Stage 16: Carcassonne - Bagnères-de-Luchon
The first of three Pyrenees stages starts out remarkably flat, especially compared to what we've seen in the Alps. Three climbs in the second half make it challenging, but while especially the first two have some very steep sections, all three are relatively short. The descents are very quick with some hairpin bends which will provide a challenge for many riders.

This could well be the third breakawy win in a row, in which case it's tough to name clear favorites. One stands out though: stage 10 winner Julien Alaphilippe. It seems likely for him to try to get into the break, the climbs may be just short enough for him to survive at the front, and if he does, he has the pace to finish it. Other names might include Adam Yates and Bauke Mollema, who have been distanced in the GC, or Warren Barguil in an attempt to get a few points for the polkadots.
The stronger descenders amongst the GC contenders could try to exploit the tricky downhill stretch towards the finish to gain a few seconds, and if the peloton decides against saving energy for the much tougher stage tomorrow, this may lead to a stage win as well.

The race has just started again after protesting farmers sprayed fertilizer over the peloton. Many riders had to wash their eyes out, pretty crazy. Previously, many riders tried to escape, Alaphilippe, Barguil and Majka among them.

By my maths, Peter Sagan now has an unassailable lead in the points classification. All he has to do is stay on his bike until Paris and a sixth green jersey is his.

The summit of the Portillon lies 10 kilometres before the finish. Fast descenders can take advantage as it’s almost all downhill after the top. Three hairpins in short succession with 5 kilometres out could be tricky – and on it goes on flying descent
