potential, he surely is a rider with multiple decisions to make while growing up in the world of cycling.

Andreas is a strong climber, both the steep, short climbs and the longer endurant climbs, but he also goes well over cobbles and rides a decent timetrial. His main task for the season will be to help the leaders and look to discover where he sees himself in the future. We have created 2 likely paths for him to follow.

Andreas Miltiadis will become a rider that at Pro Continental Level would get to ride his own chances now and again, and could become lieutenaint, while he might struggle to do so at Pro Tour level. He certainly has the potential to become a good domestique at Pro Tour level though.

Which path Andreas choses will be interesting, but one thing is certain. Cyprus have a new all-time best in the future in this young lad.

Miltiadis was on my shortlist aswell, but I expected some other team would pick him up so looked for others to develop Smile

Presenting Ioannidis Kiriakidis

Another talented rider from the greek area was signed for development. This time a different type of rider, but also a talented young guy.

Ioannidis Kiriakidis 4.100 21yo €5.000
Fl Mo Hi TT St Rs Rc Co Sp Ac Fi DH Pr
67656769676867626370697369

Ioannidis is a rider who goes well against the clock, but can't be ruled out of other areas either. Unlike Miltiadis his career path is pretty much sealed, however, and he will become a timetriallist. The only question is whether or not he will be able to climb well or being a roulleur in the future.

Our guess is that he will be a climbing domestique, which will land him somewhere around here.

Fl Mo Hi TT St Rs Rc Co Sp Ac Fi DH Pr
68727276727374626371707376

The greek talentpool is rather large in these years, but even then Kiriakidis is easily among the top talents. His set of qualities makes for a perfect GC domestique rider with his ability to perform in a Team TimeTrial, aswell as climbing rather well... At lower level he might even be able to contes for GC results himself with also a good downhill ability, which could help save a lot of energy.

He is basically here to learn, and a few races should suit him alright to do so.

Thanks Smile

I could have picked up better, but he and Kiriakidis both fit perfectly I think. Having two level 1 riders might hurt us a bit though if we put them into the breaks instead of our leaders, but to develop Greek/Cypriot riders is fun, even if they'll never become good enough to lead at higher level.

Good to see someone picking up Julien Simon. He didn't do much last year as he was blocked by Monfort, but I feel like his career is far from over. Will follow him for sure Wink

Thanks a lot. Hope I'll be able to do a little bit of extra for each race, seeing as it's new and not too much Smile

Indeed both talents should be pretty cool riders. They were both on my preliminary shortlist for the PT team, but were slightly too weak to gamble on them.

Yeah he's stats should be OK to atleast compete here and there. Had he been a bit stronger in the mountains he would have been perfect for this little project. But now I have 2 decent looking puncheurs who work well for long range attacks too. Unfortunately both are not strong enough to work in races where there's mountains too... Might have to look into signig a rider that can do that Smile

Presenting Ismaël Kip

The biggest leader of the team has been signed. Also after landing our race schedule it was easy to see that he would be our main target.

Ismaël Kip 4.100 31yo €135.000
Fl Mo Hi TT St Rs Rc Co Sp Ac Fi DH Pr
69545665676373648082606175

It is obvious to look at the sprint ability and believe we picked up Kip because he was the best of the available sprinters. That isn't quite true, however. Kip has been aquired for his combination of sprint and prologue capabilities, where we believe he is rather unique.

We are quite aware of Ismaël's weaknesses, which are easier to spot than his strengths, but at this level and the races ridden we believe he could become a very valuable asset. We have planned the season to see us have 7 prologues and 21 flat stages out of 56 possible, so we believe he will be our most important rider.

Presenting Ruslan Tleubayev

Another strong rider with very obvious strengths was signed after landing our big star.

Ruslan Tleubayev 4.100 31yo €135.000
Fl Mo Hi TT St Rs Rc Co Sp Ac Fi DH Pr
72566663707073637777626174

Ruslan is a very similar sprinter to Ismaël Kip. He's a stronger roulleur and survives hills much better, while also being a more classical endurant rider by all means. He offers a strong prologue too, and while he is probably a better rider allround than Kip, he has the clear disadvantage of a lower top speed, which might see him struggle to actively take part in the sprints.

Because of that we have signed Ruslan as our leadout-sprinter. And if the races are too tough, we can hope that he will not drop back to wait for Kip. We recognize this fact as being somewhat of a risk, but we were prepared to take it.

He will have the same key races as Kip.

Awesome to see Mygind get a ride! I had him in 2016 and he's a very solid rider. Nothing special, but he contributes all around. Perfect guy to help lead a team like this!

Also, insane to me that Simon still hadn't gotten a ride before this! I remember him being a big leader in CT a few year back. Very good hill/sprint combo.

Yes I think Mygind could score decent, unless he have to wait for Kip Pfft

Julien Simon should be good yes. I don't have a lot of difficult hilly stages, so he might not be the obvious pick, but I hope he will fight for decent results here and there.

You did a great job assembling a team, but are Amateur teams supposed to be this competitive?

Thanks.

I'm not so sure it will be that competitive Smile

My best sprinter is the 11th strongest if measured by sprint stat. If measured by all relevant aspects he will probably be somewhere between 30-50. I can however hope that I have him in decent looking races.

Also, my big hope, Rasmus Mygind, has 76PRL and 73HI. 30 riders can match or outperform him in the prologues - and then some random factors too...

I would be very surprised if my team ended up scoring above 100 points in total.
