It's accumulative, they never did it when he was isolated. They played themselves, and played into his odds. Isolated on todays stage Dumoulin is the obvious loser if Roglic got to long, but I think you're all overestimating Thomas a bit. Had he been so good he would have closed on Quintana, and he would have went with Roglic to secure his place in stone. He didn't manage to, he just managed to return on their attacks.
By this I am not saying he hasn't been the best this Tour, I am just saying there has been ways to beat him, if they ganged up on him, instead of ganging up with him. |

Imo thomas was in total control, he didn't need to close on Quintana, he was just looking at Tom and Roglic.
About them I really can't see how they could drop G. Todey he made the strategy to follow just Tom attacks and managed to do it

Probably need a thread one of these days on who did it better in recent years: Contador (1-5), Dumoulin (2-2(?)), Froome (1-4(?)).
Froome did the Tour - Vuelta double immediately before. The Giro win gave him all 3 GTs at the same time. His achievement is the greatest of those 3.

Well done in not answering the question. It's explicit about Giro-Tour double that none of them achieved, and the question is, who held up his own better. We might as well include Quintana too, for the lolz.
Otherwise we would have to compare him with Merckx and whoever else held all three GTs at the same time.

Any other rules you want to point out before anyone else bothers to respond. The two GTs won before the Giro this year is a perfectly valid point and increases the value of Froomes achievement. Even on its own Froome is the greatest of the 3 acheivements as Dumoulin didn't win so isn't even a real option and Contador didn't do as well at the Tour. Froome also had to deal with the French fans up and down every mountain which added to the stress of his tour ride.

Also, Contador finished 5th almost 10 mins down. Froome is 2-3 mins down.

Dumoulin wins it for me, lost the Giro through the most doped ride since Landis and lost the Tour to a somewhat suspicious but especially fresh rider.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Anyone else think Roglic will overtake Dumoulin today? I think Tommy D might find himself in 3rd. Roglic seems to be the strongest in the 3rd week.

A failed double attempt is either way failed, regardless if you win Giro, Tour or neither of them.
Seeing how Dumoulin was actually close to the Giro win bar the Finestre Freakshow and given how he lost most time to Thomas due the latter's 500m punch and Dumoulin's jokingly 20s penalty, I rank Major Tom above the other two. Sure he hasn't won either and it may be that he loses 2nd place to Rogla still, but overall, Dumoulin looked best to win both races and had luck been a bit more on his side, who knows.
As for Contador, he won Giro in a nice fashion against a very strong astana team that was so dominating at times. Next to that, Contador crashed both in Giro and later in Tour, where he was mostly riding against some competition in absolute peak shape (Quintana in 2015 was arguably his best verison). Having lost the 4th place to Nibali bc of effectively another crahs is too bad then, but the overall problem probably was his lack in recovery and recuperation. He oftentimes said he was too tired. With an additional week of recovery like the other two, who knows, and if Astana would have been less berserk, who knows.. That said, I don't think he was challenging much for the win in the later part of the race. He came off his Vuelta 2014 win against Froome which gave some hope that he'd be able to but the race was mostly Sky vs Movistar, as I remember.
I must admit that I hadn't thought of contador's Giro-Tour 2011 attempt. He was looking good in the race but too bad about the early crash where he lost time and was injured throughout the race. Still, that Alp d'Huez stage is one of my favs of all time.

Hepburn finally after all these years showing himself as the future top time triallist he was promised to be
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Meh, all the top riders still have to go. Hepburn might still end as 17th or something. |
